I think Katie was really into it at the beginning. She has a hugh crush on Tom. But as more time went by, she realized how insane it all was , and started waking up to the bizarre beliefs and she started faking it for the sake of her marriage . Especially when you can’t have a private life , and you have people around you constantly . You’re being watched , monitored in your marriage, child rearing and your own actions .

As a mom, I would do anything in my power to protect my children. I thought her pregnancy was a surprise and the wedding was a "shotgun wedding." So, I wasn't surprised that after Katie had a couple of years to see behind the Scientology curtain, she took Suri and ran the other way. I wonder if Nicole Kidman has ever wished she'd done the same thing.

I have had over 200 hours of training dealing with preschoolers. One of the really key things I learned was the brain development of children and the fact that they cannot - CANNOT - process abstract ideas until the age of 8 or 9. Until then, they are literal thinkers. Example: if you say to a four year old we are having chocolate mousse for desert, their mind goes immediately to a moose made of chocolate. Now there are exceptions, of course, prodigies, etc., however, you never set precedent using exceptions. This makes me think of the mind fracturing I have read about from survivors and how their brains compartmentalize into MPD's in order to survive the abuses. This is sick with a capital "S". I understand that CoS sees children as small adults, but doesn't make it right.
@kateashby3066

Going to put a 1 here. I think Katie's was freaking out at her child being in the cult. I read ages ago about how with his other children when they were "with" him were housed somewhere separately while he got on with cult stuff, he expected them to do the same. Back when they were still married, I read an interview, and the scene was set up with the 2 of them in the room and baby Suri crawling around while the interview was taking place, and I forget what the question or comment was, but it was something along the lines of what were they seeing in terms of the little personality beginning to emerge, and Katie answered something like, "she's a strong woman" and the interviewer was fishing for clarification, and Katie merely repeated what she'd just said ... 'Um. Whuh-aat? Well, that's pretty weird,' I thought. Then I just kind of brushed it off as, 'well they are Scientologists; must be a Scientology thing.' Didn't have a clue what a Scientology thing was before this, but that was my introductory inkling, I suppose.

Auditing reminds me of confession to a priest when I was a child. No choice in the matter. I always made up some bad stuff to get it over with. So f'ed up. Now a recovering Catholic as an adult

Auditing is nothing like been at confession...your not in the same room as the priest,the priest can't see your face and the do not keep you against your will,you were in and out in 2 minutes,it actually instills in you a lot,where I'm from we were glad to go to the Catholic school,education is the best and it gives you a start in life I'm thankful for...

I've only done confession once, for the Confirmation. Never again. Made up some crap, can't remember what but it was awkward for both priest and I. And stupid. As an adult, I now feel it's wrong, although I do agree that admitting to a wrong helps to combat shame...But better to do that with a trusted loved one, no? However, my Catholic "education" was nowhere near good enough by other Christian's POV, like my cousin in an Evaangelucal church who signed a celibacy card. Girls made these vows to their pastors (FFS!!!) to remain celibate until marriage. Ick. That creeped the heck out of me and I was so grateful I was a Catholic when I heard about this a teen.

Excellent. This podcast seems so well-balanced and is not too political; but still with great investigative journalism into unusual subject matter.. FINALLY, there is an interactive podcast that covers interesting topics, with simple and plain talk about real-life stories that are not the norm, and yet not trashy. FINALLLY,, there's something interactive on KZbin, around 3am, when I'm often the only in the house that is still awake! So thank you very much for creating this post where simple, plain talk is the order of the day. Sending much luv from Canada! 🙏♥️🇨🇦♥️🍁🙏

At the time Katie left Tom, I remember a report that said that Tom had agreed with Katie that Suri wouldn't be put through Scientology until she was able to choose (I don't remember if an age was mentioned), but Katie found out that Tom had already started Suri on the Scientology path behind Katie's back and that's why she left so quickly.

When I was 14 I was almost indoctrinated into Scientology . I bought the book Dianetics with my allowance money. I didn’t know it was a cult. I was a kid . I trusted adults . I remember back then I loved reading books. So I took the book home and tried reading it and couldn’t get past the first paragraph. I ended up throwing it out. Never talked to those ppl again. I was a typical teen, I wanted to be with kids my own age and working on my first kiss. My parents were Christians and were not into some crazy new religion. I realize now that God was watching over me, all my life. ❤

I went into the Scientology centre in London in the late 90's. I wanted to buy a book to learn more about it. I was taken into a side room by a man and repeatedly asked for my name and address. I kept refusing saying I just wanted to buy a book. The man left and spoke to someone outside for a long time and then came back into the room. He gave me the book and I paid with cash and then he gave me my change. He gave me more money in change than I paid him for the book! So I left with the book and a profit. I thought about it after and decided this was a tactic to try and get me to come back. To make me think good things happen to Scientologists. They really are creepy and manipulative.

What Aaron describes about a child in auditing is exactly the same as I felt about being forced to attend school. Even as a child I knew they were lying to me. Still I was told to provide the answer they wanted to hear in order to pass the test so I could have a phucn' break during the summer rather than having to attend summer school. I resented having to go and hated every minute of it. Now looking back I'm annoyed that I was forced to attend a 12+ year long indoctrination camp where they teach people how to be good slaves.

I've never forgotten grade one. We were given a paper with a circle and the word Yellow underneath. We were supposed to colour it yellow because it was supposed to represent the sun. I coloured mine orange and crossed out the word yellow. Omg did I get in trouble for that. That was just the beginning. I ended up kicking my teacher in the shin for hurting a friend. School and I weren't a great match either.

Any kind of auditing of any child, I personally would consider child abuse! Full stop. the damage done is irreversible as it would put children under a traumatic experience. It's ridiculous that this is allowed to go on anywhere.
