So sellers from US selling fake moldavite doesn't do that intentionally unlike sellers from some 3rd world country. Lol
@EarthScienceFun432 жыл бұрын
I answered this in other comments. The other countries are sources for the scam material. The same fake stones (see photos of several listings in the video) are being sold from India, Thailand, China, etc. and re-sold again in the U.S. by other sellers. Same thing happens in Europe and Canada so it isn't just a U.S. thing either. This doesn't make the U.S. sellers any more innocent. Sellers should know their material and it is their responsibility to do research on what they supply. However, knowing that the sellers may also have been scammed gives some context. I've seen this happen a lot in the gem trade, where a fake stone was bought and resold multiple times. Of course the worst scammer in the chain is the person that made the fake stone to begin with. And to keep it from happening again (because people are not likely to always do their research and find the scam right off the bat), it would be best to look at where the fakes are coming from and how that can be stopped. I wish people would quit assuming I'm some sort of nationalist because the fake moldavite is mainly being made in one part of the world. I just want to see scam stones off the market and I couldn't care less about specific countries to be honest. The market is GLOBAL.

For those questioning moldevites spiritual properties...belief is important. People who are skeptical will less likely have an experience. Placebo affect. The first time I held a small piece of moldevite, I felt a burning sensation in my hand. My friend touched my hand and could feel the difference herself. But I believe in the different healing properties of crystals, gems, and stones. We use quartz in watches because of its properties. Its science. Also, moldevite comes into your life when you need it, and will leave when you no longer need it. Its crazy!

One of the craziest things that have ever happened to me was when I found two pieces of moldavite in a box of random stones in a new age store. 2 dollars a peace. I couldn’t believe they were real but at that prize I might as well buy them and study them later. After much testing I realized they were real! One of them even had a bit of sand stuck in it. Now I can’t help but wonder how they ended up with all the “ugly” gems in a discount box.

Excellent, excellent video! You were very fair too, in that sellers were most likely duped, and unfortunately are deciding to pass the buck. I am a lover of gems and crystals for decades, and the moldavite craze has now erupted into taking advantage of many good-intentioned folk devoting their energies into the placebo effect thanks to their confirmation biases. I think many are embarrassed but don’t want to admit they got ripped off, especially if they spent a lot of good earned money on a piece of colored glass.I think if there was better access to testing a moldavite’ s authenticity maybe there would be more consumer awareness. Not everyone can test their stone’s silica content, or dip them into a fluid to test for resolution. I am almost hoping that the craze dies down, so that those who have authentic pieces can sleep well at night haha! Kinda like a genuine diamond vs a lab made one, or a cubic zirconia. There’s nothing wrong with these synthetic stones and I am not judging anyone for wearing them! Just know what you are getting and be upset if you are being charged for a real stone when it is not!

Good catch! Back when I made this video, Starborn had specific pieces photographed (at least for larger rough stones), but I checked just now and I see those bulk listings for jewelry. There are still a few collector's specimens that have photos of a specific stone. It has to do with where the fakes are being produced (i.e. India, Thailand, China). Some of the sellers that got duped were also based in Canada and I'm sure the same thing happens in South America, Europe, etc. However, the countries where the fakes are being manufactured are more responsible for not cracking down on the scammers, no? Fake certificates of authenticity are also more common overseas (Thailand especially), and a lot of the U.S./Canadian sellers I saw with fakes had certificates from Thailand, etc. Sorry if any nation/country bias was conveyed in my video. I don't care where somebody is from in the world, but if they are a scammer they should always be held accountable. I've dealt with a lot of reputable sellers from other countries in the gem/mineral trade as well. But when it comes to moldavite, there isn't a source in China, India, or Thailand and they rarely import it. 90+% of the material from those countries is fake and they are actively working on making better fakes all the time. It's only natural to call out the fakes in the industry where they are most prolific. Farther away regions may not be as familiar with fakes, leading to sellers getting scammed and unknowingly scamming buyers. It is more about regional flow of information and merchandise and not about any one country being treated with higher regard. Sorry for the wordy response. I'm glad you found the video useful.

