Luka Modric's future at Real Madrid is uncertain as his contract expires in the summer. Modric, who has been with the club for nearly 12 years and won 24 major trophies, has had a frustrating season, starting only 11 of Madrid's 26 La Liga matches. Manager Carlo Ancelotti has stated that it is up to Modric whether he renews his contract or not, but the situation feels like a long farewell to one of Madrid's best-ever players. The club has a history of being unsentimental when it comes to parting ways with their brightest stars, as seen in the departures of Sergio Ramos, Raul, Iker Casillas, and Cristiano Ronaldo in the past. Ramos, for example, left for Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer after taking too long to respond to a contract offer. Modric's future could be similar, especially since Madrid has been more inclined to give their best players a proper send-off in recent years. Modric has been offered a role on Ancelotti's coaching staff if he decides to retire, but he wants to continue playing. The club has doubts about giving him another renewal, and Modric himself is unsure if he would renew if offered a new deal. He has been tempted by offers from clubs in Croatia, Saudi Arabia, and the United States.
