In the Battle of Ourique, it was made knight the best Templar Knight of all times: Gualdim Pais, who after the battle departed to the Holly Land as Templar, where he stood 5 years having fought dozens of battles with an amazing capacity to fight and to won the battles, some with unbelievable heroism and achieving fantastic victories, some battles were fought untill the last man. When he returned to Portugal, he created the todays most known Templar city in Europe, Tomar!

I'm grateful for the content you put out and any history you could provide us on Portugal's activity in the Crusades are my favourites. Portugal's role seems to be overlooked, understandably, due to the main crusade in the east - but it's gratifying to see my country's awesome history, pardon my bias!

I have been waiting for more videos about the Portuguese reconquista in a while. A video about the life of Afonso I of Portugal is due, since he is one of the most important figures in the reconquista along with ferdinand iii of castille and james the conqueror of aragon. Love your videos by the way.

In truth no one knows exactly where the batle took place. Several historians still doubt that it was so far south. But the importance of the battle is unequivocal. Our flag still carries the five mourish kings defeated in that battle

I love this channel. I get so sick of all the bullshit spouted by even historical books and documentairies. I'm Dutch myself and I was watching a documentary called "The History of the Netherlands" and it very briefly touches on the Crusades to give some historical context (and indeed some Dutch noblemen went crusading). The documentary literally said that the crusaders roasted and ate muslim children. Like not in the case of reduced to cannibalism because of starvasion but they made it out as to say they were so evil they came there and just started devouring babies. It's ridiculous.

The propaganda machine is strong. Don't let your kids get brainwashed in the schools or by the TV. The state is no longer capable of providing quality education. The rich 1% have highjacked it for their own ends. Rich 1% want worker slaves, and they will do it through propaganda and brainwashing.

I can tell you that some years later during the conquest of Lisbon by Portuguese King Afonso I, he got help from a big crusader army coming from north Europe by sea to Palestine, they stop at city of Porto to get supplies for the rest of the voyage, many were convinced by the local bishop to participate in the siege of Lisbon, "if you want to kill Muslims you can do that right here in South Europe". The crusader forces were organized in three groups, Normands (English), Flemish (Dutch), and from several German cities.

I watch all your vids great work m8,these story's i like best few agains many. Watching your vids made me much more aware of the real danger that europe had been in for hundreds of years. Without the crusades europe would have been islamic and, there would not have been an industrial revolution so we would stil be riding donkeys across dirt roads :).. Too bad that our politicians dont understand that the mindset of muslims today has not changed since the creation of islam. And i think if they keep letting these"refugees"in all that sacrifice and heroism was for nothing,and were going to pulled back into the dark ages again.

Spain is iberian empire that the castillians anexed to their kingdom (some muscle forced to)! So portugal was already full forged kingdom and it was portugal ,the crucial army reenforce asked by the castille king ,that won the last spanish battle against the moors and then they forged they're kingndom! we were part of the beguining of the christian iberia, so it was on that time that the lands were divided and given to great noble knights war lords to protect them against the counter attacks of the moors and vikings ( im talking about the year 800 - 900 a.d.). Yes there was a main leader at the time, the descendent of the first visigothic kings, knowed has the castille kingdom that gave as a county , plus his daughters hand , to henry of burgundy! This noble war knight was very ambicious and started something that his son (afonso the conqueror) our first king finished and acomplished - the portvcale kingdom ! It is a little bit complex, i just put some overall points of info. But if you re interested just google it deeper! You wont regret because it is a quite thrilling story! :) Sorry for the type errors!

There were many kingdoms in the Iberian peninsula, Spain didn't exist yet. The county of Portugal arose from one of these kingdoms (Leon), from which Galicia was under. Portugal formed into a kingdom from there. Meanwhile the other main kingdoms in the peninsula at that point were Castile and Aragon which themselves later united by marriage to start the unification process of Spain. They begun to join the other kingdoms too by conquest or alliance and slowly shaped into their own until eventually one Kingdom of Spain was created in 1492-early 1500's. Portugal existed as a kingdom since 1128.
@simaozinho37
@simaozinho37 5 жыл бұрын
Spain is the unification of many kingdoms, basically Spain was formed when Castille forced the other kingdoms like Aragon,Leon,Navarre etc... to join their kingdom and make spain and they also sent word to Portugal but Portugal didn´t want to be annexed to Castille like the other kingdoms basically Portugal was the only that resisted Castille while the others were forced to submit, that´s why you see nowadays Catalonia and Basque independence movements Spain is an ilusion nobody wanted to be united with castille, Galicia is in northwestern part of Spain and they have very similar to Portugal due to the fact that Northern Portugal and Galicia used to be a Celtic kingdom called Galleaci or Calleaci, so their customs are very similar even the language.

Portugal fought to split from Spain in the 1600s, because Spain was envolved in many wars like the 30 year war, the Dutch war of independence, and others. Spain slso start to raise taxes and recruit Portuguese people to those wars. Plus the Portuguese trade in Asia become a target of British and Dutch forces because we were on Spanish side. That union got no advantage to Portugal, only more taxes, losing of men in wars in Europe and lose of trade in Asia.
