My uncle was a blacksmith working in Stepps coaliary in Scotland. He got me down once and it still gives me shivers when I think of how unsafe we would call the cages, for ascent and decent, today. But the world down below was just a bustle of activity and noise. Uncle Robert spent a great deal of his day just sharpening all the variety of cutting tools. That’s how it was then in the 30’s and 40’s.. From memory ‘the pit’ as it was known closed in the 80’s.. All is gone now above surface but these amazing tunnels magic secrets still lie beneath the earth. Trouble is those now living in the houses above will have no knowledge of the mine.. I’ll be gone soon too . Age is something you can’t fight. It’s adventurers, like you, who keep a small finger on our past. Thank you.👵🇦🇺🇺🇸

My Grandfather and Father both worked in the Anthracite Coal Mines in the Shamokin to Centralia Area of Pa. From the 1920's to the middle 1950's. Both had Black Lung, and COPD.

You’ve accumulated so much awesome material; have you ever considered taking all you have and building a documentary from it? The old mine machines, the discarded gear, the bottles, track, rails, hoists…it would be great for teaching kids all about the mines their great great great grandpas worked in. Great video here as always. Keep up the great work. I’m lovin it! Be safe out there.

8:06 This looks like the area where they measured out and cut the fuse to length so it could be tied into bundles. The first box usually had a lid and stored fuse rolls. The flat long table is to cut fuse to length. That sets the timing of the explosions so it makes an orderly hole. Next time look on top of the table to see any marks. Dean in Az

The pepsi can looked like about 1981 vintage. The poor old workbench died some time ago. The square bricks the bulkhead is made of is a 1940's - 1950's brick called 'speed tile.' It is miserable to demolish as it has hollows and forms nasty shards when it is hammered at. You would notwant to be caught in a building with dividers made of it in an earthquake.

The biggest killer in coal mines is black damp carbon monoxide, when your meter went off it was indicating low 02, that will have been caused by the black damp forcing out the air.

When your O2 sensor goes below acceptable level, what IS replacing it? CO? CO2? Methane? Scary thought! I admire your courage, sir!

@Najim1958 In coal mines there's typically higher levels of carbon dioxide and nitrogen. I've also experienced hydrogen sulfide a few times
