Real Reason Why US Is Silent On Bangladesh Chaos, Attacks On Hindus & Why India Needs To Be Careful

The silence is deafening. The USA, the self appointed tutor of rights and democracy across the world, has been completely mum on the attacks on minorities in Bangladesh. The latest display of this gag was the dropping of the mention of Bangladesh and atrocities against Hindus from the readout on the Modi-Biden talks. Why is the US avoiding being critical of the situation in Bangladesh under the military-backed caretaker government led by Muhammad Yunus? Experts see India and the US, two strategic allies, not being on the same page on Bangladesh, and suggest that India needs to keep that in mind going ahead.
In fact, when it comes to India's interests in Bangladesh, the US has been in the opposite camp. It tried to prevent the liberation of Bangladesh from Pakistan in 1971, and then sided with political parties that were pro-Pakistan. It has always backed the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), during whose rule anti-India forces found Bangladesh a safe haven. It is also believed that the US worked over the years to undermine the Awami League rule under Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Hasina had both China and India satisfied, she kept the pro-Pakistan (hence ISI backed) elements in her country like the Jamaat under control, elements which used to do mischief in India. She was a fantastic politician but she grew too arrogant. Contrary to the popular misconception it was not a revolution by the students but a bloodless coup by the Army which overthrew her. The Army brass always had good relations with their US counterparts because of frequent interactions during UN duties. The Army pushed the right buttons at the right time: Withdrew support from Hasina, encouraged her to flee (even provided the transport). Bangladesh is in anarchy right now: Hasina's people being hunted down, government officials being made to resign for alleged corruption, professors and VCs being forced off the campuses because they supported the previous regime etc. etc. My bet is that the Army wants this anarchy to continue till the common man gets sick and tired and is ready to welcome the Army with open arms.
