actually i did check thinkgeek, they said a potato would not provide enough power to operate voice and LED's, she just senses when the wires are hooked up to the nails, a little button inside the alligator clips.

The fruit/veggie battery relies on the flow of ions within the battery to create an electric current. Since most fruits contain enough ion to power it, pretty much anything that has enough juice (so the ions can flow) and does't fall apart when you stick in an electrode should be fine, I think. The difference would be what kinds of devices they can power and for how long. Citrus fruit (including lemon) could be better, I'd imagine, because of the high acidity (hence high amount of ions).
