@13:10 I know exactly what you mean. When you´re knee deep in IPAs and stouts and your palate expects that flavour, having a lager, even though it might be the bees knees, it just wont do it justice since you´re not "there". I love me some nice west coast IPAs but the lagers and pilsners (and the belgians) is where it´s at, at the moment for my own palate. Cheers Simon!

The wife and I like to enjoy our own beer tastings at home. I hide the bottles behind a large book and she chooses her fav without knowing what’s what. Good fun and a nice way to taste various beers. It’s easy to get a bit fuzzy when doing a tasting, especially if not have enough food beforehand. Very fun regardless. Cheers.

I've done Munich Ocktoberfest twice and both times I've stuck to the Hofbrau hall. Stunning beer and great atmosphere in there (for obvious reasons), but you do need to drink tactically if you want to make it to the evening. You need to be in by around 12:30pm to get a drinking spot. You must go at least once in your life.

You have to go, it really is incredible and an experience and every year I seem to go on the rollercoasters or drop towers after quite a few Mass (litres). This is the best beer review channel on KZbin IMO. I haven't watched your content in years when I went to st Omer in the north of France. The st Omer beer draught is very nice and they drink a lot of the Belgian beer in the north of France too and I watched your channel for the Belgian beer and drank a lot of them too. For me, way to strong, totally pissed after 3 large Belgians. Your story about your brother in law reminded me of how my older brother introduced me to German Weiss beer, dunkels. When you drink good beer as the German people do, the carlsberg, Heineken, bud etc are pure piss. I've never drank since and that was a long time ago. Now, you introduced me to beer I didn't know about on your channel like Schneider beer, Tap5. Stefan's pale ale etc and they are great beer. I can't even get them here where I live in Ireland and we are in the EU ????? This was an enjoyable video. I watched it drinking a bottle of bayreuther hell and einsiedler hell. I'm now going to open a lovely bottle of Schneider's bayrisch hell. All the best and cymrig abú 👍

Great marathon review Simon! I had this case last year and it was very good. However I have decided that Oktoberfest beer is too strong for my taste. It took until the end of Christmas for me to finish them, drinking about one bottle a week. But I still enjoyed the quality and flavour! The Hacker Pschorr was my favourite because it wasn't just a stronger version of the brewer's lager or wheat beer like some of the others. As to whether you should call yourself an expert, to me you are, first and foremost, a fellow beer lover. But I also rely on you to suggest new beers to try. The vast majority of the time you are right so if that's not a measure of know how and expertise, what is?

The Rothaus Marzen is also amazing, closer in style to something like Augustina Edelstoff, or Hacker-Pschoor Gold, than an Oktoberfest special, but top stuff never the less. I love you did this side by side! if I did it myself I'd be trashed, so I'm happy to see you suffer for your art. For me the Hofbrau is the best. I think it gets the balance between the malt and the citrus hops the best, while not being as sweet as the others. Then the Ayinger, then the Hacker-Pshoor, lowenbrau, and paulaner equally good. Spaten and Erdinger the weakest. Great review! I hope to see more flights like this in the future. All the Trappists maybe? Or Maybe all the big 6 German helles side by side? Or all the Big German Lagers side by side, warstiener, krombacher, becks, bittburger, vletins, jever ect.

These lagers are brewed in the month of March (Märzen). Lagers are bottom-fermented under refrigeration and need to "Lager" (ferment) for a longer period of time. Ales are top-fermented at a higher temperature which means they can be cranked out fairly quickly. It takes a bit more skill and patience to make a lager IMHO.

Typically June/July would be too late for these. The name of most of these, Marzen, gives a clue as to when they’re brewed; March. Traditionally this was because of Bavarian law that only allowed beer to be brewed between September and April. Festbier has a higher alcohol content so that it would last over the summer months and still be good for Oktoberfest.

Pleased to see you with a Nognö-glass for the Löwenbräu! In my experience Nognö is one of Norway's best breweries, possible alongside 7 fjell. :) The british drinking culture where a really TASTY 4% beer is considered strong, is admirable! P.S: I don't like to consider myself an expert either but I have tried more varieties of beer than anyone I know personally. You've most likely tried 4-6 times more beers than I have and I think you can use the term as long as you consider EVERY mouth of beer you swallow. There are so many great beer halls and Biergärten in Munich I didn't really feel like I was missing out by not going during Oktoberfest. Honestly I'm not sure I'd like it. Too crowded, too hard to get a good spot, long queues for the toilets... I also tend to prefer the regular lagers from HB, Löwenbräu etc. as they're lighter and not as worty/bready or boozy.
