the explanation is on point!!! not overwhelming and explains the whole concept of sketching from start to finish, this is what goes through my mind when sketching too. in conclusion, this is a perfect video to recommend for my beginner peers :DD

The trouble I am having with sketches is the shading. Can't seem to grasp how to shade and if I should be strictly following the reference or just make it up instead i.e. decided on where the light source is approximately and just go with it.

Decide the light and go with it. The reference is mainly controlled by the camera exposure so your judgement will always be better, IMHO.
