Today we take a look a some genuine fossilized tree sap - otherwise known as amber! Amber plays a key role in Jurassic Park as the mosquito encasing resin that preserves the Dinosaur DNA.

I was out with my kids in a nature trail here in NJ that's maintained by the county. We were trying to catch some frogs, maybe a snapping turtle and we saw a small snake one time. Anyway as my older son was trying to cut off a long stick/staff that was dead wood with a machete, I looked down and I found a large chunk of what I thought was broken glass at the time. There was a large chunk and a smaller chunk next to it that looks like it broke off from the larger chunk at some point, maybe someone stepped on it or might have been the county maintenance vehicles that drive on the path, maybe the weight of the vehicle snapped off the smaller piece. Its an interesting piece because you can see some kind of fossilized leaf/leaf pattern in the amber. Going back again to look for more.

@@poisonivysforest Wouldn't _YOU_ like ta know!? 😆😉 Middlesex Greenway. Almost at the end where the playground is in Woodbridge. You'll see where we cleared out a bunch of overgrowth on the north side of the trail so we can get the frogs. I found the amber on the south side. It used to be a freight railway back in probably the 1920s or something. A lot of those tracks became abandoned I guess with the advent of the highway system and tractor trailers. The county laid down asphalt and gravel on the sides and called it a trail or "Greenway" I guess. All those trees and land that run along side are probably undisturbed all these years.

Lovely amber! I'm working with it as I type. Just felt the need to say that what you show is not fossilized tree sap (tree sap is 95% + water and not readily or ever fossilizable - new word!). You have fossil amber which is resin based. All the same, it is equally beautiful. :-)

Hi, great stuff! But sorry to correct u. I learned recently myself that Amber is NOT fossilized tree sap. Its fossilized tree RESIN. There seems to be a difference. I also was calling it sap, till I learned more when I googled it.

I saw on the History channel that it is called 'Petrified Pine Tree Sap'. They were showing a beautiful castle in Russia and the walls were SO BEAUTIFUL, with the decor of gold and the petrified pine tree sap, WOW, it takes your breath away. They said it was the 8th wonder of the world. ( but I got lost at what all else they were talking about b/c they said it got stolen, which doesn't make sense, how do you steal the walls out of a castle.)

Amber is appearently not tree sap. It's tree resin. And then had to look up the difference between tree resin and tree sap. And there's a difference. So it's fossilized tree "resin"

You know, I’m not sure if it was amber or some other sort of crystal but I had something similar in color that was about the size of a baseball back when I was in grade school, I dont remember exactly where it came from but I know I gave it to one of my teachers. But there was a couple of clear spots in the rock and inside of it you could see what looked to be some sort of claw the resembled a bear claw, i wish i never had given it up but it’s gone now.

That's ok but my piece of fossilized amber is like non ever discovered before. It's got 10 different inclusions 8 of which have never ever been seen in any amber from a long neck turtle to this crazy looking creature I've used as my profile image which can only be seen under uv light that's why it's blue look at him his tongue is sticking out, as for part of the tree my chunk of amber is still attached to a foot and a half of the original wood from the original tree. As a very thin coat of sap managed to cover the whole part that is wood

Is Amber from fossilized trees only? Are there also new Amber resins? Are there different types of Amber resins or does this come from very specific trees around the Jurassic era? I am just getting into researching this now. I love the smell of Amber.

The amber itself is sap from a tree. The sap has underwent petrifaction through millions of years of heat and pressure. I would assume this is why it is rare to find; it would have to undergo the circumstances of fossilization while still remaining intact and identifiable as tree sap.

The smell you like is from fresh...Copal...young Amber that is still like tree sap.. Columbia has huge deposits and it's not Amber..yet. It's still tree sap in the process of ageing. It can be heated and things added...You know what I mean...Amber can be heated and bonded but it is much harder to do.

Sap is about the same things and amber does occur still by amber trees which release a type of resin like sap substance usually theres nothing in them but time and time again animals or bugs get trapped and die but get fossilized

@@jonathanbishop2129 well Mr. Wizard, the bugs and things trapped in the resin don't fossilize the resin does, there is no air and no moisture, therefore it doesn't decompose, still looks exactly like it did the day it got covered. And only coniferous trees produce resin or pitch it's darker and stickier than sap, deciduous trees produce sap. Really light amber is made from sap darker amber is made from resin or pitch, two different things made from two different trees

How much did those pieces cost you? Is it ok to hold them in your hands though? I just assume that the oils in the hands would ruin or contaminate such an artifact.

They were actually sent to me as samples as a gift for review if I remember rightly! If I'm mistaken and I did buy them they weren't very expensive.. These are fairly robust pieces as they have been fossilized over millions of years in to a very hard substance - just like rock. They should last millions of years to come even with my touching them. JurassicCollectables. Ever since I was a little kid I thought that because I went on a tour to an underground cave and people wanted to touch all the mineral made crystal looking decorations that they saw inside the cave. It was so sparkly and had some beautiful cream, beige, and pinkish colors. There was an imprint of a person's hand on the wall where someone touched it and the oils from their hand left a lasting imprint that stays there even though the water trickles down it. So, when they showed us that imprint it made people understand why. Ever since that I've thought this way about old rocks. So, yeah, it was at one time sappy amber, but I guess now it's just some old rock.
