Did anyone actually listen to the club's proposal? Or is everyone believing what they are told by the media? From my understanding they want to break the monopoly that UEFA has on football. UEFA takes more than 1 billion home per season on the back of football teams. I like how everyone has forgotten how corrupt FIFA and UEFA are (blatter, platini, qatar 2022). Don't agree with the ESL concept but UEFA and FIFA are monopolies that must be challenged.

Perez probably took advice there was no legal impediment to the proposed football Superleague following a recent ruling by the European Court on a dispute between professional speed skaters and the International Skating Union. So had the UK still been in the EU the their legal power to prevent English clubs joining the Superleague would have been limited. Without those English clubs participation, the ESL was a non starter. Brexit stopped the ESL.

It started from a proposal to each one of the UEFA associations/federations at that time, and it had almost unanimous approval of clubs and fans altogether. It first had only 8 teams in Group Stage indeed, but it also had two preliminary rounds prior to the Group Stage. By contrast, the Super League would start just from the greedy minds of a few tycoons who have virtually no respect for their respective federations and fans.

UEFA was formed in 1954 whilst the European cup started in 1955 which means that they have the obligation to serve football, not just a business like the super league, after all 90% of UEFA revenue goes back into football, not pockets. You can create new tournaments and such but to challenge the very beginning competition and organization is criminal to the sport, the fans and more importantly every single person who's now dead who built up the sport from eusebio, cruyff, ronaldinho, maldini, jose mourinho everybody. The fact that it has more diversity within the competition with the 'less-elite' clubs participating are what made big special games special. Also, in UCL, the fact that these encounters between the big clubs are occasional are also the reason they are special. Scarcity creates and increases attraction and value. And ESL made these encounters with their /safe/ competition will make these encounters less special. UEFA's proposed Swiss model for 2024 is also bad for the same reason as why ESL won't work. Greed by these people in suits are clearly disconnected and out of touch with what's really happening on the pitch.

How did it survive the huge drop in attendances, to a fraction of what they are today, between the end of the 1950's and early 1980's? How did it survive the upsurge in hooliganism during the 1970's and '80's? How did it survive when there were no shirt sponsors and no, (then later, very few) televised matches? How did the English clubs manage after the mid 1980's, when they were banned from European competition for a while? How did Barcelona survive, when they went 30 years, winning just TWO La Ligia Titles, between the start of the 1960's and start of the 1990's, plus no champions Leagues/European Cups, until 1992? How did Manchester United manage to survive winning just ONE major trophy of ANY sort, after 1968 and prior to 1983 (and no more leagues until 1993!)?
