I find it amazing that people don’t know how to use a fire extinguisher. Before second grade (before age 7), I knew how to use a fire extinguisher, use a fire blanket, stop/drop/roll if I were on fire, don’t open a closed appliance like an oven if something is burning inside, and how to crawl on the floor and through my bedroom window if my house was on fire. This was covered at school, girl scouts, cub scouts (before girls were integrated; my mom was a den leader), and at home.

No, he probably was scared of the fire or pissed off that he had to be the one to put out the fire or a combination of both. When I had to do it, I tried to pull the pin and it wouldn't release so I got upset and kicked the fire extinguisher. The fire fighter told me that I need anger management. I realized later that the reason why the pin didn't release was because I was holding the handle while trying to pull the pin.

When you think about it... the pressure could build up in the fire extinguisher from the heat of the fire causing it to explode. Thankfully engineers aren't stupid so they designed a rupture disc that will let the pressure out if it gets too high :)

Depends on the cylinder and the regulations they're built to. I would expect that these types have them, but I don't usually work on handhelds. Some of our cylinders that are small enough and have an automatic feature aren't required to have a burst disk.

I love my local firefighters. When my house was struck by lightning several years ago they spent hours with the IR detector tracing all of the wires inside my walls to make sure there was no hidden smoldering. The EMS guys help me with my handicapped wife a couple of times every year. They're tops in my book as well. Y'all stay well and safe and PLEASE bring us more of your awesome content!

I heard this story at a Fire warden training. The security for a crafts market was locking up and doing a final walkthrough when he saw a small fire. He ran for the extinguisher and threw it at it. It didn't work so he got all he could find and kept throwing them. There was like 12 regular size extinguishers in a pile.

I’ve seen them in Europe, too. My uncle was a fire fighter, and he wasn’t allowed to send one in the mail to me, but he sent me a fire blanket that can smother a fire. That said, they look TOTALLY different… I suppose when you’re in a panic, you’re not thinking properly!

I've heard that such glass devices used to exist. Like very very early fire extinguisher tech. like a glass filled with water set above a fire. when it got too hot the material holding the glass melts and the glass falls onto the ground in an attempt to put out the fire. Left alot of glass afterwards though.
