As an engine builder over 35 years, I have the same Lisle cam bearing tool with steels shafts (Old one back in the day is my old Durabond) I see you lube them too! I even use the same Lucas semi-synthetic assembly lube! I now do the same with the ring gaps. (same or looser on 2nd) I do usually run the 2nd ring +.004 more than the top with the Napier type newer ring design. Good video for anyone wanting to know the tricks of engine building!

I use the cam sprocket as a handle. Works great and allows me to 'hover' the camshaft all the way in. No clanking sounds.

I use a piston to get the ring straight in the cylinder but I'm sure the ring squaring tool is a better thing to use

Interesting. I just install the cam bearings while the block is on a table, which allows me to install the back 3 from the front and the front 2 from the back using the cone to center, plus you get to finish off with the cam plug before it goes on the stand.

That is exactly how I do it too. Installing cam bearings and filing rings are two of my least favorite things to do😂.
@yarrdayarrdayarrda

@@mikemaccracken3112 Small and big Chevys are usually trouble free, it's the bloody LA/B/RB/HEMI's that guarantee you'll be doing some bearing surgery to get the cam to spin freely.

GM engines you have to check cam bearings and make sure the cam fits. My machine shop insists on me to bring the cam. Too often haveing to 'scrape' the bearings for the cam to fit Chevs, Holden 6 &8. .While I have done more GM engines than others Fords from the factory are generally far better machined. Wheras some Chryslers too are very poorly machined. Jap stuff is generally fairly good. To me cam always goes in first. Ring gaps,, hone, rings and bearings engines. The new rings have a bigger gap than the old worn out ones.I have always worked on 4 thou per inch of bore, A bit more [18] for the second ring. These days they come new with 6 thou plus. And new pistons are so far down the hole,,, A 9-1 OEM engine ends up at 7.5-1

Am I the only one that likes to put the front two cam bearings in before (or take it off) it goes on the stand so that I can use the longer distance and cone on the tool to keep them straight?
@Zone6G
@Zone6G 2 жыл бұрын
I'm surprised you lube the bore before you put the bearing in. I'd think that would raise the risk of spinning a cam bearing. I guess the press fit is enough.
