This is a good tutorial video for beginners. I have a few issues with it, however. If someone has you in a rear naked choke, there is no conceivable way you're going to break the hold that easy. Not to mention, not many people go for a rear naked without putting their hooks in or dragging their opponent to the ground. My other main issue with this video is the trapping for the strike. It's assuming that the attacker would just let you pull him down. In a real fight, step by step goes out the window.
@ecnivmarng71632 жыл бұрын
In a real fight, the fight depends on the daily step-by- step practice of basic movements. Even a boxer depends on the daiy step by step practice.

+Arley Brooks The funny thing about this video is that id so love to see him do it full speed. As im pretty sure that when he kicks out the knee when someone is balancing forward he will drop towards him which makes it completely impossible to step behind him as he suggests to do after. Its ironic how someone that claims to be a Tai Chi master has no idea how the concept of balance and movement works. Seen before in his vids that his footwork is quite poor.
@thelastdon2138 жыл бұрын
+Reddust86 When someone has a rear naked choke in good he can choke you out in 5 seconds, if he knows some BJJ he will let himself drop on his back and hook his legs around him. Cant step on someones toes when they are wrapped around your waiste!

In a deep stance like that so close to your attacker, your lead leg is very vulnerable to a thigh kick or a front leg take down. Both are common practice so you are quite vulnerable defending like that. A more fluid stance will be more useful. Hope that helps.
@Fercurix8 жыл бұрын
When you are in Rear Naked choke, don't turn your chin to the gap, you turn to the far side 1st. Facing the the gap is where the choke becomes most effective because it can clamp both sides of bloodflow more effectively then. My Sifu taught it like you did here and I found by going deeper into martial arts that this is mostly taught wrong. Instead move to the wrist, clamp the arm down, THEN you move to the gap.

for full nelson defense, hands on the forehead to prevent the neck crank is used in lots of arts. Another thing to keep in mind is you can defend early when they're trying to reach under your arms by trapping them in your arms.

hi mr.mace...I m from India....watching your videos daily. ...am a great fan of yours......your techniques are really effective. .... I am practising it at my home. ....
@kevinb71379 жыл бұрын
When all your techniques require a completely immobile, lethargic, non-threatening opponent, you aren't learning a martial art. You're learning poses. An opponent who is choking you is going to apply pressure and try to keep you in position. They will not stand with weak knees and idly wait for you to take them down, they're going to try to win. An opponent who is punching you isn't going to sit well out of range and telegraph, they're going to try to hit you. They're going to move unpredictably. They're going to move at full speed, and struggle against you if by chance you get a grip on the wrist. They certainly won't sit there, arm fully extended, and wait to be thrown. You are a disgrace to martial artists, and you are going to get people hurt thinking they are safe knowing how to defeat glorified practice dummies as opposed to resisting, aggressive opponents.
@2012tkdstudent9 жыл бұрын
You are correct. People will try to hurt you, however learning these techniques in a controlled and safe environment is required to make these techniques instinctive. Most street fighter are not trained, so they will telegraph their attack. The most common "tell" of an attack coming is a step followed by a throw of a punch (or haymaker). His opponent in this video is not resisting because the teacher is teaching the technique. I do not know these two, but at my school we start with little to no resisting. Then as the student begins to learn the technique, more and more resistance is added. The student is coached through the entire process. One last thing, I am an instructor, and from an instructor point of view this is how you want to teach beginners. If you throw student into the fire and attack them like they were on the street, they will not sign up. That means no money and no job.You can be the best marital artist in the world, but if you are a jerk to your students or your training is too rough they will not join. New students won't join because, they feel like they are not capable of learning kung fu/martial arts
@kevinb71379 жыл бұрын
Even in a safe environment, if you don't at least do light sparring and show legitimate applications of your techniques, then you aren't doing anything but teaching half motivated poses. You don't know what any street fighter is trained in. Believe it or not, people do more than throw heavily telegraphed stepping haymakers. Especially not the sorts who attack people at random. Street fight videos are not only available, they're popular. See the variety yourself. A gradual teaching method is well and good, but realism and actually performing techniques at decent speed to demonstrate their proper execution is far more important if you want to show people how to defend themselves. There are plenty of teaching methods between beating a student upon their entry into the class and this act. If you're an instructor, perhaps you should consider the importance of teaching methods that actually prime people for full speed combat.
@2012tkdstudent9 жыл бұрын
Kevin Brown trained fighters are les likely to fight on the street, because we fight on a daily bases. I don't know about other schools, but we teach taekwondo kickboxing mixed with muay thai and krav. We use kicks, punches, kness, elbows, and throws. We spar on a daily bases with padding. Sure there are some students who wants to spar without it, but we don't allow it. This is because of insurance. I have personally grew up fighting on the streets, so I know how rough it can be. I gave out beatings and I had my share of beatings. Not every student comes through the door looking to become a top fighter. Some come through to look or a new hobby, make new friends, or just for the workout. Whatever a student is looking for in martial arts that is what he or she will get out of their martial arts. Personally I was looking for new ways to whoop somebody. And guess what? I did learn new ways, but at the same time I learned self discipline and self control. Because I fight with people who know how to fight (ie capitalizing on mistakes). The urge to fight on the street has dissapeared. There is more to martial arts than fighting. If you go to a good school, then you won't feel the need to fight when you are outside the dojo/dojang. We cannot teach every hostile situation a student may encounter. We can only teach general situation, the student must adept and react quickly. Students are told to only use their martial arts if someone is trying to hurt them. If they have a knife or gun, do whatever the attacker tells you to do.
@kevinb71379 жыл бұрын
Trained fighters, and EXPERIENCED fighters are two very different things. Somebody who has grown up fighting knows more about fighting than slowly throwing haymakers. You can dole out every anti-violence cliche you can think of, but at the end of the day, if you are teaching martial arts FOR SELF DEFENSE, you need to train your students to (as you said) adapt and react quickly. Training dummy sparring partners are a good way to give people the confidence that they know how to defend themselves, without any of the skill or instinct or conditioning to back it up. Yes, there is quite a lot more to martial arts than learning how to fight (I began with capoeira, I learned to beat a drum and sing just as much as I learned to kick and evade). Likewise, the importance of actually training people to fight cannot be understated either. If people wanted solely to learn eastern philosophy, tradition, and to find themselves, they would go to temples and meditation retreats. If people wanted solely to learn to fight, they'd join sport fighting groups. There is a happy medium in which the martial and the artistic aspects of these traditions do not shadow each other, and if it isn't found, then you wind up with a mess like Jake Mace, who actually practices false teachings (look it up, he's been outed as a sham before).
@2012tkdstudent9 жыл бұрын
Kevin Brown I have looked into Jake Mace, and now I totally agree with your original. I do not know much about kung fu, but there are a several instances where he lowered his head. That would be an easy knock out. I also noticed that there are no sparring videos. I went to his site, and there is no information about his past master/sifu. In other words his "school" has no heritage. The forms look good, but anyone can look at a kung fu/karate form online. It can be practice until the person look good doing it.

