Join Martin on a real-life IFR flight in August of 2021. We are taking the Bonanza (N70TB) from Cedar Rapids, IA to Elkhart, IN on a typical Midwest summer day, with storms in the area. With some advanced planning (and a little luck, too), this flight turned out to be straightforward.
Route of flight: KCID - EON - MAPPS - KEKM
Altitude: 7,000 feet (eventually 9,000 feet)
A special thank you to EAA Chapter 132 for inviting Martin to visit and speak at their chapter meeting.

Martin, This is the first video of yours I've seen since recently getting my instrument rating. I watched the other hundred or so videos as I was training. I had a great instructor but it certainly was helpful seeing an experienced instrument rated pilot fly when I would allow myself some 'educational entertainment'. I would sit down at my computer and watch and rewatch your videos, often rewinding them to catch the details. I wanted to see real life proficiency, not perfection and I was motivated by what could be done with the instrument ticket. My Bonanza F33a cockpit looks a lot like yours so with your high definition cameras and attention to detail I knew exactly where you were on each approach. Thanks for all your efforts that went into making these videos.

Lived in Elkhart for several years and recall boarding several Air Wisconsin Fokker F27s to get to ORD right where you parked! Much preferred flying on my employer's Lear 35A or King Air 200 that used to be hangared just south of that point, but that was rare! Intended to learn to fly there, got busy with family issues, then had detached retinas after cataract surgery, so I'd have had to give it up before retirement anyway.

M…flying single pilot IFR is much tougher on many levels then flying with a crew of 2…no matter what the AC or conditions. Do not care if you are a high time ATP or a low time pilot…the dynamics are many and you must process to the correct decision thread. Your work demonstrates this and helps everyone no matter what the experience level. Well Done.

ink still wet on my ticket and had a perfect mild-IMC day...found out a few of the instruments in my dad's plane didn't like humidity of the day (sticky glideslope needle on HSI, attitude indicator roll gyro stuck), so we didn't even make it past runup...ugggh. Hopefully the shop gets it all put back together this week, its been down a month. It hurts to put any money into the panel because we know in a year, we will be replacing it all with new garmin glass.

Great video. I wonder why nobody seems to be checking static RPM at the beginning of the takeoff roll. Instruments in the green is a great callout, but we probably want to know if we're producing full power as well.
@martinpauly
@martinpauly 11 ай бұрын
With a constant speed propeller (such as on my Bonanza), a power reduction would likely not show any lower RPM. I take a quick glance at MP and FF in addition to oil temperature and pressure, but for actual power it's more a matter of what I'm used to feeling vs. what I'm feeling on *that* take-off. - Martin

John, for the cockpit it's hard to beat the iPad mini. I find anything larger will get in the way and obstruct your access to or visibility of something important. As for the subscription level, I'd start with the basic level and see what that does for you. It's easy to upgrade to a higher level later if you feel something is missing. Unless you already know you want the "Geo-Referenced Approaches & Taxi Charts" feature; then you might as well start with the pro plan. - Martin

Very interesting to watch and listen to your prestart checklist, Martin. This should be the standard methodology used by all pilots but may have not yet discovered the valuable technique of pointing or touching and verbalizing at the same time. In Japan, this is standard practice on the extensive and complex rail system. It's commonly called shisha kanko (point and call) and results in a very enviable safety record with a single "pilot" (train drivers or engineers) operation. Pointing and calling requires co-action and co-reaction among the operator's brain, eyes, hands, mouth, and ears.
@martinpauly
@martinpauly 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for pointing this out, Dave. I have been told by several instructors that touching (or pointing) is better than just looking, and saying it out loud is better than just thinking it. I will have to learn more about shisa kanko and get some more background. Best regards, Martin
