I realize after the fact I barely mention price & value, and that's ultimately because between these specific two it feels like a wash. The CaDA product has better wheel prints and correct offset tire sizes, and it has moderately more pieces, for a lower cost, but it is relatively fragile, has a ton of vastly inferior stickers, and . The LEGO kit has a more matured design that benefits almost everything from the initial build to display enjoyment (see the engine segment) to moving the completed item around to being able to disassemble it & either assemble or reuse the parts without significant additional work (again referring to the sticker situation). I prefer the look of the CaDA personally, but the LEGO model does provide demonstrable, repeatable benefits with its increased cost.

1:50 The color black is a double-edged sword. While a design in black definitely has a gut-punching coolness. At the same time, a lot of the shapes and lines tend to get lost in its blackness, not only the flaws but also some of its beauty. Black is notoriously difficult to photograph properly.

For an adult model that tries to be a good representation of the actual car, I find the LEGO model vastly inferior. The red and blue pins look hideous on an all-black car, and being an adult set I really can't understand how they keep using the "oh it's better for the building experience" excuse for a set that is mostly a display model. LEGO should trust that an adult spending 200 USD on a model is going to differentiate between a pin and an axle. That and the way they handled the tires (no printing, same size between front and back) make the CaDA model a clear winner for me.

Bare minimum, they should make those pins in other colours so those fans can buy them separately and swap them out themselves

I think many AFOL's would happily pay for a "display" or "advanced" bag to be in sets or from the website, which would enable us to switch out the white, tan, yellow, orange, red and blue connectors for bluish greys and black. My biggest issue with the colourful connectors, besides unwanted visibility, is that LEGO now make a lot less connectors in bluish greys and black; thus making harder and harder to acquire them separately.
@joevictor53

This is what I was saying in my comment too. It's fine that they want to have these sets appeal to a wider audience but why can't they make those pieces in more colours that could be bought by collectors online or instore. Just have it as an option so we could buy them along with the set and then swap them out as we go. Like I bought a few pieces in black for 40433 that weren't black in the actual set. As I built it, I was able to substitute them for the ones in the set. Most fans wouldn't care about that but a collector would probably be okay spending a little bit more to have a better looking model.

At the prices that we're paying these days, I would expect them to offer these pieces for free! Especially since they only need to replace the visible pins and not the ones used internally

I'm just happy you're giving more time to Lego competitors. There's so much interesting stuff happening in that field now, in terms of designs, official licenses, and quality, that they really deserve the attention. And there's the elephant in the room: you can now get sets of Lego-like quality often for way less money. A case in point, I built Pantasy's modular bakery recently: about $90 for 2600 parts, with an interesting design, superb interior detailing, all (excellent) prints, a clear manual, and very high-quality bricks. Lego would have charged over twice as much.

I don't know what the sales analysis says about the consumers, and by looking at the profits that Lego make they surely know what they are doing. But, in the debate of colorful connector pieces and accuracy of tires and such, I struggle to imagine the "casual" customer of these products. Smaller and less specific sets, sure. But If you are spending quite a bit more than just pocket money on a construction model set with literally 1000's of pieces depicting a very specific thing from real life, would you not expect both a lengthy and challenging build process and a very display-worthy end result? People don't buy puzzles because they are easy and quick to put together, do they? And although Formula 1 in particular have pushed for, and arguably succeeded in, becoming more mainstream, it's still relatively niche. So its fans will undoubtedly, and evidently, notice when fundamental details such as the size of wheels and tires are off. My point being, sets of this size and complexity with very specific subjects surely must mainly be consumed by an audience that isn't the average person. But like I said, what do I know? Lego have made their decision on colorful connectors, I accept that but agree that Lego should offer the option for more experienced builders. Maybe even if sold as additional extras. But I do not for the life of me understand why, when they made new parts anyway, they didn't make the wheels and tires more accurate. It's a deal-breaker for me.

LEGO releases 1x1 tiles in all colors so they can definitely do the same for the Technic pins and axles. I think that color locking is fine for sets intended for kids but I believe that 18+ display models should focus more on accuracy. An adult who is willing to drop hundreds of dollars on a set will be able to tell the different connectors apart, as long as everything is explained well in the instructions

The Cada kit looks hands down the better build to my eye. Can't judge the build experience other than what you say but so long as you know what to expect going in, it shouldn't be a problem. Thats where such a thorough review is very useful. If kits like this can push lego to improve their product and not get complacent then it's surely a good thing. Nice work Jang.

While the Lego Mercedes set has better quality stickers, as someone who never applies them anyway I feel that the Cada Alfa Romeo set has a distinct advantage in that its more vibrant colour scheme makes it far more presentable without stickers than the plain black Mercedes.