@Gamesfan342608 жыл бұрын
+Fulca It's a slowed down version, in a real fight, you'd move much faster making the attackers window of opportunity to react far smaller. It's slower for newer people...and so anyone can see what's going on because KZbin doesn't allow a frame rate above 60fps which is far below the amount one sees in real life. (I'd estimate that humans move at a speed requiring 600 frames a second to see) (Fun fact, the human eye sees 1000 frames at max) (More fun facts, most people probably only see a 8th of that cause they don't need to see more than 30 when watching things and the 125 when walking around or playing a sport.)

Sometimes in hard and fast situations or in traumatizing situations, people see in "slowmo". Perhaps it already happened to you, mostly because your body reacts with a huge amount of adrenalin, that causes seeing like 1000 frames
@Gamesfan342608 жыл бұрын
the0nagers Yeah, 1000 is the highest the human eye can typically see but this is probably just an average of the typical human's maximum potential, you might see more, you might see less. Tis how Science results work, averaging.

wtf...... Hes your master?.... Hes a disgrace for any martial arists. (just like Kevin Brown said). He just sucks.... if you want to learn Wing Chun or other Martial Arts, it would be the best you go and learn from a real Master. Hes just the opposite of what you should learn.

Kung Fu means higher level of understanding/experience through hard work. Has as much to do with making tea, bread, painting walls or practicing martial arts, it can apply to almost anything. To say Kung Fu is martial arts, this is not correct. This is a common mistake. Actually, if you practice anything for a longer period, you will attain a certain level of expertise but never complete mastery. A life time is too short to attain any mastery, you may have attained a higher level of understanding. In the end, a small note, it is not even pronounced or written correctly, it should be Gong Fu or Gung Fu. If you have attained any higher understanding of any martial arts (not sports), you shouldn't use these words that incorrectly. As an example: A baker who has done the same job for 30 years, day in and out, has probably attained some Gong Fu in bread making.

Dion Minus He is 100% correct. Google it. The word 'kung fu' has evolved into the name for Chinese martial arts, but originally this was not the case.

To escape a Full Nelson , quickly ? Reach both hands overhead behind you : Locate the side of your attackers head , With your fingers behind his ear put your thumb into his eye/ tearduct . Attempt to remove eye . Ive used this in a street fight with a guy who outweighed me by 100 lbs . Within seconds , the only thing he was concerned about was the pain in his eye . I grabbed him by the throat and was proceeding to punch him out when I was restrained by onlookers . My sifu was the Late Grand Master Ting Fong Wong of The Golden Dragon Fighting Society .
