As a geology-trained person I love seeing things from the gemological perspective. That palasitic peridot slice is so cool! Just imagine our solar system ~4.65 billion years ago coalescing under gravity out of a cloud of dust and gas. Lots of iron and silicon born of the destruction of humongous short-lived massive stars. Somehow bowen's reaction series applies to a disc of hot metallic dust that forms a star, our sun, and all the planets. The planets migrate inward, but Saturn keeps Jupiter from getting too close. That's why I love these specimens! Makes one wonder so much about the intersection of physics and astronomy and geology 🥰

My stupid phone changed billion to million 😂 the craziest thing about the formation of the disc of materials that became us is that there were enough atoms of elements other than hydrogen to make planets and us animals. 9 billion years seems like a long time, but it's difficult to comprehend the number of supernovae that led to the elements that make up these rocky planets like Earth 🤣 totally in awe

I love both meteorites and tektites. This video did a good job of explaining the difference and showing some major types of tektites. The libyan desert glass is that beautiful yellowish color that is considerably chunkier than the moldavite. And both are really expensive. I have a couple meteorites but I do not have any libyan dessert glass or moldavite in my collection, and I'm going to have to remedy that situation soon! Thank you both for the presentation, it was excellent and easy to understand!❤

Ever since I learned about lunar meteorites, I've wanted to get my hands on some. I figure its not cheap or easy to come by though! Apparently you can only really get it from the Sahara cause the Antarctic lunar meteorites are all saved for science, and the lack of magnetic signature makes it hard to find in places without good visual contrast. I know it makes perfect logical sense that pieces of the moon would make it to Earth, but its still crazy to think that you can own a piece of the Moon which is of course often visible yet feels so distant, that was blasted into space and crashed back down to Earth.

What's really weird about the Indochinite is that we still don't know what crater produced them. The australasian strewnfield is huge (like 10-30% of earths surface huge) and less than a million years old so there must be an enormous crater somewhere in China or Vietnam that's barely eroded. Also tektites are not pure or even mostly silicon dioxide (some of them not even half) but approximate the composition of the rocks that have been hit by the asteroid. You'd only expect SiO2 in tektites from a continental impact, an impact on oceanic crust or continental overlain with lots of carbonate rocks will produce tektites made from olivine, pyroxene and calcium rich feldspar instead. The latter case is what happened at the end of the cretaceous and it fooled Walter Alvarez into looking for a crater in the ocean for nearly a decade

Probably the rarest Tektite of all is Zhamanshinite. Very little of it is facetable, and thankfully I managed to find 3 that were. They are remarkable and very exotic Gemstones.

I found a Tektite about the size of an apple , beside a small Crater about a metre across . It is black with fine Tektite features. It’s not magnetic , BUT it’s heavy ? ?

I was up in Oregon hunting fossils and on my way I found 100s of what looks like welding slag. But that doesn't make sense to me. Since it was over a 1/4 long on logging road and I collected several chunks

tektites are material from cosmos, they also are meteorites. PEACE.

No they aren't. They are formed form meteorite impact. It is molten earth. Might find trace amount of meteorite in it, but it will be so little you won't see it.