No lie the Cada wheels are nice. if they just sold the tires Separate, I would buy them to replace the ones on the Lego set. and the price difference is ... what we come to expect from Lego but that does not make it good or right. the pricing on building kits is all up in air sometimes it's great other times not so much and recently Lego has had less than stellar pricing compared to the rest of the market. hope you have a good day :)

I think a good option could be to partition out each kind of pin in a separate bag at the start. The Lego set has over 250 black pins and 64 red axles, so it wouldn't be crazy to have a bag of just the pins and then the axles

I totally agree with your opinion on the color choices of the small pin/connector pieces. Nearly all AFOLs would support and appreciate if Lego could just get rid of using the blue/red/orange/yellow etc pins on black, brown, grey or darker color sets, especially for the 18+ sets.

I've heard so much about the tire sizes after the McLaren MP4/4 set came out. I agree with the people who wanted the model to be more accurate. Then I went back and check Lego's track record for the tire sizes in the F1 sets they produced. It seems like none of the formula car sets had different tire sizes front and back. I've checked Technic, the speed champions, the racers and even the Cars sets, none of them had different tire sizes. That is interesting. If I had enough capital, I'ld buy both Lego and Cada and swap the rear tires. I see no wrong in that. And about the pin/axle color situation, I think Lego should consider shades of gray for adult sets. For years I've been swapping colored pins and axles in Technic sets. Latest example is the 10327 Ornithopter. It's not like Lego didn't make black pin with ball joint, they just didn't choose to use it. I don't wanna see all the yellows, and the blues and the reds creeping through the build.

very nice and honest comparison. The rear wheels are of course i miss for the Lego model. And as for color issues: it would be so much better if they only did the blue pins/axle pins in dark bluish grey or some other neutral color. Same for axles, if only in these Adult orientated models. One thing I did notice, which I think you didn't address in this video or the Cada review, is that the rear suspension seems to push itself out, isn't it?

One addition on the colored pieces topic: I get the reason for Lego to color code certain pieces but you did not go into too much details regarding the target customers. So who buys this? Fans of f1 cars or Lego (preferably both) with sufficient purchasing power. What does an f1 fan want from a display model? To display in a great way. And the colors just don't allow for a great display. So the color coding is an OK argument for overall set but not for models where I am paying a certain amount for an IP to actually have it look like the original thing. All in all, I agree that Lego should include the colored parts in matching colors so everyone can make their own decision. It would cost them a few cents. And that might be too much tbh. Great comparison. Liked and agree with all your points. I was only missing my point from above. Keep up your great work as long as you are enjoying it. 😊

I got a few Cobi sets after seeing Jang's reviews and I might give CaDA a try too. Don't like stickers across multiple pieces but I like how good the sets look. I wish Lego would at least make those Technic pin and axel parts in different colours so people who wanted a better looking model could buy them separately and swap them in. They would still be able to make the sets appeal to more casual fans but have that available for people who might be okay spending a bit more to not have bright blue dots all over the model. Also I'd love to see a review of the 1:12 Cobi cars. I'm a big fan of the Creator Expert/Icons vehicles and I'm being tempted by the similar size ones from Cobi

Lego cars sets - though very expensive for what they offer - still not respect tyre width, whether it is in the MP4 sets or this Mercedes technic set. The Lego staff - behaving as a solo leader in the market - seems not to take care of competitors offering better products. I think it is a major strategy mistake. I will pass on the MP4 and the Mercedes. Will they learn and respect their customers one of these days ? Will they go on selling plastic more expensive per kilo than caviar ? Did they forget they nearly close their business 20 years ago ?...

I think a great compromise with the colored pins would be offering packs of black/gray pins for each high-end set through the online Pick a Brick system. Then people who want the higher accuracy could ad it to the cart when purchasing for slightly more money, but with no aditional shipping cost. Then lego could avoid the cost of including extra pieces for every consumer, most of which would not use them.

The Alfa has an nice venturi underside, like the real cars. The Lego set is completely flat. And the tires.... I hope CaDA will sell them separate in the future. I need some for the McLaren and the Mercedes. And decoloring Lego sets is become a kind of challenge for me. It usually costs under $20 to get the pieces that show externally in the right color. BTW, Lego made 4 more F1 cars in 1:8th scale way back in 2004? They even had printed tires on the Williams car. But even back then they used 4 identical wheels, but at least they were wide enough to pass as rear wheels.

The CaDA wins because it's a superior rendition and much better value for the dollar. However, Lego's ethos very much has a place in the hobby and their business model ensures sustainability. I don't think they should compromise to chase the niche who favor CaDA's approach. The two exceptions are scale accurate tires and an extra set of color matched parts. Given the price tag of official Lego sets that's the least they could do.