@@EarthScienceFun43 Lol @patrick worded my similar sentiments while watching this video (which was indeed very useful so thank you for that) How is the Florida seller automatically an innocent victim that got duped and not a real scammer if they're using a stock image you see on other listings? That's like a no-brainer and exactly how other scams like pet scams work. I can understand it's safe to jump to conclusions and bias against countries that make fake moldavite, and yes they should be held accountable. But let's be real, if a US seller is selling so many and using someone else's photo, they're in on the scam and should also be held accountable. I think you may be off a little, isn't it possible to melt some junk moldivite into a larger piece or bead shape? Or you can melt some moldtivite in with glass and make a moldivite percentage and legally call it moldivite?
@EarthScienceFun43 Жыл бұрын
Melting moldavite would cause it to lose its characteristic texture. That texture forms as the tektite flies through the air and cools naturally, and can't be replicated (internal bubbles and lechatelierite inclusions also follow the structure of each tektite, which looks very different from glass under a microscope). Melting would also destroy lechatelierite inclusions, which only form in tektites and fulgurites. You'd just have a piece of glass once it re-solidified.

@EarthScienceFun43 Жыл бұрын
Most of the fake moldavites are made out of glass which would have a similar mohs hardness to real moldavite. I'd recommend going by texture, bubbles, and looking for lechatelierite inclusions to determine the real ones from fakes. While you familiarize yourself with tektites, it might be better to get some indochinite tektites, Darwin glass, or Libyan Desert Glass, which are much cheaper than moldavite and less often faked. The moldavite market is tough to break into, and not all of the fakes are super easy to spot for those just starting out.

Is good to know how to identify fake Moldavite, especially if some scammers have an authentication certificate and how to know if is fake too. I honestly wouldn't bother to protect the seller's name. Buyers won't be able to avoid them if they don't know who the seller is!! And these scammers don't deserve the privilege to be protected, WHY?? They are scammers so no way I would let them get away from this when I could warn others. I would definitely report them to the selling site they're selling on. Shame on them
@EarthScienceFun433 күн бұрын
Good question! My goal was to expose the fake material as a whole, since exposing one or several sellers specifically could go against KZbin's antibullying policy. Even though they are scammers, the site could try to protect them and strike me if the scammers made a false claim on my content. The censored names take that power away. If their names aren't mentioned, the material stays exposed and people will know of the fakes regardless of who sells them. On a side note, many scammers make burner accounts and just make a new account when their content is removed or banned. Big selling sites also usually refuse to take responsibility for what their sellers post. Educating the marketplace seems to be the best option for getting the scams shut down. If they can't make money, they'll eventually quit.

If you have a microscope, real moldavite is jaw droppingly beautiful. It also gets increasingly alien/bizarre looking the more you zoom in. Even if you don't have scientific knowledge of the types of inclusions and whatnot that should be present in genuine moldavite and other tektites, you should easily lose hours plus of your time just staring into the view finder the first couple times you look at it. If you look at a new piece you just bought under a microscope and are not immediately left speechless by how awesome it looks at any magnification level, it's almost certainly a fake...

Thank you so much for sharing this information. Would you now do one for Grandidierite. I bought some on Etsy and it said it was from Madagascar. It’s beautiful, but I’m very suspicious.
@EarthScienceFun432 жыл бұрын
You're welcome! I'm hoping to get back into making videos sometime soon. As for the grandidierite; is it a specimen piece or a faceted stone? Any crystal structure should be helpful in determining if it is real grandidierite. If it was already faceted, gemmy, and low price, I'd be very suspicious. In the case of a faceted stone, a gemologist could identify it and let you know if there are any treatments. Depending on the stone, gemology tools may be needed to tell authenticity for sure (to measure refractive index, etc.). I've seen fairly affordable pieces that are rough specimens (not facet grade) and authentic. The color should be blue-green and pleochroism is usually present. Hopefully this helps out!

@@EarthScienceFun43 Thank you for responding. You have inspired me to drag out my refractive index kit and to look more in-depth into this problem (2010). So the RI of grandidierite is 1.583-1.639 as stated by mine dat. What I came up with was an RI for the faceted stones that I received from "India" not Madagasgar, was a range of 1.68 to 1.76, so I know that glass can go up to 1.7, so I am guessing that my stones are glass. I have a home made kit for specific gravity, so I don't think it would be that accurate. So how do I let Etsy know, if at all. Maybe just leave a review??? Thanks again.

