The only reason you put the AISIN 6-speed in 4th is it locks up the torque converter above 80kmh, 5th and 6th will too, but if there is any load it won't which means you are flaring the torque converter and cooking it. Its 1990s technology, a ZF8 Speed would be better which locks every gear including 8th and will not unlock no-matter the torque load.

Yeah that was great scenery and an honest review but 20 litres per 100 is what my old F100 did and it could pull 4.5 ton legally and a lot more if required. Admittedly none of the modern creature comforts but at least if it shat itself in the middle of nowhere I had a good chance of fixing it (which I did but nothing major). I would hate to lose hill decent with passengers and van in tow.

I got a scan gauge which can tell you when the TC is locked. It helped me understand my LC200 auto when towing 3.4t and I now use S4 and S5 if there’s no hills or headwind etc. When engine load gets to about 80% the TC unlocks and uses more fuel so I change down to S4 and the TC will lock.

Fun in a different way, mind you its still very new to me, so it may wear off.. But I know exactly what you mean, my 2016 grey one sounded so good, pre dpf big airbox big 4inch stainless snorkel, and exhaust a real head turner that one was.. the white one not so growly, motor stock bar a 3 inch exhaust but retaining the dpf, so its probably as much fun without the noise, but can spin up the 285s pretty easy plus give ford rangers a run for their money in traffic where the white one was no chance.. Neither compare to my old grey one... The funnest of the 3... Thanks for the question..

I love watching overland Oz videos... mainly because I'm from NZ and am in no way interested in snakes and spiders and drop bears. I just like the scenery. We have those things here (except snakes), but they don't kill you, at worst they just make you itch for a few days. The drop bears here don't kill you, they just get overly attached and won't leave you alone and it just gets really awkward. Be very careful as a tourist.

Good test you are doing. The 2.8 uses a lot of fuel when it’s worked hard. This model is more expensive than the previous model and you get 4 less cylinders that you have to flog the guts out if for performance. This I’m sure will shorten its life span. I’m guessing at full gvm and gcm at over 7 tonne it’s performance won’t be very good. Toyota is taking the piss out of its customers.
@TeamBulletOffroad10 ай бұрын
It went good towing the comp truck which in total was around 6 tonne, but I hear you re the longevity...
@toejoe507610 ай бұрын
Should have the v6 from the 300 series in it if the v8 engine is to be phased out. This is all about Toyota maximising their profits by putting that little 4 cylinder in a 70 series. For now it’s a big novelty because it has a auto box. After a year or 2 when owners see high fuel consumption and poor performance trying to overtake fully loaded towing , they might see through the smoke and mirrors.

Any Hill Descent that I do with or without a trailer and it's slippery or gravelly even both I always lock it in four-wheel drive low range and put the automatic in first gear and let the car do itself and I don't touch the brakes ever. And when it does slide I still have four wheels turning that will help keep the car under control and slippery conditions. Might I also add my tyre pressure could be as low as 18 psi and that is on all terrains

If you're going to be using it regularly for towing, kept an eye on the coolant level, once the car hits 120-130,000kms. The 2.8 willnt have the longevity of V8, if used the same way. Admittedly the V8 is/ was never power machine, but its reliable carrying heavey loads.

@TeamBulletOffroad10 ай бұрын
Always walk it as ive never driven anything that I couldn't walk.. Judge the flow and direction you need to exit not having to fight the flow. Ive seen vehicles been turned because drivers heading directly to exit not allowing for flow, and nice momentum without being too much wheelspin.. Each crossing needs to be judged individually. Having has so many v8s etc. the delivery of the power in the 4 cyl is so different to the v8 especially down hill. There just seems to be more “mass” in the v8 and so torque (even tho less) is better spread. But maybe thats me. I even looked at a zf8 speed conversion on my 2020 79. Can i justify the $30,000 price difference between a hilux and 4cyl 79 (load carrying aside) 🤔 i will have to keep watching your adventures before i out down the coin.

Please tow in 4th, 2800 revs is the peak of power, or we'll get a new group of people complaining about the motor not being strong enough. This is not the V8, High it may seem, but you use less fuel at higher revs. I know people say it's fine in 5th but they sell the cars in 2 years and the next owner has to pay for the piston blow out.

Totally mate. Towing a 2.6t van behind a 2021 Hilux. Trans temps & EGT’s run way cooler towing in 4th rather than 5th. Only pulling about 2600rpm@100kph and does it easily.

Thanks to both of you, I will do this on our upcoming trip to Tasy, and let you know differences..

May I ask why didn’t you buy a hilux? In my opinion this is a less comfortable and more expensive hilux.
@TeamBulletOffroad10 ай бұрын
Live axle front, robust, strong you can fit a 35ich shoe on it with 2inch lift, sorry to disappoint apart from my comp truck the last hilux I drove was a 2011 N70 and as soon as my kids were out of capsules the 79 was in.... Theres no comparison, approach, departure. Factory twin locked... Thanks for asking...

@@TeamBulletOffroad Fair enough mate.

The best part of the 79 was the return of your money when selling it. Now it's a botched version I wonder how that will go.

I believe the factory fitted snorkel is not water tight and recommended to fit an aftermarket one?
@TeamBulletOffroad10 ай бұрын
Absolutely, but as you may have seen in an earlier video, there not the same as previous model and safari are saying 2nd quarter of the year they will become available, thats when I decided to go to the trouble of pulling mine apart and sikaflexing all the joins.. @@TeamBulletOffroad makes sense and thanks for the video link TBO - a lot of those tracks look familiar when I lived in Canberra and took my amazingly capable ‘97 Subaru Forester via back roads of Braidwood, Araluen Valley and Moruya - 11 Subarus later I’ve finally gone for a Hilux with better camping capacity now equipped with an aluminium canopy - it has better ground clearance and descent capability with no hot brakes - even stock with a Safari snorkel the shallow rivers no longer stop me - I much prefer the auto now with effortless climbing and only two foot pedals to work with - I think the V8s will start to loose value and appeal now for city- based folk who only do occasional off-roading but like weekend touring - the four cylinder appears equally capable for most of us - suspension and brakes will certainly be worth looking at providing warranty issues don’t arise - for me the automatic Troopcarrier is the perfect city dweller/two-person tourer.

@@johnnumbat9782 Thanks for the comment John, yes the scenery and even the tracks and rivers are so similar to nearby Bendethra- Deua National park, so no your not mistaken.. As long as we all enjoy the amazing Aussie bush, and sounds like you have in a variety of vehicles.. Yes an auto troop would be cool.. The price of the V8s could go either way, a lot of people really hate the 4cyl concept, so that may spike the V8 price, especially if something does come a-miss with any of the guys doing the testing... 1 issue with any of these early ones on the tests people are doing could have a roll on affect...

Don’t just look at the gear and fuel - look at your transmission temperature in 4th and other gears.

I agree, but my track record, if a better 79 comes out, most likely ill update again, I went from a 2016 pre dpf to a 21 dpf and better gearing to the auto.. An auto V8 is what ill settle on... But they won't give us that!

They kick some bad boy butt at night sitting behind the wheel though..I noticed though filming the 200s a while back they flickered, just that they run at daytime I feel is the issue.. You CANNOT turn them off...
