Yup, same here. For me 11/10 movie. Crying everytime I see it. The message just slaps the deepest depths of one's soul and the martial arts slaps your jaw out of the hinges so that You have to collect it from the ground because its just so spectacularly well done. Not mentioning the music which just doubles the impact of this whole movie (Countless hours listening to Wu by Andy Lau, so goooood). Love this movie, definitely all time fav! And I can't stress enough how appreciative I am that You did a review on it and shared Your experience with everyone. AWESOME!

I've watched this movie a few years ago and I'll admit it changed me as a person. The message of accepting your past and letting go is incredibly well portraited in Shaolin, the growth of the main character is beautifully executed. One of my favorite scenes is the one where the wife of the protagonist asks if he is to return home, but he states that Shaolin is his home now. Such passionate feelings for something that changed him and made him a better person is truly amazing. I make sure to watch it once every year, so as not to forget it's beautiful message. Was really surprised to find out this movie is one of Rantoni's favorite! Thanks for the review pepperoni

I love that the villain of the piece weeps over his own actions. It's also important to remember that the movie is a spiritual sequel to Jet Li's Shaolin Temple trilogy, which is a big part of why the real temple still exists at all. Between those films bringing interest to the temple within China, and the Kung Fu TV series in the US bringing international interest to the temple, it became a cultural phenomenon when previously it had been suppressed.

In defense of the insertion of wacky evil foreigners: that final fight scene, where the Chinese characters are having a kung fu fight amongst themselves while foreign artillery is blowing up the literal ground that they're standing on, is a perfect encapsulation of that time period.

It was an amazing movie, and it is very classically Asian with the bitter sweet ending. Was/is veeeeeery common in Chinese, Japanese, etc etc. I feel like they have all been westernized in a way, with happy endings being more common (if not common). Even Japanese and Chinese anime have more and more happy endings, and waaaaay more objective endings with less "fill in hte blank to your imagination". This is the first video of yours i have been suggested in years and damn did i forget how great/funny you are. I sub to so many yters to join the fight, but it's too many for them to suggest them all. haha.

That’s probably because they are different genres though. Happy endings are for less serious/more lighthearted things, or for gratification type genres. Bittersweet things are for more realistic or deep things.

I hope this video spreads the word about this film further because to my knowledge (which may not be saying all that much of any real substance lol) it seems like this movie isn't talked about enough, or at least not enough for my liking. Seriously, I love how it illustrates the process of a man going from a life of violence to one of compassion. I grew up watching old skool traditional kung fu films of the late 70s, 80s and 90s. I kinda stopped watching them around and after the Jet Li era becausei fell out of love with the directing the films were taking. Fight scenes were just fast camera edits which didnt allow you to see the actual skill of the fighters. The last great films I've seen is Fearless and the Ip Man films. Since then I just go back to watching my Golden Harvest, Shaw Brothers and other independent studio film classics. I haven't seen this movie, but will definitely check it out.
