Leffe used to be my all time favourite beer. It was my first choice when I was feeling a bit flush, but last time I drank it, I decided never to buy it again. I assumed it was me that had changed, but now I realise its the Leffe that's gone down hill. Can't wait to try the aldi version. Thanks for the review.

I reckon a lot of people may be suspicious of the strangely named beers in Aldi and Lidl and veer away towards the usual British brewed stuff, Stella, Budweisser, St Miguel, et al. Yet as you say, this is brewed by the Palm Brewery in Belgium and they have an incredibly long history of brewing excellent beer. So this has to be good and yet another one to look out for on Aldi's shelves I do believe that it's maybe the British alcohol taxing system now which is why our beers, even from abroad, are getting weaker. Or maybe they think we will just sup anything that has a beer label on it and that may be true of a lot of people.
@stewy62
@stewy62 Ай бұрын
I’ve posted before on the subject of excise duty but here is the short version. Alcoholic drinks, including beer, have always been taxed based on their alcohol content, the previous UK tax regime for beer being £19.08 per alcohol % per hectolitre (last revised 13th March 2017). So the higher the ABV the higher the duty i.e the tax incentive to reduce ABV has always been there. It’s not a new thing ! The new rates effective since 1st August 2023 have introduced banding but the vast majority of beers fall within the 3.5-8.4 % band anyway, which was set at £21.01 per alcohol % per hectolitre (£19.08 if on draught, note this was the same as the old rate although I think the latest budget reduced the draught rate by a penny a pint ?). Blame the UK brewers not the Government.
@davidmorgan6896

I appreciate that they do, but why would anyone buy foreign sounding beers brewed in the UK. We have one if the strongest, most diverse beer cultures in the world - second only to Belgium IMHO. In my local area we have Three Tuns brewery, the oldest in the country, and Salopian; both of which are superb. The only reasons I can think of for drinking the beers you mention are marketing and a desire to get drunk when you don't actually like the taste of beer. As @stewy62 says, we've always operated a sliding scale of beer duty; it hasn't changed. There is no new reason for breweries to drop the ABV of their beers other than profiteering and, perhaps, as a sop to the idea of responsible drinking. Personally, I'd rather have three pints of something tasty than for of bland dishwater. And I know ethanol has no taste, but beers above 6% do tend to taste more.

What I find with Aldi is that they introduce a product eg the san marco Spanish lager, crunchy peanut butter and probably this life too. I always enjoyed Leffe (Blonde and Brune), when Blonde went from 6.6 to 6.0 % I still enjoyed it although it wasn’t quite as good. I went for a while without drinking any and in the meantime got COVID for the first time a few months ago which has affected my taste buds. I’ve recently had three 500ml Leffe Blonde bottles and it was disappointing although I thought your 5/10 was a bit mean. I’m drinking my first can of St.Pierre as I ramble on, it’s definitely a nicer more interesting drink. I’ll have to buy a bottle of Leffe Brune which I don’t think has been changed for the UK to see if it tastes the same before I had COVID.

Replying to myself, currently drinking a bottle of Leffe Brune bought at Tesco. That’s better ! Brewed in Belgium 🇧🇪 like it should be. Hopefully Brune continues to be less popular than Blonde and that way they won’t be tempted to brew it in the UK for the UK market ! I won’t be drinking Blonde again unless I visit the Continent as the UK stuff has nothing going for it. Upon reflection, Simons 5/10 was probably right !

It's basically diluted now. I feel like I should have a little memorial service as I've lost a best friend! I actually tried Saint Pierre a few weeks ago and really enjoyed it but it was 2 quid a can so I've given it a miss since. I believe it's just dropped in price though I could be wrong. UK Leffe isn't the same anymore. The real stuff is still the same: 6.6%, in 500ml cans (under 2 euro), 33cl cans, 30cl bottles and so on. If I was from the UK, I'd stop buying the sheit versions produced in the UK.

@@robv.8676 Good shout. I'm in Finland, and we still get the real thing sold in our supermarkets, at 6.6% ABV

I had Leffe 5 years ago and thought it was great. Sad to hear they ruined it.😢

I'm glad you've started calling them 'fake', but isn't it fairer to say 'UK fake' versus 'Aldi fake'?

Aldi fake Leffe vs Leffe fake Leffe. Remember buying a pint of Leffe about 15yrs ago in a bar under London bridge, one of the most memorable beers I've ever drunk, great beer, great location, reasonable price (for London) great company. Drank it ever since until the supply dried up and it was replaced by the watered down version, that was me out. Replaced by Fullers London porter of all things......

Haven't seen cork and cage Leffe, for a few years. The new Leffe is OK at best, the Aldi rip off is one to miss for me.

8 mins until you finally took a sip! I would have polished off both glasses and come to my conclusion by then 🤨

Leffe used to be great, the same thing that happened to Jaipur and Punk IPA has happened to it too. Watered down, lower abv and dreadful. At Pierre is overly sweet and terrible too. Wouldn’t drink either of them.

Stella original is shite. The unfiltered version is very nice. Leffe Blonde and Brune were absolutely second to none but now, personally feeling, both are thinner in mouth-feel and lesser in flavours! I will look out for the Aldi versions from now on 🤩

So the Leffe was cheaper than the 'cheap rip-off' Aldi beer?!

"Reassuringly expensive" was the advert slogan. It's still expensive, but tastes crap now.

The way I see it, they’re both fake but the Aldi beer is a much better fake than the UK Leffe. In Belgium - bars, shops and supermarkets - Leffe is just as it’s always been - gorgeous.

Leffe like other in Bev Budweiser products sold In Britain is brewed here because of the alcohol duties any beer over 5% gets hammered with tax so the worlds big 3 breweries brew everything in Blighty recently Japan Breweries owned Peroni went from 5.1% ABV to 5% but the price stayed the same the only decent beers sold in Britain today are either imported of Craft Breed
