One thing that stood out to me was when you were throwing at the tree, the shield’s rotation was not in your favor. If the tree was instead to your left I believe it wouldn’t bite so much into it, and may have been able to roll off as you intended.

For the long distance throwing test, flipping the shield upside down is what killed your distance. When thrown right side up, the parabolic shape of the disc traps a "cushion" of air underneath it and provides lift. Just like a Frisbee.

One of the lesser focused-on aspects of the Super-Soldier Serum is how it improved Steve's cognitive abilities. He's not just throwing the shield and it returns to him, he does trajectory assessments and throws the shield to bounce in the right angles to return back to him.

Another issue with the rebound not working might be the edge being too soft, adding a bit of a rigid spring steel ring around the inside might allow you to get a proper ricochet and maintain it's shape.

Also keep in mind that bark is probably terrible for this test since it will absorb a lot of energy and is uneven so the angle it will bounce off is unpredictable. On a flat hard surface that would have gone different and probably better.

One of the things that helps Cap quickly remove the shield for throwing and reattaching it on the fly is that his bracer the shield straps to is magnetic. This lets him quickly pull the shield off, throw it, catch it again and slap it back into place without worrying about messing with the straps. Now granted this isn't always the case given I don't think he uses the magnetic gauntlets until Age of Ultron, but it is an option that he uses in the movies. I am loving the idea of the Shadiversity Avengers slowly developing here.

i'm not gonna complain in-universe about how magnets would not give any benefits since there's enough magic, sci-fi etc involved, but at least i'll say for the real world that magnets would never ever give any huge benefits. Either they are too weak to secure the shield, or they are too strong for you to detach it. Just keep in mind, if you need the magnet to withstand a shieldbash with force X, it will take as bare minimum X force to detach it, and that's not considering the fact that the two forces would need to be much further apart. And as soon as you want to use electromagnets, you'll need an automated control mechanism and it would suck up a shitton of electricity, so you'd have to walk around with basically at least a car battery on your back, which is also far from ideal

I think the reason why the rebound throws didn't work are one: You need a very flat angle for it to actually bounce off and riccochet (I can't tell from the video if it was a steeper angle or not). Two: I think you need a harder surface for it to bounce off of, tree bark itself is quite soft. But having a harder surface would probably just ruin the shield within the first few throws. And lastly: It might just be that you simply need more power in the throw. Oh .. and it might help to have a sturdier shield, that doesn't deform on impact and transfers more force into bouncing off, instead of crumpling. But then you'd just be trying to throw a brick of metal .. Anyway, enjoyed the video. I really like seeing these types of "Does X work?" Also, I didn't expect the shield to already bend after being thrown just 3 times
@ScreenTested
@ScreenTested 3 ай бұрын
I did try some steeper and shallow angels to the tree with varying degrees of success the issue is as you can see in the footage the trajectory of the rebound is very random and not consistent then there is where is hits the tree (material it is hitting) ,The force , height etc that also effects the rebound. There was also the fact that you can just hit the target much easier. It terms of the shield bending that is actually a good thing and it can be easily fixed most other shields are made of things like aluminum which would crack, instead of deform so the deforming is a positive Thanks for watching
@kikixchannel
@kikixchannel 3 ай бұрын
@@ScreenTested It is a positive for the shields longevity/ease of repair. It is however counterproductive for it bouncing off, since it absorbs most of the energy to get bent, so that design is simply not conductive to this particular use which Ms_Succubus spoke of.
@ScreenTested
@ScreenTested 3 ай бұрын
Right but bouncing off things I only one of its functions making it excel at one function will have detrimental effects on other functions , so having a shield that can be easily repaired and not just break on impact is far higher on the functionality list 👍🏼
@Banzai_AWOS
@Banzai_AWOS 3 ай бұрын
Honestly, the biggest issue with the shield was it wasn't sturdy enough, had it been something like spring steel it would more than likely been better in both durability and bounciness, although it would likely be much harder to make a spring steel shield of that size. When it comes to the shield bashing, maybe having something like an open box/C shape for the forearm brace instead of a right angle might help a bit, of course that would make it a bit harder to get it ready to throw, it shouldn't make it too impractical.
@KYNF9000
@KYNF9000 3 ай бұрын
The rebound shot might work differently if you tried to rebound off the right side of the tree because the shield was rotating counter-clockwise so when it hits the tree it tries to dig in instead of drive away. Maybe.

I actually think you would have been better off with the original straps. Cap always threw his shield by grabbing it by one of the straps closest to the edge, extending his arm, then throwing it like a discus. It probably would have worked well for you will still letting you use it in melee. Something to keep in mind for mk2.

If you'd ever thrown a frisbee upside down, you'd know they don't fly as far that way either. I think even with the awkwardness imparting force, given the shape of the shield you may have gotten more distance trying to throw it right way up rather than upside down.

I'd really love for you to do a part 2 regarding Captain America's shield, but this time focused on the practicality of using the shield in combination with a firearm. I recently re-watched Shad's first video on this shield, and he referenced a few times when Captain America used handguns (and even an M16 once) in combination with his shield. But that's left me really wanting to know how effective the "shield and gun" fighting technique would be in real life.

