Shinobi is CIA/NSA, MI5/MI6, KGB, etc... Historical shinobi were always on the forefront of adopting modern warfare and information technology, they were amongst the first Japanese to embrace, amongst others, western firearms. Therefor, if one wants to train to follow the principles of the historical Shinobi, one has to train to be a modern shinobi.

I really enjoy your videos and books. As a martial artists and former Special Forces (Green Beret), I’ve always been interested in Ninjutsu. As a kid, I read a magazine article about ninjutsu and Special Forces and my I immediately found my goal of joining the military. I continued studying Martial Arts and researching ninjitsu. After getting out I began training people in skills I had learned in the military (medical, combatives, etc…). I guess you would call them the “Samurai Skills” and expanded into a few other areas and opened a training company (Green Ops). My time in Special Forces was very similar to your list. Military skills, Lock Picking, Human Psychology (interviewing, deception detection, indicators), psychological ops, Clandestine warfare, Languages, etc… As you stated, we had to know “everything about all things” and were often the Jack of all trades. I was even fortunate enough to train with members of our combatives committee that were trained in ninjutsu and Hwa Rang Do (Sulsa) like Gary O’Neal. Please keep up the great work.

I recently got into your channel thanks to a playthrough of ghost of tsushima, lol. But i come from a Military background. Scout. Ypir channel and shogun have really helped me learn alot. Where i live we have very few martial arts dojo but outside of that, alot of the shinobi ways i already practice, acting, accents, disguise, lockpicking etc. Mainly needing to read on japanese language, religions, and some of the less glamorous aspects. Definetly ordering books. Mainly comming from an academic standpoint, but i am also physically in shape and would love to practice things such as wall climbing with swords, grappling hooks and basic ninja tools. Just letting you know these you tube videos are helping bring people to practicing shinobi ways or at least taking the first steps to learning. So thanks a bunch mate.

A lot of things happen in Japan and In a very short period of time. 1300-1600 is only 300 years and they literally had everything. I really wish he would cover 1592-1598 that to me is the most interesting because it involves 3 army's from 3 counties. Japan Korea and China.

The Japan Self-Defense Forces have specialized units for various purposes, including counter-terrorism, intelligence gathering, and special operations, but they are trained in modern military tactics and techniques. They got trained by us Marines so probably a modern "japanese military shinobi" would be a Japanese RECON Marine working together with the Japanese Intelligence, The Defence Intelligence Headquarters (DIH) And because they got a Phonix in ther Logo properly they working together with us intelligence. By the way Like it's shown in the fictional Ps4/Ps5 Videogame Series Ninja Giden specially Ninja Giden 2 Check out Anthony's book modern Ninja Skills.

This is an EXCELLENT reference for the students of shinobi ways! However, I have a minor disagreement and it’s about the mystical aspect part. I do not believe that someone must perform old Japanese rituals and religious practices to have the true essence of ninjutsu. The Mansenshukai, for instance, is a heavily practical manual with a relatively few mystical arts in it. To add to that, many esoteric teachings in ninjutsu scrolls, such as the Mansenshukai and the Gunpo Jiyoshu, are actually practical and, sometimes, psychological tricks, but were viewed as magical since the science behind them might be unknown to the shinobi at that time. In my opinion and humble understanding of the Mansenshukai and the Shoninki, the true essence of ninjutsu is to protect your family and for your family’s prosperity, and it is not for personal gain. If you have that in mind and learn the practical skills only, including the mystical skills that have practical use, I believe you are in good shape. However, you can only make very limited use of ninjutsu in modern days of course.

Interesting to hear that you say that the Ninja would study the martial arts in their local region. Well Gyokko Ryu (And Togakure Ryu) was in the Iga area, Now it was probable therefore that the shinobi studied this and other forms of martial art. Hense why there is a deep connection with Gyokko ryu with Ninjutsu. After all it is said that Sandayu Momochi was a master of Gyokko Ryu and other schools. In regard to the Bujinkan, well most people say they are not studying Ninjutsu, and only play it up when Hatsumi wants to sell a book. They are more into Koryu now.

They used to teach more from the 3 shinobi schools but don't anymore. I suppose it also really depends on which Bujinkan sensei you are learning from. I am a To-Shin Do student and wanted to learn the infiltration etc. so I started to read up on that stuff. Also there's individual Bujinkan books of some of the schools, in one of them they teach metsubushi and other famously ninja things.

