Definitely a true engine builder. Camshaft goes in FIRST!! On a babbitt bearing engine, putting the cam in first allows you to support it on both sides so as you slide it in, so you don’t knick the bearings. Finally…

Many years ago I was at a road race and had a very strange gearbox failure. Fortunately I had all the parts I needed to fix it except for this little cam actuator that had a bearing seized on it. I had to get that thing off to reuse the cam. Fortunately a friend's dad lived right next to the track and came out to hang and help. He took one look at it and said "I'll be back in 30 minutes." He took it home where he had literally just finished setting up his new lathe. Sure enough, 30 minutes later he was back with a custom made puller that took that thing off slicker than snot and a giant thermos full of fresh coffee. That puller is still in my tool box to this day. Only gets used maybe once a decade. The bearing only gets seized if something goes horribly wrong but everyone else just replaces the cam when this happens. Saves me like 80 bucks every time I use it.

Question: Needle bearings on the cam journals... So you block the oil passages... I get that, cause you'd never build oil pressure in the engine if you didn't... But do those bearings get enough oil, just from the slosh? Would they work in a dry sump situation? How about the pressure exerted on the needle roller points? I suppose that would depend on the lifter spring pressure at max lift? Would that not change as RPM changes? Sorry for all the questions... But I'm working through getting the whole needle bearing deal, as that's how all 2 stroke cranks are done... No oil pressure, but caged roller bearings, which have a higher pressure on the race than even a little needle bearing.
