Admittedly I do get pretty depressed during the winter months, but it totally becomes awesome during the summer months because it is gorgeous with all the greenery. And even though I have lived here my entire life, I still like the rain, the sound of the rain soothes me.

Yup. I almost moved there, but they gave us an apartment that we hadn't been shown, basement level, one window that was a sorta of half-window where the little ditch area was full of leaves and water. There was mold in a lot of the rooms. I'm sure not everyone there had such a bad experience but it cost me my deposit and a lot of stress.

Portland area still gets blazing-hot sunshine from June through September. Here are only 2 seasons: drizzle season and hot season, nothing in between them. Anchorage Alaska on the other hand is partially cloudy pretty much all summer long. It is located near 60° parallel, which is a band of perpetually bad weather in northern hemisphere. Check into it.

You have done your homework as far as housing expenses are concerned. Portland's mass transit is one of, if not *the*, best in the country, with many cities using it as a model. There are many ways to cut expenses & save money & considering Oregon has no sales tax, that is one huge benefit straightaway. I agree with you 100% about weather/light as they relate to health/wellness & have similar issues. I lived in Portland for 13 years & did not own an ac unit. I live in MN now & would ( cont'd )

Portlanders/Oregonians do not let the drizzle/mist affect their activities in the least. My skin, hair, & nails were at their most beautiful when I lived there for 13 years. I aged slower there than I have now that I am back in the ( by comparison ) much more rigorous Midwest ( weather-wise ). I cannot wait to return to my beloved Oregon, the weather-wimp capitol ! lol ... I am very fair-skinned so never suffered for lack of daylight. The produce & foliage are beyond compare ! Out of this world.

A lot of people make it thru the winter in oregon without even really owning a coat. Its pretty rare that its so bad where a hoodie wont do. And you wont ever really see anyone use umbrellas here much because its more work than its worth.

I am not sure if it is related to the weather but because the Willamette River flows through Portland, there are a lot of bridges that cross the Willamette River. There are two bridges specifically, Saint Johns Bridge and Vista Bridge (does not cross the Willamette but is located in the West Hills near Vista Point). Both of those bridges have their share of people jumping off to their death, which is sad.

Yeah, I am OK with the expense because I have suffered renting in Washington DC and Manhattan. So I won't be shocked. In fact besides the weather, one other reason I am going to Portland is that there are only so many places where it is OK to be carless and the others are WAY more expensive than Portland and/or have weather that I don't like...for instance San Fran or NYC costs 3 or 4 times as much, DC costs at least twice as much, closer to 3 times as much. Seattle is getting on towards 2 X

I am actually thinking of moving there because of the cloudy skies. I suffer from horrible migraines and the sun is a huge trigger. I have been suffering living in Florida for nearly 4 years and I have such a hard time with the intense sun, humidity and heat that I have basically been living like a vampire here. Any tips on good neighborhoods or ones to avoid? I need to live in the city itself because due to health issues I no longer drive. Thanks

Hey Shab, when you say that the job market sucks there, what kinds of jobs are you talking about? Are restaurant jobs hard to get as well? Do you think there's good opportunities for a massage therapist up there? I'm so done paying $1300/month for a junior studio in L.A man, and the heat, ah the heat in California is too much, 9 freaking months of overwhelmingly hot weather.

I am a New Englander.. I spent a little time in Portland.. the weather wasn't depressing.. the social climate was more than anything.. job market stunk, it was too passive aggressive for an east coaster like me and I ended up leaving. Well, I heard that in the summer Portland's humidity actually goes DOWN as the temps go up and that many folks don't even have a/c also that summer is only 3 months and the rest is cloudy. Now here in FL a/c is a year round thing and so is the sun. I don't think I could handle the cold weather in AK although I could tolerate 24 hour darkness better than most people. I think I have reverse SAD. Isn't the cost of living higher in AK? I guess it is a good place to go if you are a single woman lol.

