The ball isn't kept by the spectators as a souvenir. It has to be returned. Cricket balls lose their hardness/shine during an innings which has an enormous effect on how much it bounces, swings or spins. Sometimes the ball will get hit out of the park and is lost. The umpires have a collection of balls that have been used for around the same number of overs as the lost ball. They try to find a ball that is approximately in the same condition as the lost one. In Test matches, the old ball is/can be replaced after a designated number of overs (80), when the captain of the bowling side so chooses. This is called 'taking the new ball' and can often result in a batsman getting out due to the extra bounce or swing. Conversely the ball travels faster off the bat as it isn't soft and which can result in more runs being scored! There are a huge number of factors, atmospheric conditions, the pitch wearing, deteriorating/breaking up, the footmarks caused by the bowlers and so on, that mean the playing conditions are constantly changing. This is what makes cricket great, as players have to adapt to the conditions as well as the state of play/the game and the pressure to perform.

In cricket the fans have to return the ball. The wear and tear on the ball plays a big part in the game.
@RealFansSports Жыл бұрын
Interesting. Does it play a part with grip for the pitchers?
@demeraragirl Жыл бұрын
@RealFansSports grip and also the newer harder ball is usually bowled by a fast bowler. It hits the pitch and the bat harder and faster,so could catch the batsman unawares. On the batting side ,you want your best batsmen facing the new ball,because harder balls goes faster to the boundary. On the other hand when the ball is older and has some wear and tear, the slower ,spin and seam bowlers get a better time of it and they also depend on the wear of the pitch to know where to direct the ball so it hits perfectly on any rut or break they might have detected. That is why players are not allowed to run right down the middle of the pitch . Some would deliberately pretend they forget when the umpire isn't looking, especially if they have already batted. Cricket is a game of brains and tricks that most who don't know it will miss. The umpires always have a box of used balls ,so in case the ball goes out the ground. They would chose one that mat have been used for the same amount of overs/or condition as the ball that was lost or as close to it as possible.

@@RealFansSportsthe fielding team very carefully prepare the ball as the innings go on. They want one side of the ball shining and other side rough. Don't forget, wear and shine on the ball is a big part of the game. It's the same ball - The crowd have to give the ball back, unlike baseball. If the ball is lost on a roof or goes in the river, they bring out a selection of old replacement used balls and pick one that is in a similar state..

8:21 it's not 377 to 1... It's *for* one, as 1 batter down. You have a team of 11 but they have to bat as a pair, so each team has 10 wickets in hand at the start of an innings. This appears to be a first innings knock.

If you are in the crowd and the ball comes to you, you don't keep it. It has to go back into play because the exact condition of the ball is a vital aspect of the game. If a ball gets damaged so it becomes unplayable a box of balls will be brought out and both captains must agree on a replacement ball that is as close as possible to the wear state of the damaged ball.

6:30 Yeah 4 is where the ball has bounced before the boundary rope somehow. 6 is hitting the boundary rope or going over. A fielder can accidentally parry a ball over the rope and that would be 6 (assuming it didn't bounce before then). You see that a little bit on hits that are very close to going for 6 anyway and they don't have room to catch the ball without touching the rope themselves. If the ball touched that triangle pad before touching the grass that is a 6 so yeah that's what they were checking.
