Far as i know if axle is not damaged,bearing,etc there is no reason to change it.Much more cost effective is to change clamp and if needed booth. The guy is fixing his car in drive way , so most likely hes trying to save money. And you should atleast clean all of the ac system , because you can easily kill your new compressor. And i know for a fact that you cant clean out all of the evaporator and radiator.

Youre right, it is more cost effective for someone who already has the tools or can rent them. But thats like having someone pull their own tooth because its the most cost effective route doesn't mean its the logical route. Your also right about evaporators, ive seen black death systems that need complete replacement and knocking compressors that have clean cores. You just never know till you get in there
