This is a nice, thoughtful review. One “tell” that was missed is the hand stack - the correct order of the hands, starting from the dial is Hour, GMT, Minute and Seconds. On the fake, it is GMT, Hour, Minutes, Seconds. However, as replicas might contain a cloned Rolex movement, this is not always the case, which is why it is always recommended to have an AD authenticate the watch you are considering purchasing.

I find the GMT Master fakes easier to spot than a ceramic black Sub for example. Even on this good copy I noticed the crown is smaller than the genuine. It disappears behind the crown guards unlike the genuine

Fantastic comparison! Thanks mate. To be honest I’ve come across replicas that don’t have any of the defects you’ve shown which are massive tells. Nowadays the counterfeiters really have their game in tune. Saw an 116710LN and the only obvious tell you’d see without a loupe is that it was in a 126710 case and had a 3286 movement 😅 so you’d have to take the caseback off. Worlds apart from this early-ish copy. That date-wheel O_O' hahaha

2:25 I clearly saw the fake in seconds, because of the lack of AR coating on the Cyclops (you can see the blueish tone on the real/right one). Once I saw that, I searched for further approval and quickly noticed the bezel engravings not being very visible/deep and the GMT hand having a weird green color.

2:32 It looks like the fake one lost a full minute already since it was wound up after taking it from the drawer a short while earlier before making this vid started. also the replica's bezel does not sit on straight, it is higher on the left when viewed from the side (as if visible at 5:22) and the cyclop is more round on the copy, and not as stretched as it is on the real deal (2:38).

Loving it so far, was trying to get the Batman but didn't work out, tried on the old and new Batman in the shop and in the end I think this looked better on my wrist. Hey guy, i really love your videos. Go on like this! It's possible to spot THIS fake in one second. It has the gmt hand first (nearest to the movement), the real one has the hour hand first and than comes the gmt hand... This is because the fakers use a cheap gmt movement. They don't spend the money to fake the original movement or search for a movement, which is built like the rolex... But I heared of somes clones which have it correctly, but i have never seen it. Hand stack is done correctly on newer high grade reps. And the hour hand could move independently just like the real. BUT the tell is that on the real GMT, you could independently move the hour hand to adjust the date backwards whereas on the rep, the date only adjusts forward.

I've heard some asian fake-ers are buying high-end German machines to up the quality of their copies. Who knows, maybe the German milling machines have already been copied :):):) On a recent flight, the guy sitting next to me had an AP Royal Oak. I asked him right up if it was the real thing - he said no. I asked him to let me look closely at it - he obliged. The quality has truly incredible. The perks of being a designer is to be able to spot design defects by eye. I suspected that the left one is fake straight away because of the green paint on the left one are in the lighter shade of green and does not match the green in the GMT-MASTER II text on the dial.

Another thing to look for on the engraved rehaut is, from 1 to 5 the center of the "X" of Rolex should line up perfectly on each hour marker. And from 7 to 11, the center of the "R" of Rolex should line up perfectly. More so than the Crown at 12, in my (limited) experience. PS: the first Red Flag I noticed on the fake, was the way the end link at 12 o'clock fitted to the case... It wasn't "perfect" LOL

I agree the GMT Black is a beautiful watch, got it at an AD in Sept 2018 slightly earlier than u did, a few mths before it was discontinued This fake is actually quite bad, I could tell just by looking as you already pointed out, the bezel is thick is such a weird way that the real GMT have sort of a "round look" and the fake have a "pop out" look. I have seen better fakes that only can tell by fiddling with the movement via the crown. Btw even when the crown is unscrewed, its still water resistance as there is still 1 gasket between the case and stem of the crown.

Excellent review! I also picked up my used 2010 GMT LN about two months ago. What I noticed, however, I could not find the crown etched on the sapphire glass. Does it mean it is fake or it is real but the original glass was replaced by non-genuine or earlier pre-2002 production glass? Kind of confused. Thanks for anyone who responds!

Rolex started with the laser etching around 2001-2003/2004. If your 116710 doesn't have the etching I'd probably get it authenticated or appraised just to be safe.

I bet you it's there and you just can't see it. Had mine since '09, had it serviced last year, never ever EVER noticed it before. Reason is THE ETCHING NOT ON THE SURFACE. It's like it's inside the glass somewhere. Shine an LED at a shallow angle into the glass and look for a very faint ghost in the glass, about the size of the dots on the bezel. Without a loupe, it will look almost like a smudge. With a loupe, at the right angle, it will be clearer.

I tried that route, Got a AAA replica yacht-master a few years back. Looked great at first, but after 4 months one of the hour markers came loose and fell off while I was wearing it. When to check the time and saw the the watch hands jammed by the loose hour marker. Called a local watch maker to see if it was worth trying to fix and he told me that he wouldn't touch the watch unless it was to destroy it. Learned my lesson and saved up for a real Submariner 11460.

Actually, it's pretty easy distinguishing real vs. fake GMT Master II's, isn't it? Considering the fakes outnumber the genuine examples by at least twenty to one, the odds are overwhelming that any GMT Master II you are unsure of (ie you did NOT purchase directly from an AD) is without any equivocation a fake.
