About that pressure on the palm- I didn’t think to mention it on your video with Shad but adding a palm swell like with brass knuckles would mitigate the pain quite a bit. It wouldn’t negate it completely but brass knuckles are built the way they are because they work better that way.

Hey tyranth, can you expand on this by doing the forearm scythe from the space pirates from the metroid prime series? It removes some of the issues of the wolverine claws, however, now more of the force is placed on the forearm. There's different iterations of it, so you can choose one and go wild!

I think that a claw weapon, while not very effective on the 'classic' design, could be made much more effective with some re-design; Re-shape the left and right blades to start with the outward angle like they have already, but then curve them inward after a really short distance so the return to parallel. That would solve the 'spread' problem on thrusts. Consider the design of a Brass Knuckle- there is a palm brace as a part of the design. Incorporate a similar paddle/platform to the grip so the palm has more geometry to work with. And perhaps place a backing brace as well- draw straight back from either side of the handle and make a leather bracing loop that will go around the back of the arm. (think of the braces some sporting slingshots come with. But for the outside of the arm instead of the inside). This would stabilize slashes, brace the wrist to deliver more force, and probably protect the hand from that discomfort of impacts as the blades are less likely to jam their way backwards in between the fingers. And finally, Put in that comic-book thickness on the blades... At least right at the very beginning. Then quickly taper them down by the time you reach the cutting edge. Give some surface area to your hands to work with so you aren't slapping the webbing of your fingers against the back edge of kitchen knives. Think of them as mushroom-caps to spread the force over. As an added bonus, it would add a little mass to the weapon right at the hand, helping add impact while retaining control by keeping the balance point as close to your knuckles as possible.
@AlbrechtXIX5 ай бұрын
I would like to add to this that if you want to perform more effective slashing motions that hurt less you would want the claws to attach to a back plate that is contoured to the back of the hand with attachments connecting it to the handle behind the pointer and pinky forming a band, this disperses the feedback of the claws across a larger area rather than just the fleshy parts between the knuckles. This serves as an irl translation of the section of the claws we don't see since its embedded in the hand between knuckle bones
@VencentCross5 ай бұрын
idk if anyone has ever told you this but actually Wolverine's claws come from his forearm and up through his hand meaning that its a bit more like a Teko-Kagi where its braced on the arm (in the arm?) to some extent. Although this is inconsistent in practice because often the actor/artist will bend the wrist with the claws out but i think they are MEANT to be coming from the arm.
@darrinrebagliati53655 ай бұрын
They retract to behind the wrist, and when extended the bases come past the wrist so he can use his wrist. I can't remember which movie it was in where it was explained or if it was in a comic in the 80s.

Tyranth, not going to dispute your results with those things, either here or over at Shadiversity. I do want to mention, that the Fox X-Men movies cemented Wolvie's claws as knives in the zeitgeist when in point of fact they are not sharpened knives but just his natural born bone claws coated in adamantium. Sometimes they were knives, but the accurate artists drew them rounded and pointy, not as knives. So, early on in the comics they were mostly stabbers and only really slashed with the pointy ends. The only reason the slashing did damage was because of, well, comic books and Logan was a squat and stout powerhouse. Love the channel and it was great seeing Nate again. Cheers mate, from California.

Have you thought about making a single blade push dagger version? I think a traditional push dagger with its shorter and wider double edged blade that has interreacting lines with your knuckles will still be a better design. But you could solve a fair few issues that way. You could make it more comfortable, more effective, fixing the splaying issues.
@hoodedchildx3 ай бұрын
that style would look good for a costume, i think if you wanted real claw weapons you would want something forearm mounted with a grip to help stabilize
@ragnarphillips19575 ай бұрын
I think if you made it accurately if you had the time obviously, but instead of the three blades attached to a bar how would it do with a palm mold meaning it would be round at the end to where you could hold it with your fingers but you would have support in their palm I think it would distribute the energy throughout the whole mold if it was a palm mold when you struck

Fun little video. Though, the wolverine claws in the movies and in the comics aren't really that thin. And they should sit higher up near the knuckles, so they are in line with that whole area. I always cringe when people use those kinds of claws that don't sit where they should and therefore do not have the same effect when hitting targets, because they flex and slide down, instead of being an extension of the wearer's fists. I wondered where I recognized you from and read it down further in the comments that you worked with Shadiversity. Cool. I will follow your future exploits and see more fun videos.

Great video as usual. I've been thinking about the movies of wolverine and even in origins where his claws were bone they were too long to be coming from inside his hands alone. They must have come from his forearm through his wrist and hand. So they were probably still braced by his forearm. I seem to remember you saying that could be more usable perhaps you should try it and see if it makes any difference.

What about a wolverine gauntlet instead? Make the blades aligned instead of splayed and offload the force from your knuckles and wrist to the forearm. Create a handle to grip olas well.
@andrewthegeek65225 ай бұрын
It occurs to me since wolverines claws are retractable he would best benifit from a boxing stance where he extends the claws while jabing hooking blocking bladed or energy attacks. In the deadpool and wolverine movie the claws from a resting hand bursts through glass. and the proccess seems to take less than an instant. he could cut or slash if the reach would help him but it's already fixed in the direction of your fist. Probably would'nt work here because a the waiting stance would move your blade close to your head and yall can't retract

@lycancowboy19895 ай бұрын
if you are doing this in a real world context i dont think you quite got the style right. i actually think the length is more or less spot on with translation to the real world as the claws would normally sit between his wrist and elbow when retracted and still allow full motion. Pretty sure his claws actually are not entirely contained in his hand when extended though, despite what the marvel show may imply, pretty sure they actually came out and said that that was an anatomical error on their part. For wolverine the claws would be supported not just by his hand but by his wrist and part of his forearm. translated to the real world that might require more of a brace over the forearm, connected to a handle that is in the same orientation you are using now and connected on the sides of the hand, then the claws extended from that handle, all of that to achieve similar biomechanical advantages that the implementation of them in wolverines skeleton would provide. almost, anyway. this would end up being fairly similar to what you have now but i imagine much better leverage and structure for cuts without messing up your hands. as for improvements to make it an actual weapon (if you were concerned about comparing the best variation of the idea fo the weapon rather than strictly exactly as shown) you could do similar to the above but straighten the blades to be aligned with eachother and maybe add a crossbar above the knuckles for extra structure to it. might even be able to lengthen them in this case without much trouble. still not a great real world weapon when compared to others of course though.

Wolverine claws aren't supposed to be held in your hand or be between your knuckles. Jackman has it that way because he's using props, you guys could make an actual gauntlet with the claws in the proper place, on the backside of the hand. Deadpool had a more accurate version of Wolverine claws than your custom made claws in the opening scene of Deadpool and Wolverine. It completely changes the point of leverage when the claws are in the hand as opposed to on the backside of the hand.