The Cada model looks brilliant and really calls to me, having been through advanced Technic builds for a long time and I appreciate it's an original design and model of their own. It's actually a lot less costly than the Lego Mercedes set at £100 from one retailer, who is also throwing in the Cada Mazda 787B set that you reviewed recently for free! The only thing I have to think about is fully commiting; while it is a lot less costly than the Lego equivalent, it is also highly unlikely to get discounted as it's not widely sold, whereas for the very most part, the Lego sets are widely available and often heavily discounted. One other key advantage I have, which is highly situational, is I live in the same town as a shop that allows me to trade in Lego sets, even opened and built ones, for either cash or discounts towards other sets in the shop, which is something I cannot do with Cada if I feel it's time to move on from the sets and to make room as they are huge models! Sure I could do it through ebay but it's a lot more hassle and I don't really trust that. It's unfortunately the main reason why I haven't gone for any of the Cada sets, the sharp discounts that usually hit the Lego sets are too hard to resist; Cada's Speed Champions equivalent sets are only £1 less than Lego's sets, or the same price, which isn't enough for me and hard to go for when Lego's sets get like 40% discounts or even a lot more. I do however acknowledge that the Lego sets have their own quirks and flaws the Cada sets don't have. And there are some really cool sets from Cada which look like great value like their construction vehicles and Creator Expert/Icons-level of sports cars.

When you were starting to talk about the random color parts the Lego will use in sets....I was about to pause and comment. Just read an article about that, and it had direct quotes from Lego designers. What you said pretty much lines up with what was written in the article. They mention that with a bag of all one color bricks, that they put a random color in there to make it easier to identify to find what you need. I agree that from an aesthetic aspect, it can be a bit frustrating esp when you're on the Autism Spectrum and/or have OCD. It does make perfect sense why they do it though and admittedly it is helpful. At least with the brick sets, the random color piece is typically buried within the set and you dont see it. In Technic it seems like the pin and connector pieces are always black, blue, and red. I know its intentional and what you said is accurate....I think it does help them keep cost down a hair which at some point played into the decision, yet your comment is accurate per the designers. The Technic sets that are geared (no pun intended) towards adults and display, are usually kept within a only a few colors for the vehicles. The only exceptions Ive seen, since I started collecting at least, is the Lamborghini and the orange McLaren F1..... everything else seems to have been black, white, red, grey, and blue cars. Yes the Cat, John Deere, and a few others deviate from those colors

I don't mind colour coded pieces but why must the chosen colours need to be so ugly? There's black, dark grey, light grey, tan, dark tan, gun metal grey and the main colour of the model. They could definitely make the colour coding way more tasteful. They could also increase the bag numbers. The large 1989 batmobile had bag numbers going up to 24 or something like that. Similar sized Technic sets only go up to bag numbers 4 or 5, so there are many more parts to search through.

I would actually be OK with Lego offering correctly colored replacements for the pieces that are off color. They don't even have to have a bundle - just a list with the piece, it's color and how many I need and the possibility to buy them from Lego. Visually the Cada looks slightly better to me but the mess with clear backed stickers with the Alfa-logo over many parts brings it down a lot. As a personal preference Cada has one dealbreaker: stickers overlapping many parts. I'm not getting either because neither is my favorite kind of car, but the comparison was interesting.

Cada have stepped up their game significantly. It it wasn't for the stickers, this is so much superior to whatever crap Lego churns out these days, like the horrible McLaren and Mercedes F1 sets. It looks great, solidly built and not just an empty shell, it has printed slick tyres and no colour vomit with blue pins and yellow axles. The system brick sidepods in the Cada set really make a difference in the looks department too, while Lego is ideologically avoiding system bricks in its Technic sets and just invents new panels, making its sets look like a jagged mess.

I don't really understand why there would be any fighting or disrespect over these? It'd be a bit like complaining about Cobi over their making model planes that Lego won't touch. 🤔It seems to me that Cada do their own thing and are more about accuracy than ease of build, durability or "fun stuff" like visible moving engine. And that's perfectly fine. If anything it seems that the Cada model needs to be treated very much like a Minichamps or Spark model: be very careful or break something. That's to be expected. Seriously though... Why is it that Lego can't seem to get tyres branding, markings and above all *sizes* right on their large System and Technic models?! They messed up the McLarens MP4/4, MCL35-36ish and now the Mercedes W14E... At least the 2023 Speed Champions has the correct brand and correct covers even if the sizes are off.

