I am glad he specified ice igloo because regular igloos are actually made of very densely packed snow cause the air in the snow traps more heat.
@lauracortes772028 күн бұрын
how do they get the snow packed tight enough that it’s stable ?
@releasehalflife324 күн бұрын
@@lauracortes7720 snow is ice but little flakes of it thats why they call it snow flakes, when theyre packed together it becomes solid and is strong enough for an igloo but its concidered weak since you can stab a knife through it like butter and make it crumble really easily, if not tamped with its stable a good example is when ur walking on snow and it goes down the air pockets in between the snow flakes are being pushed out and the snow flakes are being pushed closer (that makes the nice snow sound)
@terrywebster977216 күн бұрын
@@lauracortes7720 The Inuit have many different names for different kinds of snow. The builders will stab a rod into the snow looking for a particular kind of hardness that results from some of the snow turning to ice. It is a certain firmness to the snow that they are looking for - not too soft, not too hard. With that they are assured of a solid igloo. If it will be used long term, then the floor is dug down below the sleeping and eating area, because the cold air will fill that lower section first, and leave the upper area warmer, up to 60 degrees or so.