Besides Not telling you that the town is truly infested with Lesbians like San Francisco is with "Gays". It snows every so often in winter there otherwise it rains, albeit mildly sometimes, some times heavy, almost every month the year round. In November maybe 30 days in a row, August one day. But it is almost always wet. Mildew is a major problem for housing EXTERIORS. You can walk down the street and see a house that is in disrepair and it will have big spongy mildew growing in the cracks of its siding. The cleaning of which and rain gutters would be a good task to train the ubiquitous squirrels to perform. During about 9 months out of the year it is like a gigantic locker room after the team has showered up and left. It does get cold there. The gardeners cut the lawns even on rainy days, because if they didn't some times they wouldn't have a job. There are many people who live there, who have S.A.D.. Now I personally Love the weather there, as it does keep the sort of people who like to go around half naked with combs stuck in their dos away. And the drug dealing and addictive user population is minimal, because what chance does an addict have of running amok on a cold windy rainy night in the streets without winding up either lost in the woods or alone in jail? Only an addict would be running around in the streets or parks in that weather at night. Thankfully. There is not a huge THIRD WORLD population of unwed mothers and pimps on the streets, those niches are taken up mostly by the inbred descendants of the Jack-Mormon settlers, i.e. THE POOR WHITE TRASH. Sorry Shab A, but you fibbed a little. I think you have a slight problem letting people know that you love that climate. Also the A.A. is top heavy with Native Americans, as there is a large population of same. It has taught me the old adage "Too many Chiefs spoil the Sioux"

The only people that like that weather are people from the desert. Everyone else H8s it. You can have rain all day there and yet get a half inch. It just never dries up from October thru May. The only heavy rains are around Xmas. Everything smells like mold and mildew. And he's wrong about cold there. 32 degrees with 100% humidity is freezing cold, which it is like a lot in the wet season. Go and live there for 5 years or more and tell me you like the weather. It starts to get to you badly. The locals that have lived there for a long time feel like they can't leave because PDX is so different, they can't adapt back to the real world. He can't find good food because he lives out in anywhere America, not in the city. The only reason to live in PDX is the food. Unless you like to sit inside and read all day, you are gonna H8 it there. Or unless UR a person that hikes in all kinds of weather you will H8 it there. You will love it there if you are a Racist though, or Transgender, there are as many Transgender and Gay folks in the city as there are Str8 people, and they all mix together. Don't be surprised if the person you decide to date is Transgender and you don't know it. That is the Transgender Homeland and they seem to love the weather

literally DIE without it with the dewpoints upwards of 70%, bringing daytime temps up to 105-110 degrees easily, dropping to a nice drippy 75 or so at night. There were a few uncomfortable nights there, sure, but NOTHING like the Midwest. I grew up here in MN, I know what I am talking about. Also, if you enjoy the simple pleasures of say, enjoying a sunset or an evening in your yard or garden, you can do so in Oregon w/out bugspray. Never put it on any of my children til I returned to MN.

I lived in Portland for 29 years. I love the weather, restaurants (about 1,000 restaurants in Portland), go to the coast and you'll taste seafood galore. The job market can be better, but there are a lot of jobs that people don't know about - you just gotta do your research. I don't know why you're complaining about the mist when you came from real raindrops of midwest. The weather is way better here than Manila, Philippines where I was originally from.

Sweden and other northern European countries are known for suicides towards the end of winter. because the greyness seems endless and triggers depression. the government introduced Sunlight bulbs in cafes etc. where you can sit and get your daily fix. to fight depression. Maybe Portland is similar with grey and long darkish winters. its never the cold or the magic of snow which gets you depressed. but the inbetween state, the lack of drama of nature, i like to say.

There are tons of beautiful homes. But it's not uncommon to see people in their 30s still living at home, or 6 20 yr olds sharing a 2 bedroom place. Most people in OR aren't materialistic they are mostly cultured nature lovers. Not there are people in any city willing to over pay for clothing, but OR not so bad.

Tampa and Miami are in the top 10 most rainiest cities list and they are in the "sunshine" state. Seattle and Portland do not even appear on the top 10 list. So things are starting to make sense now. I've never considered mist as rain. In fact I've never worn or carried rain gear on a misty day because I don't get wet. That possibly explains all the outdoor activities available in that area. Thanks for the info. Portland here I come! :)

And like Tom Maccall said; "come visit us... just don't move here."
