About four years ago, my wife took my Rolex 16613 (bought new in 1998) into a Rolex-certified boutique (in Switzerland) for a service. Hint: this renowned luxury boutique is part of the Rolex foundation. With 10 customers in the boutique, the lady at the counter told my wife that the watch was a fake and that the boutique would not send it in for a service. Needless to say, she really made my wife feel unwelcome...and embarrassed In any event, my wife insisted that a qualified manager come to inspect the watch and both my purchase and insurance paperwork. Of course, he corrected the boutique representative and took the watch in for its service. They charged about $1100, to my recollection. Lesson learned. NEVER again will I be buying another Rolex!

With the average age of Rolex buyers not having the eyesight to see these aspects in their own watch - you have to ask yourself whether these feature add any tangible value other than nostalgic and emotional purposes (which any luxury watch is technically an emotional and obsolete purchase anyway)

I've always wondered how counterfeit companies are allowed to operate in the countries they're made in i.e China, Turkey? China is a different animal when it comes to intellectual property theft. It's really a way of life there and they don't look at it the same way we do. There's an entire underground economy with shopping malls that knowingly sell knock off merchandise. Millions of people from factories, sellers, middlemen and local law enforcement earn a living on the "black market". The genuine factories do complain so once in a while they will conduct raids and arrest a few people but it's really just for show to look like they are taking it seriously. Things will slow down for a bit but then it's back to business until the next raid.

The "double oval" in the laser edged crown was there before in some models - it actually identifies the AR coating used in the crystal or if the crystal isa service crystal. Anyhow - oduble oval means the crystal has AR coating. As Rolex finally started applying that to the sports and divers models too.

Those "organizations" (as you call them) knows very well which are the differences. "We don't want to point to them which are those" is only making to us, ordinary people not to be fulled I have seen with my own eyes, those chinese super clones that are then fine tuned in Turkey. I really love those real vs fake videos, it's a fun challenge to try and guess the real one. I did guess correctly (before the magnification shots) but i wasn't sure, what really made me choose the one on the right was the finishing of the case/bracelet. The real one has an finer/thiner/smoother and better executed brushing and the light reflection is more uniform on all parts. Can't wait for the next one !

I got it correct because the magnification on the fake watch was off. Also the glass edging on the fake was too wide compared to a real Rolex. I wonder if the X line up and if the laser dots on the 6oclock are dots at different depths or if it is etched on top.

My fake Tudor gmt fooled 2 watch repair guys at 2 different locations. Granted they did not open it and look at the movement though. They did size it for me and play with the clasp and gmt function. After I said it was a replica they were surprised and looked at it again.

One factual error here. Rolex do in fact manufacture all their own movements. It's true that historically (in the 1930s), they used to source all their movements from an external supplier called Aegler, (a company that specialized in watch movements), which had a longstanding partnership with Rolex and the status of being Rolex’s exclusive supplier of movements. However Rolex eventually acquired Aegler, which then became part of Rolex’s manufacturing structure. And since then, Rolex has produced its own movements in-house. One exception to this however was in 1988 to 2000, when Rolex used Zenith's "El Primero" movement for one of its models: the Rolex Daytona chronograph. Zenith were renowned for their high-frequency chronograph movements. Rolex did however make significant modifications to it, before installing it in the Daytona, by slowing down its frequency from 36,000 vibrations per hour (vph) to 28,800 vph in order to increase the movement's durability and service interval. Rolex also modified or replaced more than half of the original components in the movement in order to meet their stringent quality standards. This modified movement was called the Rolex Caliber 4030. It was used in the Daytona until around 2000, when Rolex introduced its first fully in-house chronograph movement, the Caliber 4130, which it has used in the Daytona ever since. So, while Rolex did source movements from Zenith for the Daytona model during that period, the majority of Rolex’s other movements, including those for their time-only and date models, were produced in-house. The transition to fully in-house movements across all models was completed when Rolex introduced the Caliber 4130 in the Daytona, marking the end of its reliance on Zenith for movements. Rolex today as a company that's well known for its vertical integration, which means that they control almost every stage of production, including movements, cases, bracelets, and dials. This level of in-house production is rare among watch brands and is one of the reasons why Rolex is so respected in the industry.

The bezel insert on the fake is cleaner and more crisp. Also the red blue transition is better. The latter always looks very blurred and near black on a real Rolex. The best rolex is a real rolex with a fake bezel insert.

You said the counterfeiters have an example of a real watch and presumably they have counterfeit ones. So can’t they already see the parts of the watch you’re concealing? In fact by hiding them, it seems like all you’re doing is giving them a map of areas that you use to conduct authentications.

All you have to do is look at the balance if it isn’t free sprung it’s not a Rolex if it has adjustment levers it’s not a Rolex they can get the outside as close as they want what makes a Rolex a Rolex is what’s under the hood and there are some proprietary things fakes will just never be able to copy. For $1k you’re better off buying a Seiko it will last you a lot longer

I don't get it. Every fake VS real video I see uses Microscopes. I know of no one walking around with a Microscope to authenticate my watch on my wrist or otherwise! They all are spitting hairs. I would take a fake as the way I see them in these vids for 50X less. If it breaks, throw out and just buy another one that is upgraded....

Depends on use case. If a "daily wear"/"never take it off" scenario, about 5 years. It will, of course, go much longer...but then you will probably be into more intense service costs. I serviced my submariner after 15 years of use...the first 5 years was daily use...service costs came to over $1100.