First of all, I love your videos. Your content generation actually leaves me satisfied because of your dedication to scientific experimentation. I am, and have been the premier shieldsman for my larp group since 2003. I've blocked thousands of spears with 27 inch rounded shields exactly like the one you are using. I've also shield checked so many people that is a reflex on anyone who thinks they're a berserker. That said, bashing and blocking require a strap at the back of the shield or some sort of stabilization brace. You can always face the buckle inwards and uncinch very quickly before a throw if that was your intention. One strap on the back third of the piece will give you all the utility for bashes you require. Your other handle is great. The fact that you mentioned wood as a kinetic absorber also impressed me. Even in larp, with foam frontals, we sometimes use a plywood backing to help soften blows from 6 foot polearms. It helps, but you can't throw it more than 10 feet. For the rebound throws, maybe a springsteel? You lose a lot of energy on that tree, but wood absorbs kinetic energy. Maybe in the shield throw 2.0 video a year from now...use a more rebounding surface? Anyways, I'm no expert, just wanted to share some input from exprience and to show my support for this AWESOME channel. You have the same feel as old school game theory, I hope you understand how deep of a compliment that is.

You are pretty accurate at throwing strange weapons like the Mjolnir or this shield. I think that the problem with the rebound throw was that the shield was too soft, you'd need something more rigid to make it rebound well, also, you tried to make a glancing hit on the tree instead of a solid impact from the other side that made it rebound with strength. A really entertainning video, those throws agains the dummy (I still call it Dahs) were beautiful.

Sitting at 11:00 and it looks to me like it could use a reinforcing band of metal (maybe about a half inch to 2 cm wide worth of aluminum) around the inside of the entire circumference. That should help with stability and give the edge a bit more structure for punching and bouncing.

Looking at the test, I think it would be worth a retest after some modifications. 1) Re-enforce the rim. 2) Cross brace the shield, likely with honeycomb drilled aluminum plate. 3) Design a quick detach system with a base that remains strapped to your arm. 4) possibly vacuum molding carbon fiber or carbon fiber/aluminum composite to the back of the shield in place of wood to further re-enforce it. Hope this helps.

i'm just throwing this out there, in the hopes you'd see this: i'd like for you to see how viable sword and shield would be against *monsters. to be precise, if you were stuck using that combo, and could optimize it for such a task. i say this because thanks to Disney's Sleeping Beauty, i grew up with the concept of slaying dragons with sword and shield - and other monsters, by proxy. i was thinking you'd find the right type of blade (Roman spatha, Viking sword, 1831 French infantry briquet... to name 3) and shield (Kite shield, Heater shield, etc.), find the right measurements, test them out - *if making them is even possible* - and then discuss it with Shad. i hope that just the discussion of it and the extrapolations would be done, let alone everything else... but i'm already hoping for too much. *not from D&D, The Witcher, or any other media; i'm talking Earth folklore (like the medieval depictions of dragons).

Suggestions to keep the shield from deforming: -Just as adding a layer of fiberglass to a board of wood makes the wood 14x stronger, adding a continuous layer of aramid fabric secured with impact resistant resin will prevent deformation -Spot welding as opposed to bolts and holes (takes less time to do and is less intrusive) -Temper the edge or add a tempered edge, like the reinforcement of a wood shield Alternatively: -Get a titanium shield (that material is wacky)

I believe if the sheild could manage the damage and vibration better it would perform more efficent. As others stated the throwing technique and rebounding is a matter of practice and angles. Spin and speed can in theory work, but that is a skill and time thing most folks do not have. As shields are not thrown that often.

So I genuinely think that the rebound throw could have worked better if you had your palm facing up with your right hand grabbing the handle and you threw it / swung it from your left side to your right side to release because the centripetal force or spin of the shield would have rolled off the tree more as it bounced vs how it was being thrown in the video. Kind of like how a basketball will start to roll in the direction of a bounce as it goes across the court. It might sound like an awkward comparison but in parkour they land and shoulder roll because it distributes out the landing force making it so that it's 65% less lethal on the body except in this case scenario of throwing the shield the way I mentioned it would be kind of like redirecting that momentum rather than trying to instantly stop it. Whereas the way it was being thrown at the tree in the video it was kind of spinning into the tree which is like driving a car forwards and then instantly trying to throw it in reverse. It was causing more friction on impact which really hurts the vector quantity.

The core mistake in bouncing it off of a tree was the side you picked. throwing right arm, hit it on the right side -- that's how you maintain the aim and the natural spin. much like you would in billiards: you rarely ever apply the opposite spin to the natural motion. throwing with right arm but hitting on the left of the tree is counterintuitive, if you don't open some angle (which would mean position like 2 steps to the left). that's the main reason you struggled hitting the trunk and bouncing it properly.

A strap that retracts when not used to reduce drag...tool steel also...like the sword.

The tree is too soft for the ricochet test. It looked to me that if you test it with a solid surface it may likely work. A beefy steel pole would be best, like the ones used to block cars from passing. Also, of course, the shield should be solid too.

So, as much as I love Shad, one day, we know Tyranth will move on and outgrow Shadiersity, which is a natural, good thing, and Shad would agree I think. I will be so sad when he leaves the shad team whenever that is, but I'm excited to see the journey.