Having a sort of sheet to the wall that conceals your full personality and having multiple personas depending on whether or not you're in the field is closely related to the study of internal family systems in modern psychology. It views that everyone, regardless of profession, relies on a large number of two-dimensional "archetypes" that allow them to tackle different challenges and stressors. It's the job of the therapists to discern each archetype, their roles, and ultimately build a three-dimensional picture of a person.

Hi, I have a question and please forgive me if you’ve covered this before, which you most likely have. I’ve been on and off the ninja research train for years; however, I’ve recently come across multiple KZbin videos, mostly from Dean, as well as online articles claiming that the Bansenshukai is loaded with lies and falsehoods. One article makes a similar claim about the Shoninki. Essentially these are stating that, the Bansenshukai specifically, was written only for the purpose of appealing to the Tokugawa shogunate, therefore, it is highly inaccurate. I highly doubt these claims as I’ve observed multiple KZbinrs experiment with many of the tools and concoctions found in the book with, what I would consider impressive results. In my own experience as a private investigator, as well as the experiences I’ve learned about from a family member who was involved in covert operations during the Vietnam war, the philosophical principles and tactics laid out in the books seem extremely credible. I’m curious of your take on these claims, are these Bujinkan holdouts or could there be something to it? Thanks.

I don't meant to go off topic, but I recommend watching Bad Influence (1990). All of the core tenets of historically accurate Ninjutsu are all there -- in a modern context. There's even an improvised you-know-what scene involving a taillight. For kendo practitioners, there's -- a scene with a golf club. And then another improvised tactic involving an iron grate spike pulled out of a courtyard fountain. Thank you for this video and for the book, Modern Ninja Warfare. I hope that as many people as possible strive to become more like the Shinobi of the Sengoku era.

Read the books for the historical and learn them. The history is important and fascinating, but then apply some Modern techniques: parkour, dark psychology and social engineering, physical pen testing and lock picking, wrestling, BJJ, MMA and improvised weapons, stealth tactics both physical and digital, learn to make the traditional tools and use them. Love the books and practice is more fun, though I don't get to as often as I like! Keep up the great work!

I would skip mma, and bjj. They take years to master. Try the Fairbairn system, Target Focus Training or Krav Maga instead. Proven and have short curriculums, depending on the teacher.

In them it is about how to set up a cover identity, invisible inks, sabotage. Yes methods that may be dated now, but much more modern and ones we know were used by our own people.

A modern "ninja" would simply be translated into the modern day intelligence officer. Rarely are they ever put into the field, they mostly just manage networks of spies that they establish. It's too much risk to go in yourself, so you recruit, trick or manipulate people in certain positions to give you the information you need. I doubt an intelligence officer has any use for martial arts, weapons training, lockpicking etc. He uses the people who have access to what he needs to get it for him. A shinobi's duties and roles have been specialized into dozens of different modern roles, where if someone needs to be assassinated you don't use the intelligence officer, you call up the special forces like the SAS, then they work as a unit like The Increment, kill whoever needs to be killed and then go back to resume their normal duties. We have so many specialists that are so good at every single one of these ninja tasks that it is not really feasible to have a single person do everything a ninja did, because a ninja does not have all the hyper-specialized training as all the people that an intelligence officer has at his disposal. The closest thing you will get to something like a ninja in the modern day is maybe a corporate spy or a saboteur. Not to mention that spying is done via satellites, drones, hacking, viruses etc. It's not even that necessary to go into the field to learn everything about a person, unless he has little or no digital footprint.

Learning magic/witch craft is part of that. But I believe you could operate as a shinobi without it too. Casting spells is part why people feared the shinobi . You're pretty much a fighting witch . A special forces operator w a side of witchcraft as a skill set.

Interesting ideas: The concepts are very useful for some people's personal development and goals; and those people should study and train, whether alone, or collectively in my opinion. What I studied and learned in the '80s and '90s has helped me immensely, and still informs a lot of my life today, and I don't regret a single moment of it, from the old "Shadows of Iga Society" literature, newsletters and seminars to attending ROTC "Ranger Platoon", and later my military intelligence and JFK Unconventional Warfare Center and School studies and training components to my personal martial arts, hand-to-hand and very conservative, limited parkour-related practices and U.S. Border Patrol training and experiences playing cat-and-mouse on the Mexican-U.S. border with human traffickers, illegal aliens and drug cartels who literally put a price on our heads when I was a federal agent; ALL of these interesting activities were informed and enhanced by my previous ninjutsu studies and training in the 1980's with Stephen K. Hayes and others during the old "ninja boom". Much of it was useful, valid and authentic, but much of it was also fantasy-based, but still a lot of fun! I hope that the ninjutsu culture and lore remains alive for future generations to benefit from and enjoy!

