From what I recall reading many years ago one of the things they would do is put an oil lamp inside the igloo this would cause the snow to begin to melt. After it had melted a bit then they would allow cold air to enter into the igloo and it would turn that water into ice and strengthen the igloo.

I need to try this out. Thanks for the input! Have been pouring water on the outside which made it stronger as well.

I'm sure snow works better than ice. But, I have seen igloos made from ice blocks as well. While I'm sure they're better than nothing, do ice igloos retain your body heat the way snow igloos do? Or are they just cold protection from the elements? I'm a Florida native. I got to play in the snow once when I was 7 during a family trip up North for Christmas. But, I never got to build and igloo or even a snowman.

That's a good question... I can't say for sure but from my understanding I would say that ice igloos do not insulate as good as the once built from snow. Snow holds a lot of air, which makes it insulate pretty good. We used to cover our ice-fishing holes with a small pile of snow to keep it from freezing until next time. Even around -25 C the hole stayed open for at least 3 days. We once even covered a whole snowscooter under a BIG pile of snow (to keep it from freezing to the river-ice). That was when we had a good amount of water on top of the ice and which was covered by another layer of 10 inches of snow. That's the worst and once stuck you can't really do much about it. We could not get that thing off the ice so we had to wait until the next day so the track behind the snowscooter was frozen solid... If we had not covered it in snow, it would have been stuck there until spring and...

Used this as a reference for my first try. Busted my butt for 2 days and I still need one more but I'm excited it's going great. My outlets 10 feet from the opening I can run electronics out to it!

Great that you could use my video as a reference! Where are you from and what are the weather conditions you're dealing with?

@lapland_with_Chris Bloomington IN. Got about 24 straight hours of great packing snow. Staying around 20 degrees all week and we're getting dumped on again on Friday with 6 more inches of fluffy good stuff. All that nasty pink stuff on the radar is just missing us to the south. It's heaven here

Real Igloo... Are you sure about this? Well, it definitely looks like one. But with the wrong shape entrance, it's a fake igloo that doesn't work. If it can't keep warm inside, then it's not an igloo, just a copy.
