Hi Priya!! I am an incoming ED II first-year who applied as an astrophysics major and I have enjoyed watching your content :) The bit about the 'not so small' small talk made me very excited to join UChicago since I often look for someone to argue over whether the Goddess Athena can be considered a feminist, or whether our modern definition of a feminist would be the same in the Greco-Roman era... well maybe not that specific but somewhere along the lines😅 Thank you so much for the renewed enthusiasm to start this fall😁 Keep up with the great content!

That is so awesome! I completely get that - life's much more fun when you can actually get to the root of interesting questions and explore them in depth. You'll certainly be able to do that at UChicago (and since you're an Astrophysics major who likes ~the arguments~ lol, I'd recommend taking some HIPS classes while you're on campus. It's the history of science and I loved taking those because of the exploration)! Good luck on campus, and thanks so much for keeping up with my content! 😁

Summary UChicago is a great school, and not in a bad way!
@iananderson82882 жыл бұрын
Its perceived as hard. It's a campus with professors just like any other campus. The only major difference is that you'll find more unnecessarily stressed, socially awkward kids at Chicago, and liberal arts departments trashing Booth. As far as diversity, Chicago has a lot of asians. There's even a Booth school in Hong Kong. The college students were very vocal for defunding the police, but recently have been advocating for more safety. Marxist ideas are being perpetuated successfully here.
@adama4791 Жыл бұрын
It’s a campus with professors just like any other campus…so all schools with campuses and professors are of equal rigor? The university is as Hispanic as it is Asian according to the current year admissions profile. UChicago also has centers across the world and not just a singular remote campus in Hong Kong. And I would say UChicago is no more Marxist than any other “elite” school and would actually push back and say it’s less so considering the high percentage of Econ majors and the MO of the Econ department being vehemently anti Marxist.

I've been considering going to uChicago and was just wondering what your act/sat scores were and your grades before you got accepted. I do plan to go to college for astrophysics and want to know if this place could be for me
@TheAlmostAstrophysicist3 жыл бұрын
Hi! I had a 34/36 on my ACT, and my grades were generally good haha but I certainly did have some B's. My schools didn't have a weighted GPA (I went to high school in India) but I have a 4.0 in 9th and 10th grade, and I did the IB program in 11th and 12th grade where I had a predicted of 43/45 which corresponds to like a 3.8! But UChicago is a holistic school so I wouldn't say the reason I got in or anything was due to grades - they really care about the person as a whole and essays.

Thanks for all you videos! Can you tell me the average freshman class sizes you experienced? I would guess that most were over 100 students? Did the freshman cores have TA's?
@TheAlmostAstrophysicist3 жыл бұрын
Hi! Of course! So seminar classes where you have discussions in class (usually humanities, social science, civilization style classes) are 5-20 people. The largest classes were really just intro classes my first year, and I'd say the biggest was about 80 and that class would have 4-5 TAs. I wouldn't say I've had large classes honestly but I was also in physics and specialized in astro towards the end where classes were literally 5-10 people max haha. Core classes will always have more people, and it tends to taper with major classes!

Hey, I have a question. I am thinking of transferring to UChicago but I am nervous about being in a city because that's exactly what I don't want and my current school is in a big city. Do you think UChicago has that big city feel, or is it more constrained to the campus?
@TheAlmostAstrophysicist2 жыл бұрын
Hi! UChicago is in Hyde Park (about a 15 minute uber from downtown) - certainly is a charming neighborhood and doesn't give off the big city feel. It was great because we could go downtown over the weekend for dinner/etc. but never felt like the big city claustrophobia was part of our campus life!

Do you feel the extreme rigor translates over to the graduate school side of things? I've been struggling with the workload of medical school (not so much because I can't handle it intellectually, but more so because I cannot stand the endless rote memorization leading up to boards), but my alternative is the Ph.D. program at Pritzker School of Molecular Engineering (the only engineering school of which you speak), so not sure if that would be any more breath of fresh air than medical school. It sounds like the Ph.D. experience is far more dependent on your individual advisor than the whole university but maybe the initial coursework is too impossible. I would love the environment of the "Socratic debate" you mention - I studied abroad at Oxford and the constant debates people had were the most invigorating thing; I surmise UChicago is the most similar school to that in the US. Nobody has time for debating anything in med school... Thoughts?

Hello, this has been a really helpful video, as I've recently discovered uchicago and immediately fell in love. I had a quick question. I was wondering how much an act score effects your possibility of admission? I am a senior in high school and have a 4.97 GPA and participate in tons of extracurriculars and am a long-term intern in a local university in the department that I want to major in (chemistry) but I only have a 31 on the ACT. Will this tank my chances? I'm considering retaking it, but I'd appreciate your thoughts. Thank you!

UChicago banned me in response to my FOIL request for my own records. They sent me a cease and desist letter threatening me with arrest if I even contacted any other stakeholders, including alumni, faculty nand staff. They never took it up on themselves to inform me of whatever appeal righs exist. They allowed this heinous and unforgivable "mistake" and insult and violation of my fundamental rights to persist to this day, which makes it about eight years. And they provided support and a template for similar violations of my fundamental rights over the past 14 years.

I am going to demand that 1.)Mr. Stamatakos be fired and disbarred. 2.) There be a thorough and rigorous investigation by the Board of Directors, in to which individuals and other public, domestic, foreign and private entities influenced (caused) Mr. Stamatakos to issue this Cease and Desist letter, and the other relevant material information, such as whether anyone considered the scale of the harm and damages imposed on me by these actions. 3.) Chancellor Robert Zimmer, and anyone else who was involved in this, shall be denied the opportunity to resign and instead be fired and themselves banned from the University, and the involved Attorneys and or other Professionals disbarred and delicensed. 4.) I consider this dispute worth millions of dollars in Civil Damages due to similarities to Hatfill v Ashcroft and Limone v US. I will seek punitive damages and I will not be satisfied until I know that the individuals who imposed this illegal harm on me are themselves experiencing a multiple of the harm and losses imposed on me, including imprisonment. 5.) I consider the actions taken against me by Mr. Stamatakos, Robert Zimmer, University of Chicago, and any comparable actions by others, to be Criminal, as in the Federal Conspiracy Against Rights and Deprivation of Rights Under Color of Law, and or their non Federal Equivalents.