@@wendyshaw6985 You're welcome! Happy to help. Etsy has an option on the listing page near the bottom where you can "Report this item to Etsy". I'd also recommend contacting the buyer to try to get your money back. It's a long shot, but worth a try. You can also leave a 1 star review with what you found out when checking the refractive index to warn other buyers about the scam material. Etsy does have a purchase protection program that covers some items if they are damaged, don't arrive, or aren't as described. Scam material is definitely not as described, so their support should be able to help you get your money back. Best of luck!

I didn't see any specific webpages that are considered to be legit. What about Moldovite Family? Are they legit?
@EarthScienceFun43 Жыл бұрын
I'm not familiar with them personally, so I'd recommend using the tips in the video to see if their stones are legit. There are far too many companies out there for me to review all of them, so I only recommended two in the video that I had done business with in the past. Hopefully this helps out!

Hi, I been looking on Etsy for moldavite necklace at a particular seller and it says hand made. I saw only positive comments and only 2 people they said they manifested what they wanted with the stone. So now I am confused if I should buy it or not?!👀
@EarthScienceFun43 Жыл бұрын
The fakes can still have positive reviews. I'd recommend going by how the stone itself looks and comparing it with the real and fake specimens in the video. Best to be extra careful, as there are still a lot of fakes on the market.

I would only buy from reputable companies like Innervision for example. Etsy is too risky.

Good morning sir. I'm from the Philippines. What is the difference of tektite and moldavtre? I have one e
@EarthScienceFun432 жыл бұрын
Moldavite is a type of tektite. Tektites are impact glass formed from meteorite impacts and there are other types of tektites around the world. Libyan Desert glass, Darwin glass from Tasmania, and Indonesian tektites are other types of tektite. Moldavites are only found in the Czech Republic.

Can you recommended some true good seller at ETSY for Phenacite and Moldavite?
@EarthScienceFun43 Жыл бұрын
My friend Miner X has some phenakite for sale from Mt. Antero, Colorado. Most of it is from the Lantern Pocket (found at 13,700 ft. elevation). Here is a link to his shop: www.etsy.com/shop/AdventuresofMinerX As for moldavite, I don't know of any specific sellers on Etsy, so I'd recommend using the tips in the video to tell the real stones from the fakes. Best of luck!

I can't fully vet a shop without making a purchase and seeing the material in hand and under a scope. There's always some risk when buying moldavite online, and I'd recommend using the tips in the video to have better chances of detecting the fakes. I also get a lot of requests for identification and don't have enough time to review all of them.

Why isn't inner vision crystals on your list of sellers of real moldavite?
@EarthScienceFun43 Жыл бұрын
I simply hadn't done business with them before. The only real moldavite sellers I mentioned were ones that I had personally done business with, so I could confirm the authenticity of stones in-hand. I checked out Inner Vision Crystal's website and it looks legit and professional. Their moldavite listings look great (lechatelierite inclusions visible in facets, rough stones are unique with the right texture and color, etc.). Their prices are also very reasonable for the current market. I advise anyone looking for real moldavite to use the tips in this video to find legit stones, even if the seller is vetted and has a great reputation. There are plenty of legit sellers that I didn't get the chance to mention, simply because I haven't had the chance to buy from them all.

And are fakes mostly man made or are they a look a like rock that isn't the real thing?

I got mine from a crystal shop, doesn’t say where it’s from but it seems real to me. It’s a smaller piece and was around $30. When I look at the real images and compare mine it seems legit. What are the odds though that crystal shops sell fake ones?
@GOLD_FEVER2 жыл бұрын
You know i've noticed in life, for something to be a convincing fake EITHER you have to be super inexperienced in what to look for, OR it has to be REALLY good. The vast majority of the time you can tell, even thru pictures that something is fake... Just something about the feel, the look, the texture and the way it interacts with light really set you off about fake stones... Basically the best way to tell with moldavite is if it has a ton of tiny little craters in it it should be real. (they cannot be super smooth and big in diameter. It is always going to be almost like if some foam got solidified and then a chunk ripped off , it looks like that....) anyways hope that helps.... For what it's worth , usually if you have suspicions about something being fake then it is fake. But when something just FEELS right it tends to be good at least 60% of the time imo.

I wish I knew how to buy a large, decent looking, fake moldavite so I can keep it around to show people. I know someone who has a couple large oval-ish looking moldavites, but I think the color and texture look really fake. She says the seller told her they tumble their moldavite.
