EDIT: A sunken scroll featuring Nails reads #PondSnailLikeABoss, between this and the "tanishi" reference in his Japanese name (see below), he's definitely a freshwater snail though the exact species is a bit ambiguous. Tanishi can be translated as river/pond/mystery/mud snail. Most sources point to the family Viviparidae. Thanks to Rat Basher in the comments for pointing out the scroll! To expand on Nails the snail, his Japanese name is Tanishi-tencho, the "tanishi" part is also the Japanese word for river snail or mystery snail. Google "Japanese mystery snail" and you'll see a very similar shell to Nails! Their shells are yellow when they're young and brown when they're older, so Nails must be on the older side.

pretty sure harmony's fish is a yellowtail clownfish which doesnt have the yellow due to the fact she neglects/starves the poor thing :')

Just a little detail, but there is one obscure shopkeeper character. Harmony only works at Hotlantis, but it's owned by a character named Barry C. Whom given his name and Harmony's Sunken Sea Scroll, where his profile picture is fish design, he's probably a barracuda, but that's still just a theory.

Personally Mr. Coco is my favorite out of all of them. He's SO SWEET to his customers, and that's shown in his dialogue when you're not at Lv. 4 or higher and can't enter shops. Mr. Coco treats you like you are sick and is genuinely concerned for you and your well-being, unlike the others who shun you away. I'm looking at you Jel le Fleur!

The scroll that mentions nails uses the phrase “#PondSnailLikeABoss” which implies that he’s a Pond Snail. Fun thing I thought I should bring up, since you seemed to be guessing what type of snail he was.

One animal I'd love to see as a character in the Splatoon series is the moray eel. There is a shark character in Deep See Metro in the Bird Beak Dogfish. Another animal I'd like to see is the blue angel sea slug or an actual cuttlefish.

There is an eel in Wet Floor... Also the Squid Sisters, Captain Cuttlefish, and the Cuttle Gals are all considered cuttlefish. Cuttlefish is simply a subspecies of Inkling.

@@takarijbartleby Wet Floor is the main band in Splatoon 2. They perform the Now or Never for that game. The bassist is an Eel. It's never been explicitly stated that the Squid Sisters and Captain Cuttlefish are exactly cuttlefish, but the Cuttle Gals are indeed confirmed to be cuttlefish and they look just like the Squid Sisters.

Speaking of Moray Eels, Frye (one of the new idols from Splatoon 3) comes from a long line of eel charmers and it seems that she has an entire horde (or Frye, I should say since a group of eels can be called a fry) of ‘em. Granted this isn’t a moray eel character and just a case of the animal being in Splatoon but its interesting nonetheless.

I was recently wondering about other creatures that could be in Splatoon. I was thinking "What about the other squid species" I'd love to see more inkling designs. Giant squids was my first thought and it branched into more, vampire squids, colossal squids etc. If it was included it be kind of like squid races.
