Crazy, too, cause I remember this channel when it had so few subscribers. Greg (Greg's Beer Reviews) and Simon here both have an infectious enthusiasm about beer. I quite enjoy European beers, even while enjoying my local IPAs and beers (Mexican style lagers have taken over, lately, so that's what local brewers are doing). Someday, I'd like to do a real ale tour of the UK

I’m a lager/ pilsner German beer snob. I order from Germany. Pay a fortune. BUT. I still cannot beat the taste of krombacher !! I’ve tried ALL the pils in Germany. Koclsch. Helles etcetcetc and krombacher is still my fav beer. I even have a German friend who can’t believe I drink it. He says ‘it’s ok but there is so many better pils ‘. But for me and my tastes. There isn’t. Now. It gives me an awful awful hangover were my stomach is churning for 10 hours the next day so I only ever limit myself to 3 660s a week. You are right, it's not the same. In the eighties and nineties I used to pass the old Gatzweiler brewery on the west bank of the Rhine just before the Rheinkniebrücke and it was decent enough in town, at least straight from a small wooden barrel. It's all gone now, I'm not sure but I think the stuff in traditional style barrels is brewed by Zum Schlüssel in the old town but the bottled stuff, is brewed in the Mönchengladbach by the mega brewery owned by the Oettinger brewery. The Carlsberg link sounds feasable, as that and Tuborg are brewed there too. Don't quote me on any of this though!

I recently bought a six pack Warsteiner lagers and I love this pilsener! It is a bit more hoppy than the Dutch pilseners I usually drink in the summer, but at the same time a bit sweeter as well. To me this lager is almost like a blond beer and that for a lager price. I am not complaining. That said, when served cold I like any lager/pilsener. It is at room temperature they really show their strengths and weaknesses. But I only drink beers at room temperature in the fall and winter (with room temperature I mean between 17 and 20 degrees celsius) and that excludes pilsener/lagers

My two "go to" German beers! Warsteiner is indeed a pilsner. I also buy Bitburger. These big brands are very quaffable and haven't fallen foul (yet!) of the UK brewed "fake foreign beer" syndrome! I don't prefer one over the other and always get both on the three for five offer at Tesco. Having a Bitburger tonight though. What you say about Warsteiner is concerning. I will check this out when I next have one out of my beer cupboard.

Peter, if it makes you feel any better, the US also has that "fake foreign beer" syndrome that goes on. I imagine it should be worse here, but I don't know. We've already lost many of our craft breweries to big companies that changed the product line, often shelving the good beers for marketable beers

Great review...I just tried them both together and I always thought that I preferred Krombacher as it was the first beer that I ever was drunk on when 14 on a German exchange in Siegen, less than a mile from the Krombacher factory. We were 14 and buying Stiefels. Unsurprisingly we lost our England VS Germany football match 3-0. And today I actually preferred the Warsteiner. But I always thought that I preferred the Krombacher. This bottle tastes a bit weak and metallic. The Warsteiner seemed to have a lot more of a bitter hop punch. I think each bottle can be slightly variable...like often beer at the beginning of a barrel in a pub is better than the end. Great review that you can change from what you thought before the review started ; ) Radeberger is the best though.

Last time I had Warsteiner probably about 6 months ago, didn't enjoy it as I usually do. Thought maybe just growing out of it, in one way plus side if it is a change to the beer I know the German stuff will be as good as ever. So tempted to pick up Frankenheim Alt from beers of europe Simon but last I checked they were short dated. Remember being at a gig in Dusseldorf and Warsteiner and Frankenheim Atl were both on sale so each time I would buy a beer a switch between the two. Whenever you can try some good Dusseldorf Alt. Not sure if Frankenheim is well rated though I likes it but the likes of Schumacher and Füchschen is superb.
@johnp8131
@johnp8131 Жыл бұрын
Frankenheim was always a sweeter, maltier Altbier, although I can't remember drinking it since they moved the brewery to Neuss and closed the old brewery tap, and that was years ago, I believe they've had a tie with Warsteiner for years. Do you remember "Düssel alt" aswell, they must be gone for nearly 30 years now, but they used to have a tie with Königsbacher of Koblenz? And when I lived over there many of my local bars around Viersen mostly had Krombacher and Diebels Alt together. Love Füchschen and Schumacher but we always end up back at the Uerige. When my German mates drive over here for beer holidays, they will always bring over a couple of 10 or 20 ltr barrels of Uerige or Schumacher to drink and a 5 ltr tin or two of Füchschen for me to keep.

Krombacher is off for me. I tried it last summer here and had to give it away. Pretty rare for me when it comes to cheap thirst quenchers when having a beer whilst knocking over chores around the garden. It tasted "processed" for lack of a better phrase. Must be the "hop extract" they brew it with.

Warsteiner is my favourite UK Supermarket lager, drank it for a long time (even told you to review it years ago 😂). Carlsberg started importing it a while ago and the quality did dip for a bit but I can assure you it’s back to its best, it may be your palate after drinking the Krombacher which as you said it’s a bitter beer. Out of curiosity, I went down and picked up x3 different 4 pack cans of Krombacher, Bitburger & Warsteiner here in Ireland. Each a €8 a 4 pack. I started off with a can of Bitburger, excellent pilsner. Found it a bit too drinkable. Warsteiner, checked the can, nothing to do with Carlsberg/Marstons on the can. It had "Product of Germany" written on it though. The Krombacher, same "Product of Germany" on the can and tasted wonderful. I can honestly say, Warsteiner was the best of the bunch. Bitburger & Krombacher would be the same in quality for me, but second to Warsteiner. The Warsteiner was just the most refreshing & regret not just buying x3 4-packs of that instead. But, I did find a few weeks ago, I bought Warsteiner in a bottle and it did have that musty taste, like it was left out or brewed in the UK water. It was also 10 months old, the can I'm current enjoying, being only 3 months old. I tend to buy all my beer these days in cans, they have a faster restock time and never come in contact with the sun in those boxes they're sold in.