Im Gen X I started Bujinkan Ninjutsu back in 2007 I no longer train that style of Ninjutsu nor any other Ninjutsu style. However I do study a kobudo style Asayama Ichiden Ryu

I remember the ninja battles from dean, choson ninja and ur partner that is in the vid here. I remember a email convo we had shared over Hatsumi's teacher, and a vid I had done on how to make a rope climbing harness that i used to climb a tree. you ask where did I learn that from Ninjutsu, I replied I did not learn it from ninjutsu i learned it from rock climbing and tat I just had added it to my tool box way back. In Griffith's translation of the Sunzi Bing-fa, in chapter 1.26, he mentions that some type of device was used to "add up" the calculations of the five factors and seven elements. He suggests it may have been like an abacus or something similar. I have found nothing anywhere that even discusses HOW the calculations were made. Have you discovered anything in your research about the use of any kind of device which was or may have been used during the calculations by which the various factors and elements were "added up and compared" as it were? 3 points for our side, 2 points for the enemy, etc or however it may have worked? OR could you perhaps do a video discussing this topic of the mechanics of actually doing the calculations, kind of like you did when you set up a model of a castle in order to study fortified defence, attack/siege, disposition of forces in the defence, etc?

Ppl on social media trying give off the impression that they’re something they’re not. So you give credit to this...Tada Genji and other thing or whatever for ninja martial arts but also discredit the Bujinkan, To-Shin Do, Akban etc. who literally have the ninja arts in their material. Why? Where's the bias here? Is it because they're vetted the way YOU and other naysayers want (because apparently someone not wanting to reveal something means its fake or that its not recognized by a GOVERNMENT who's motivations are purely POLITICAL also means its fake) or what? Bujinkan, To-Shin Do, Akban etc. their whole thing is that they teach what the ninja used. Hell if you wanna go further the one of the ninja specific schools in Bujinkan teaches metsubushi among other famously ninja techniques. If you wanna go even FURTHER the Bujinkan USED to teach more of the 3 ninja specific schools but don't anymore because Hatsumi says they aren't practical in today's world (which I think is shortsighted of him it just needs to be tailored). Why not talk a senior To-Shin Do sensei or someone from Bujinkan etc. as well? You have NEVER talked to Stephen Hayes, his senior students, or anyone from the other ninja schools but only talk to those who share your opinion. That is not scholarly research its a circle jerk. Why NOT have an interview with them? I can tell that this Toda Genji and the aforementioned organizations are pretty much one in the same but yet you give credence to one over the other. Is it because you got kicked out of the Bujinkan and have sour apples? Yeah, I read the stories which are easily googleable. in addition, your whole thing with Natori Ryu is basically the same concept as what Bujinkan et al are doing but according to people on the koryu subreddit you are mistaken. "Natori-ryu is not a koryu. It is essentially a reconstruction project by Antony Cummins, who doesn't have much martial training nor any..." This is not meant to talk crap about you but to point out that its very interesting my school, To-Shin Do, is not seen as real ninjutsu to you but YOUR project and this Tada Genji are legit when they are both centered around the same concept of learning techniques from a class of warriors who doubled as assassins, intelligence gatherers etc. saying all of this however, as a student of Ninpo I have read your book Ninja Skills and the Shoninki etc. It's great stuff, like learning when to sneak into somewhere etc.

No real disrespect intended. You're basically just trying to promote your books to the public.. your focus is always hitting on being a traditional shinobi. Real today. now ninjas. Range from real spies from basic hackers to con/scam gypsy grifters types. Organized thieves. Assassination is obviously fopaugh. But it is done quite effectively by government like agents Cia mossod etc.. don't forget corporate espionage too. why bother being a " traditional Shinobi ninja"? Unless you're selling the Hollywood bujinkan ninja image. To wannabe shinobis. For a modern operator. Tier 1 seal type delta team killer. Mear eaters. They have trained real martial arts. Current to their needs and today's environment. But history is hard to recreate. Easier to hypothetically assume.

Be aware this guy is known as the uoh/who man when he trained for a short time in actual training with the Bujinkan. He is completely corrupted ethically and banned from all real ninjutsu training schools. He harms the truth of our family Ninjutsu traditions out of revenge for his embarrassing gimp superior attitude which got him known for the screaming whimpering noise he made as he insisted upon being treated as he was upon entry to training for the first time in his life as if he really was a Godan Black Belt. And he couldn't handle his constant failures at pretending he already had the skills of a fifth degree ninja.
