Leffe used to be my all time favourite beer. It was my first choice when I was feeling a bit flush, but last time I drank it, I decided never to buy it again. I reckon a lot of people may be suspicious of the strangely named beers in Aldi and Lidl and veer away towards the usual British brewed stuff, Stella, Budweisser, St Miguel, et al. Yet as you say, this is brewed by the Palm Brewery in Belgium and they have an incredibly long history of brewing excellent beer. So this has to be good and yet another one to look out for on Aldi's shelves I do believe that it's maybe the British alcohol taxing system now which is why our beers, even from abroad, are getting weaker. Or maybe they think we will just sup anything that has a beer label on it and that may be true of a lot of people.
@stewy62Ай бұрын
I’ve posted before on the subject of excise duty but here is the short version. Alcoholic drinks, including beer, have always been taxed based on their alcohol content, the previous UK tax regime for beer being £19.08 per alcohol % per hectolitre (last revised 13th March 2017). So the higher the ABV the higher the duty i.e the tax incentive to reduce ABV has always been there. It’s not a new thing ! The new rates effective since 1st August 2023 have introduced banding but the vast majority of beers fall within the 3.5-8.4 % band anyway, which was set at £21.01 per alcohol % per hectolitre (£19.08 if on draught, note this was the same as the old rate although I think the latest budget reduced the draught rate by a penny a pint ?). Blame the UK brewers not the Government.
@davidmorgan689624 күн бұрын
I appreciate that they do, but why would anyone buy foreign sounding beers brewed in the UK. We have one if the strongest, most diverse beer cultures in the world - second only to Belgium IMHO. In my local area we have Three Tuns brewery, the oldest in the country, and Salopian; both of which are superb. The only reasons I can think of for drinking the beers you mention are marketing and a desire to get drunk when you don't actually like the taste of beer. As @stewy62 says, we've always operated a sliding scale of beer duty; it hasn't changed. There is no new reason for breweries to drop the ABV of their beers other than profiteering and, perhaps, as a sop to the idea of responsible drinking. Personally, I'd rather have three pints of something tasty than for of bland dishwater. And I know ethanol has no taste, but beers above 6% do tend to taste more.

I always enjoyed Leffe (Blonde and Brune), when Blonde went from 6.6 to 6.0 % I still enjoyed it although it wasn’t quite as good. I went for a while without drinking any and in the meantime got COVID for the first time a few months ago which has affected my taste buds. I’ve recently had three 500ml Leffe Blonde bottles and it was disappointing although I thought your 5/10 was a bit mean. I’m drinking my first can of St.Pierre as I ramble on, it’s definitely a nicer more interesting drink. I’ll have to buy a bottle of Leffe Brune which I don’t think has been changed for the UK to see if it tastes the same before I had COVID.

Replying to myself, currently drinking a bottle of Leffe Brune bought at Tesco. That’s better ! Brewed in Belgium 🇧🇪 like it should be.