Is the Krombacher good again? They've changed the recepie a few years ago, dropped ABV and it didn't taste that good anymore.

What do you think of my idea of having 2 substantially different beers on the go at the same time? The mouthfuls of beer get increasingly less tasty as they go down and the mouth gets used to the taste. Switch between beers for every sup.

Currently yes, direct from their independent breweries near Dortmund . The Multinationals haven't as yet got their dirty claws into them. Warsteiner is brewed under licence in Spain by Mahou in relatively small quantities, but it shouldn't be exported from Spain?

There is something massively different to the warstiner on the initial taste. I have no idea what it is as I'm not an expert. But there is something overpowering on the 2 seconds in taste that's so off-putting to me. There's something overwhelming that overpowers all other tastes coming through. I had a bottle of krombacher earlier and then tried a war. I actually poured the second half of the pint out and went back to the krom

Someone in the comment section suggested that the stuff we get in the UK in 660ml bottles of both krombacher and warstiener are slightly different than the stuff they drink in Germany in 500ml bottles. I'm planning on doing a side by side and ill let you know the results. The German Warstiener bottles doesn't list "hop extract" as an ingredient so that's an immediate difference.
@karlheinzer2402
@karlheinzer2402 Жыл бұрын
If there's a difference then me as a German I can tell you I like the one sold in England. If there's a difference then the German one is more full body. Which can taste overpowering. I'm thinking it's the same though. It's a beer that some day you like it very much and other days you just enjoy it.
@mymic208

@@karlheinzer2402 I find "hop extract" to have kind of a metallic sharpness to it, so my educated guess is it will be that, but I have no idea, ill see when I open them. Both krombachers list "hop extract" however.

It was forces guys stationed in Germany who popularised Warsteiner in the UK wasn't it? While your average Brit was piling boxes of Carling into their trolleys the guys who'd returned home would be grabbing these. I preferred DAB.

"Wobbly" or even Dortmunder Union Export were always the "go to" crates in the NAAFI families shop in the eighties and nineties. Wasn't keen on DAB but we didn't see it as often near the Dutch border? Ironically, I found it cheaper to buy a crate in a German "Drink Market" (Tax paid) than I did getting it supposedly tax free in the Naffi or Sgt's Mess!

Thank you, you've answered some questions. It used to be a "go to" beer back in the 80's and 90's when I lived near 'Gladbach. Not so good as I remembered it when we go back, as my German Father-in-law always had them or König Pilsener. Both have gone "Down hill" in recent years, as have many others?

I used to be the president of a local over 30s/Old Boys football team and the custom was that one player had to bring a case of beer with them for the end of Tuesday training. If you dared to bring anything but Warsteiner, there would be lots of sulking and moaning. Even though were up North, that seemed to be the de facto pilsener.

I would have to agree that Krombacher is better balanced and thus the better beer. I would check the production date of the Warsteiner in this video. It has a distinctive malt profile that really overpowers the hops after 6 months or so. Krombacher, Warsteiner, Radeberger, and Wernesgruner are all great values if found fresh.

Interesting but can be difficult, as some supemarkets change the brewers of their beers pretty regularly and just keep the same labelling etc.....and it seems to be a bit of a secret who currently brews it, therefore the tastes can change more often than not? One that hasn't changed for a while is Morrisons premium lager, brewed by Cains brewery in Liverpool. A bit sweetish for some but personally I find it quite pleasant.

Last week I went to Morrisons and bought a bottle each of Warsteiner, Krombacher and Fustenberg. I wanted to compare them to the Lowenbrau I had recently ordered (see my post and replies below). They were all nice beers, as you'd expect but I thought the Warsteiner came out on top for me, by quite a distance. Oddly, it had an unusual but pleasant flavour. However, it didn't trump Lowenbrau, in my estimation.
@Searly255
@Searly255 Жыл бұрын
Lowenbrau is brewed for Germans by Germans, its not really a big international beer (in supermarkets anyway) were as Warsteiner, and Krombacher are. I definitely feel like this makes a difference with how they make it taste. A German market will want there beer purer than a market brought up on carling and bud. I mean don't forget Budweiser was made by a German for Americans.

In Germany we call both Warsteiner and Krombacher "TV beers" meaning they may hit the average consumers' taste but both are far away from any 8 or 9, sorry...instead of try Schlenkerla Rauchbier made in Bamberg or Franziskaner Weissbier from Munich. And many other less-known smaller brands. Greets, Paul

Went down Morrisons again yesterday, all Krombacher bottles are 500ml now, no 650ml on sale. Same price 4 for £6.60. I'd rather pay the same money for the smaller bottles as long as they keep the same recipe though, and don't do a Rheinbacher balls up.

OK Simon, Have you tried Kaltenberg Pils? If you haven't, don't bother as it was a fine beer when it was 6% ABV, it's now a ghost of what it once was at only 4.8%. Is this what they call progress? By the way, Simon, it's pronounced Varsteiner, in my local they call it War Starter.
