Simple answer as to why the treasure was never found, the captain went back and dug it up and it was long gone before any of the people went searching for it.

He mistook the message of those few coins he found. Instead of taking it as a sign that the treasure was there and he was near, the actual message was "the treasure was here, but now it is gone, and those coins were the left overs, fallen and forgotten".

My thought, exactly! A few coins are what would be left if someone dug up treasure, and whatever was holding it had deteriorated, forcing them to transfer it to other containers.

I heard a Different tale ... A Newfoundland man by the last name ..Keating ..learned of the Treasure from a Pirate member of the crew.. before the Pirate Died he gave the Location to Keating ..who then Partnered with another man to hire a ship to sail to the Island ..when they got to the Island they instructed the crew to stay onboard as Keating and his companion went ashore ..some hours later Keating returned alone to the ship with a large sack of unknown Origin ...Keating claimed that his Partner ..had fallen in a stream ..and cracked his Skull and died ..so he had to leave him behind ...Keating returned to Newfoundland and lived out his life as a very Rich man with a lot of Silver ..he died later in life with the location of the Island ..the Creator of Treasure Island was apparently in a slump in regards to writing ...so was hanging out in a sailors pub drinking ..overheard sailors stories and tales of the incident ..and then concocted the famous story of ..Treasure Island....Keating did not disclose the location of the island for his whole life..but it was said that the amount of silver he returned with was only a fraction of the treasure ..but enough to provide for him for the rest of his life...

More of Stevenson's Treasure Island was true than you realize. It was indeed a work of fiction but, as in all great fiction, it is based on factual information and circumstances. Both fact and fantasy are woven within the tale. That why this great book remains a beloved classic to this day.

A pirate ship was way more democratic then most people understand. All, I mean ALL bounty was split to all crew members. Only one, the Wydah Galley Treasure has been found. The myth, born from the novel Treasure Island was not as true as many want to believe anymore then vikings wore horns on their helmets which was an invitation of Richard Wagner for his opera to make them look more fearsome.

Very interesting story. Every tale like Oak, Island, Treasure Island and other reported buried treasure locations are fascinating but at the same time, its highly likely that these places had these treasures removed within months or years of being buried by any one of the pirates on the ships involved or their informed friends or family. The captain would likely have also made contingency plans to retrieve the treasure without his crew ever knowing. Greed would have removed buried treasures in short order. Most of the treasures are long gone.. The only few treasures that may not yet have been found are those that still exist because the ships crews were lost to the sea with all hands lost or the crew were captured and hanged without the treasures location being exposed.

If a British warship showed up commanded by an admiral Palaca and started blowing up the island chances are they had knowledge of a treasure on the island too. They would have not wasted their time and resources and showed up on a rumor. It was game over for Gisler at that point because they had the ability to find it better than he did. The proof lies in the message 'the bird is gone', most likely a British sailor wrote that message. No one would ever find out because that was a sovereign island of Costa Rica and the British would have crossed into their territory and taken a treasure of another country. The sailors would have strict orders not to say anything. The bird flew away and Gisler was screwed at that point.
