They already sort of can, but not to the extent that they could in real life. But you can put the ships in "reverse" and then row by alternating turning left and right with the steering oar. I wish it were possible for multiple people to row when playing co-op. In both directions, of course. Would also make sailing against the wind less annoying.

@@TheStraightestWhitest In fairness to the show Vikings... after... I think Season 2? Or maybe even Season 1, they decided to abandon the historical accuracy, because it had became such a hit show. It was originally only supposed to be a single seasons as I recall! Heck it was even canceled at one point and brought back after protest, provided what I read (on the internet lol) was correct. I highly recommend reading his book the Conversion of Scandinavia to Christianity: Vikings, Merchants, and Missionaries. It does oversimplify certain things at times, but it's a great overview of all the machinations at work surrounding the conversion and the context of pre-Christian Scandinavia that these machinations were operating in. - a MA student in Viking and Medieval Norse Studies who was introduced to the academic field through his book.

That sounds right up my alley. I've always been very interested about the conversion of various pagan groups in northern Europe. Especially with Norse and Celtic peoples. I've always been curious and drawn to paganism despite my Irish-Catholic upbringing. I'm always trying to reconcile the two as they both hold significance for me, despite no longer being a practicing catholic or pagan myself. I think understanding the history better would help a lot. Good luck with your studies!
@amphibeingmcshpongletron5026
@amphibeingmcshpongletron5026 2 жыл бұрын
@Tala K Not according to them lol. idk how you've drawn that conclusion, but the Catholics I knew were very much against any kind of paganism. Sure, there are pagan routes in Celtic Christianity because some pagan beliefs, dates, and iconography were incorporated and modified into the church doctrine in order to better convert the Irish, but Irish Catholics are hardly pagans. That's like saying Christians are essentially Jews, but even more off base.

Thank you for your professional analysis of this game. I have very much enjoyed playing Valheim and hearing you describe the Draugr was wonderful and reminded me of the runestone I came across in Valheim. It's unfortunate that they did not show it to you but your description was insightful as it was reminiscent what the developers had put in the game. The game should not be taken as Viking cannon for sure but it hits all the right notes and really makes you feel like your a Viking. Thank you for sharing it with us. Runestone in Valheim: "Long ages ago, the world of Valheim was home to a race of proud and noble people. They built great towers that touched the clouds and delved deep into the earth for precious metals. But their pride was their undoing. They challenged the very gods and went to war against the Aesir and Vanir, destroying themselves completely. Great Odin leveled their cities and Loki consumed their mines in fire. Mighty Thor broke down their towers and Freya sowed their fields with salt tears. Now they are sunk many hundred of years deep. No song sing of their stories, and the earth has claimed their cities. But pride cannot be killed entirely and the warriors who fought in that final battle will not surrender until their bodies are dust and the dust long gone. They return as Draugr, unholy walkers in ancient armour, creatures of rust and despair. Break them, bury them, let them know they are dead."

I think the point he missed about the Greydwarf is that they are symbol of the "Man VS Nature" stories of old Norse. Killing a Greydwarf and using the wood from its body to build a home is vary similar to Odin killing Ymir and crating Midgard from his remains. The old Norse did not see a tree as useful in of it self, but cutting it down and using that tree is what they where about.

No matter your opinion of the Vikings, they play a major role in history, similar to the Romans and their impact on the world. Its nice to play a viking game for once that includes norse mythology in it as well. If the future DLCs include more norse mythology and accurate depictions of viking armor and weapons, this could go down as one of the greatest Viking games.

3:27. I have heard that the boat heads where Buried with the captain of the ship. So over time it would have rotted and disappeared. (Assuming they were made of wood). That’s just one opinion.

It´s wierd that the serpents head, a massive solid pice of wood thicker than any other plank on the ship would rot away, but still leave the rest of the ship even down to verry small and thin planks behind. werry selective rotting there ey?

@@mr-x7689 He isn't suggesting that the Oseberg Ship ever had a head, but others might've. The reason the Oseberg Ship didn't rot was because it was covered in blue clay, it would've rotted too in normal soil.

I wish they had showed him the longship as well as the Karve, the round shields instead of the Knight Shield which isn't even in the game and Frostner instead of just the Iron Sledge. Also, telling him that the Serpents here aren't Jormungandr, just some smaller sea serpents (Presumably in some way related, however?) I'd like to hear his thoughts on some of the progression too, getting iron from swamps and such, as was accurate irl too. Otherwise, this guy is fantastic, he's just really good to listen to! Other than some nitpicks this video is fantastic

The funny thing about the bird that flies the player into Valheim is that it's a mixture of a bird and woman, specifically has the chin and chest of a woman. Also unfortunate that they didn't show off a wall of the various shield designs, some of the generated wooden huts, the bigger boat,

I believe the Greydwarves are written about in late writer Astrid Lindgrens "Ronja Rövardotter" or Ronja the robbersdaughter. Anyone 30+ in Sweden should know who the greydwarves are, but whether they are a creation of Astrid or if there are actual folklore connected to them, I have no idea. I'm leaning towards she made them up. (Which kinda makes them folklore anyway, lol, She was just that brilliant!)
