@Carlos Saraiva I suppose a widower might still become a Templar, in which case it would not have been impossible for even a very holy Templar to have had children. I knew a priest like that, who was ordained at age 60 when his wife was dead and all his children were already grown -- and he was one of the best priests I have ever known.

Once again fenomenal. We the Portuguese have 500 years of Templar history. Not just the common knowledge of 200 years all over Europe. The great Atlantic explorations had the same purpose, just a different name! We sailed has The Order of Christ! The Holy Red Cross in the sails are a testament of that! Portugal sailed with them way before other nation and we still use it in our banners! Find a book by Jonh Dos Passos... " A History of conquest"! Plain and simple 400 pages written in English that will allow You guys to understand 5 century's of Portuguese Templar History. Just a note...O'PORTO is the crib city, as well as Guimarães and Braga, of our Nation. Port'dU'Graal! The D is silent. Means The Port of THE GRAAL! PORTUGAL! Por Santiago or St.James was our banner! Then after Lisboa...also for St.George's. The first Bishop was from England! Read about it. You might find some Templar Gems. Thanks for Your great work mates.

Afonso I almost single handedly guaranteed Portugal's independence as a Kingdom. He fought against his mother's forces, alone, in order to keep the lands his father had conquered from being vassalized by his uncle, the King of Castille and Leon. Then he spent his entire life on the line, for Portugal wasn't guaranteed as an independent Kingdom until it's official recognition by the Pope, which came only SIX YEARS before Afonso died. This basically means that every Iberian Christian Kingdom had a plausible justification for declaring war on him. And not only that, he also had to battle the Moors that threatened to undo the Reconquista on his southern borders. It's no exaggeration to say that the Portugal we know today, as a nation with it's own culture and language, and not as some Spanish province, exists because of him. No one expected much from that kid, son of a French crusader, whose mom tried to screw over by manipulating his lands back into her family's domain, yet as soon as he was 14 he was knighted and proceeded to wage war against his mother's forces. Afonso I The Conqueror was a beast, and he deserves his nickname as much as William does.
@jaimepaiva88477 жыл бұрын
it's only the cognomen, and this is much more important for us natives than for the target of this video which is international. cognomens are used mainly as a mnemonic to remember which king did what, and since in this case he only talks about Afonso I, "The Conqueror" or "O Conquistador", the cognomen is pretty much redundant IMHO.

Honor was important to knights. Making your opponent look strong and respectable is making you more respectable in defeating them. Beating scum is nothing but killing animals. No honor but sometimes necessary. That is why historians paint the defeated enemy in an honorable light. That and smart leaders respect the abilities of their opponents or risk being beat by their own bravado.

In regard to the bravery of the Muslims, two thoughts: One, I'm reminded of the Imperial Guard fighting to the last man at Waterloo, and have read accounts of other, similar stands against hopeless odds. Modern military thought is aware of this as small unit cohesion, where the members fight as much or more because of their emotional bonds and pride of unit as love of country, etc. Two, there is the aspect of making a virtue of necessity, as they were quite unsure of their treatment if they surrendered.
