Personally, i think the best option is to drill holes in the frames. They design them to be very sturdy, so if you drill holes in it, it will lose a little bit of rigidity and a lot of weight! Little note on the sealant thing: it might only be half a pound, but it's half a pound of rotational unsprung mass, this means that it (in theory) has a much greater effect than if you just added or removed that same mass from the frame, even moreso from the rotational part, as this is mass way on the outside of a rather large wheel, though it will only have a real effect when accelerating or decelerating.
@mikeytek
@mikeytek Жыл бұрын
According to some data that is untrue. I personally disagree as I'm from the car world and I view it as a lightweight crank pulley or flywheel but the scientist said otherwise on a bike
@dauf69
@dauf69 Жыл бұрын
@@mikeytekUnsprung mass only matters with suspension kinematics. Rotational mass only matters with smoothing out harmonics of an engine, e.g the flywheel and counterweights. Even on cars, an extra 5kg on each 4 wheels would do the same thing to acceleration and deceleration as an extra 20 kg on the trunk. I regularly see people mixing it up, and it's very easy to do so. The mass in the formulas of both linear momentum and angular momentum are of the same power.
@adrewnebeil1151
@adrewnebeil1151 Жыл бұрын
@@dauf69 Of course in both equations the masses contribute with the same power. But thats the thing: If you have rotational mass, you need BOTH equations! If you have rotational mass, it also needs to be accelerated linearly, thereby contributing twice. Thats why rotational mass has more effect than non-rotational mass. For bike wheels, the outside of the tire moves rotationally at the same speed as the whole bike moves over ground. Thereby, weight at the outside of your wheels just counts exactly twice.
@nelsonglover3963
@nelsonglover3963 Жыл бұрын
@@dauf69not quite sure this is true, if you look at the individual wheel, you have to account for 5kg of rotational inertia, but if you look at the car as a whole you still have to account for the 20kg of linear intertia

i am by no means experienced but a lot of these weight reduction points are i think overstated as each one isnt a lot of weight. The caveat is that the tire sealant thing is probably understated becauase that's weight removed from the outside of the wheels, which dramatically reduces their moment of inertia and makes it way easier to accelerate them
@pesmerg4230
@pesmerg4230 Жыл бұрын
So I was keen to try some of these, but realized I didn't have the necessary tools... $6 for a pipe cutter so I could cut down the seat post, but it turns out there's a minimum length? So I guess I need a new one? That's like $35. Then I decided to try increasing my fork travel... I ripped a few of the o-rings. The bike shop down the street says they can fix it, but it'll be like $80. I plan to buy a shock pump for $40 while I'm there so I can try fiddling with the air pressure stuff. I also gave my bike a wash for the first time, but now that's it's dry the chain and a bunch of other parts turned brown/orange and the chain sounds really like not good. Before washing the bike I tried clipping some of the knobs off my tires, but now they're hissing like crazy and blew bubbles while I was washing it! So all this "free speed" has cost me at least $161 and that's if I don't need new tires!

well one problem, for me it doesn't matter what poss the seat is, my bike tops out at 34 miles an hour, and unfortunately that's thats my gears max, my legs cant spin any faster to get a high RPM, but i do feel a need for an additional gear to get a higher RPM, my goal has been to reach 35 MPH but just when I feel like I can do it, my bike quits increasing at 34 MPH, by then I am pedaling very fast and at the highest gear, and pretty much feeling nothing in my pedals which is why I feel like I need an additional gear to be able to feel more usable thrust is my pedals.

Remove the REAR brakes... No seriously... Removing the rear brakes is going to have a string of effects... You will have to do ALL your braking on the front... You will have to do most of your braking BEFORE a corner You will no longer be able to feather the rear brakes in a corner which will actually help get the frame down (rear brakes sit a bike upright... (This nearly killed me on a motorbike resulting in a hilarious landing on my face from about 8ft straight down). You will have to learn how to actually use the front brakes correctly, feathering, slide recovery, nose standing into corners (ok so that's another motorbike thing... and when I forgot I was on an MTB and did that... my bike became a Metropolis phone box.... nek'minute Superman leaps out... The best era of my riding was when I rode a 1986 Yamaha IT200 that had a drum rear brake that would fail .. fairly as soon as I took it off the trailer... I got to the point where I had to go hard at the corners... Hard on the front (usually lifting the rear off the ground), hard on the throttle to get the rear sliding round, and I was cornering twice as fast as I ever did with rear brakes... Ok no throttle on an MTB (MAN I miss that.. I've jumped over 30ft on that ol IT and possibly double that on the YZ... barely 8ft on a jump park double on the MTB ) When teaching anyone to ride MTB offroad, I get them to ride on a flat gravel road very slowly, and jam on the front brake... then rinse/repeat getting faster and trying to stay on without putting a foot down.. learning how to release the brake and getting the feel for the fromt... I do this BEFORE any other skill... Learn how to STOP before you learn how to go faster !

OK this isn't $0, but I use Mother's CMX ceramic polish on my bike. I've had it 18 months and applied it twice in that time, and all I've had to do is hose it down and dry it off, and it looks good as new every time. If it's raining, it's clean by the time I've ridden home on the road. Spray-on tyre shine has a similar effect on the sidewalls of your tyres (and any other rubber or plastic bits). I ride daily, and this thing is still showroom condition. On some medication this week that makes me a bit OCD, and it's now so clean I didn't ride today for fear of it getting splashed or something ha ha I wish I could post a photo here.