Speaking of pins and axle colors. If I’m spending over $200 on a shelf Queen I want the cleanest looking model possible. This scale cars are clearly aimed at adult fans of building blocks. Another thing is the wheel issue. I can understand the same wheel size front and rear on speed champions class cars. Using the same size wheels on the large scale cars is unacceptable. Looking at these two models CADA is a clear winner here. It’s better looking, more accurate scale wise and most of all better bang for the buck. LEGO gets points for ease of build. BTW I do have few CADA sets and quality of bricks and build is just as good as the big L.

The amount of posts I've seen swapping out the colorful pins and axles on the Dune set from first time builders tells me that Lego needs to seriously consider including that extra bag of less colorful parts for advanced builders in these expensive sets. The profit margin at that point can handle another bag of cheap option parts, and there is clearly consumer interest even in the casual market.

Those blue pins from Lego are so ugly! And CaDa can even print the tires. So we have a clear winner! (and don't forget to mention the stupid nose-part on the Mercedes)

Lego has done great job at making their sets easier and easier to build. Unfortunately, in my opinion, they went a little too far. Wrong colors showing (absolutely fine if they're hidden) and a quadrillion building steps with only 1 or 2 pieces at a time. Tthey made them so easy to build that it's almost not fun anymore.

the issue is that Lego for better or for worse are constraining themselves with arbitrary rules. This is not a set for 8 year old. It's a set for AFOLs so they shouldn't have to use off colour pins to dumb down the build. Colour accuracy is more important for the intended target audience. The tires are just laziness and greed. Just look at the other expensive 18+ kits that are still sticker heavy (and they still get the stickers wrong!).

So the CAda one is more fragile, like the real world counterpart the team used in the 2022 season :)

The Lego nose shape looks so wrong to me with that weird bend and dip, F1 cars havent had that in well over a decade... Plus the overall shape of the CaDA is so much nicer. Just wish they weren't these ( sorry Merc fans ) mid and lower level team cars... Why not a bright red Ferrari or papaya McLaren or deep blue Red Bull or british green Aston !?

I generally do not like dark models (black, dark bluish gray, or even the fantastic castle models from Bluebrixx mainly using dark tan for stones) as they are too dark when displayed in normal household lighting conditions. I know that many adult builders constantly complain about "blue pins" but I agree that it is far easier to assembly and even disassemble sets with colored pins. Someone should build "screw caps" with a stem that fits onto pins and hide the original color of the underlying pin ...

Besides the quality of the build/bricks, the AR Sauber looks better, but yeah, it's a AR Sauber, not exactly the most exciting team in F1. In Pirelli roulette 2012 year they managed a few podiums, and probably was their best year after their BMW partnership. However, in the last 10 years their results have been rather unforgetable. Only HAAS would be just as forgetable. I'd be much more interested if it would have been another team (just not HAAS).

I agree with you on the wheels and tire size. However, at least from the video lighting, the Cada tires appear like cheap plastic tires. You demonstrated that they are rubber, but I honestly thought they were plastic before you mentioned it. Im not a racing fan, though I love Speed Champions and have everyone from 2019-present, but even I think Technic's rear wheels/tires look strange due non staggered fitment. Sadly Lego's pricing has escalated drastically in the last 1-2 (too big of a jump in such a short period of time) and I can only imagine the price if the tires had branding.

I’m admittedly not a car guy, so my take is… probably not worth much. That said, I don’t mind the tires and wheels being the same size. If it helps reduce waste or confusion or whatever Lego’s decision was for it, I’m perfectly fine with it. Sure it’s not “right,” but Lego is very often not “right,” practically by design. Lego has their own scale and system to follow first before they can make things lifelike.

Ill be honest, the finding pieces more easily is a lazy excuse for an awful looking model, its just cheaper for lego to produce
@JANGBRiCKS
@JANGBRiCKS 4 ай бұрын
That's simply false though. It costs *more* throughout the production chain to do all the bright colors, for numerous reasons that should be obvious when you consider the production chain.

Never thought there was a big difference in color prices, the more you know! But isn't it cheaper for them to produce certain pieces in only a few colors, rather than having them avaliable in all colors?
@legobrickabrac

@@MartinWangdell Not all parts are available in all colours, the coloured pins and other colour locked parts are made in bulk and year on year, vs other parts that have a production run of the product only. Colour specific pins to sets would have to be produced for each set production and would not just be made in every colour just for the sake of it.

CADA Looks better for this price, yes.....but Lego is Lego. Idont like china stuff. For me as german guy, lego is a europe company, they use licence all time, they invest the money in good social programms , they use green produktions....for me Lego is better as a cheap china company far far away in a political unfree country ....🫣
