I'm always amazed about how they portrayed monk's therapist as someone competent that we usually can't understand until we finally see how it works on monk. An also I loved how they rejected that "the protagonist cures all his illness because of the power of love or a miracle" monk is shaped in that way and they know it. I really relate to him.

A popular talking point about the show is the fact that Monk has Autism. it's never addressed in the show, because back when it was made there wasn't much discussion about Autism, thankfully now a days autism and autistic characters are represented more often. I remember the creator of the popular show Rick and Morty, found out he was ASD and that makes sense another popular character he made was Abed from Community who was name dropped as having aspersers in the first episode. The Rick and Morty creator then went on to diagnose the main character Rick with autism which was a big win for the community, and it made perfect sense he displayed many autistic traits. But its funny that even before Autism was a main line talking point, there was a popular show about a character with Autism and how they went through the world. The show arguably is more about Monk's autism than his OCD. OCD doesn't explain his odd social behavior or his weird traits, but realizing he's on the spectrum it makes those things make much more sense. And I'm glad that people really enjoyed his character it's always nice to see Autism appreciation.

Monk is one of my favorite shows of all time, and I wonder if the writers were ever in therapy because it seems like they understand a lot of how it works. It's a shame people don't talk much about Monk these days; it did so many things right. I'd be really interested in your assessment of Tony Shalhoub's acting in the show and whether it mirrors OCD and whatever other disorders Monk has. Maybe even a diagnosis? He seems to have some issues reading social cues too and I've always wondered if there was more to that. Regardless, I'm really glad they got the therapy scenes accurate. Are you going to analyze Dr. Bell later on in the show?

I remember that in this episode Monk felt he was ready to go back to work and wanted to know whether his therapy thought he was ready too (he needed his recommendation). I always thought the doctor tested him here because he wanted to see if Monk was able to concentrate on the priorities the situation required over his own personal priorities. (During the episode we see Monk doing just that, getting into a sewer to save Sharona, and _that's_ when he finally gets his recommendatin). Am I reading too much into it?
@LiveOnPurposeTV3 жыл бұрын
I don't think so. Sometimes it takes an action to show that we are ready for the next step.

I really liked this video! Having been in therapy for a short time, I can appreciate that he is addressing Monk's issues, not a laundry list. (Mine would not discuss my reason for being there which I made very clear in the first session - how to navigate to survive after the death of my youngest son. All she wanted to talk about was my childhood which is why it was a short time seeing her!). The most annoying thing about it was that I chose her because she had lost a child and I foolishly thought she would be responsive to all the obstacles - not ask me questions from when I was four or five years old! None of that had anything to do with how I could survive emotionally, or even physically, having to walk, multiple times a day into the room where my son died. Now, more than 25 years later, it still angers me that she ignored my reason for being there.

Dr. Jenkins, unfortunately I cannot remember the exact episode where a therapy takes place but the whole series "united states of tara" starring tony colette playing a housewife who experiences life with her alters was very interesting to see when which alter appears, seemed to be a pretty functional self protection method of a deeply traumatized inner child. Besides... Monk was an amazing and famous tv show here as well. Love your positive videos as much as the ones with your lovely wife giving great advice for parents and stressed out moms 😏 stay safe during these challenging times. Best wishes from Germany 🤗

What I really really appreciate about monk because I see a therapist myself is that those scenes never are portrayed as being funny or making fun of people that have these kinds of issues. That's something I think that sometimes in film or tv it's more about making fun of the profession or the people getting treated. So, I am thankful for shows like monk and certainly law and order and others that treat the profession with respect. I think the creator of monk said a lot of therapists had sent letters about how thankful they were for how well those sessions were portrayed on the show. Anyways thank you for posting the video.

I think I'll always think highly of the thought that went into making Monk because they worked with OCD specialists, so I'm glad to hear that as a doctor you believe they did a great job bringing the show to life. I'm curious what your thoughts are on other therapy sessions on the show, including the ones with Dr. Bell and the replacement therapists from that one episode where Dr. Kroger retires early.

This might be kind of a stupid question, but in monk, a few times, dr. Kroger sees monk at night. So, I was wondering is that true to life? Do psychiatrists see patients at night, in the case of an emergency, which in a few episodes dr. Kroger gives monk an emergency appointment. So, since you're a psychiatrist, is that something that ever happens either with you or anyone?
@LiveOnPurposeTV3 жыл бұрын
james amick, It is very rare. Most psychologists have regular hours. If there is a life-threatening situation that could change, but not normally for regular appointments.
