The Sahara is the biggest desert on earth ... it takes its name from the Arab word for "emptiness". In the dead heart of that emptiness there's a place called the Tenere. The Tenere takes its name from the Tuareg word for "nothing". A nothing the size of France in the middle of an emptiness the size of the United States. It's no wonder the locals call this place "The Land Of Fear”. David Adams retraces the trade routes of the people who call this stove-hot corner of the planet home.
From the ancient civilizations of years past to the dawn of the Space Race, every week we'll be bringing you award-winning documentaries featuring some of the world's best historians. Subscribe so you don't miss out.

Ancient customs and kind people taking you into their country and showing you the way and you bring this this adventure into our lives as a gift. You are so kind and respectful. SubhanAllah! So beautiful! Thank you for taking me along! When my daughter was in Cairo for her 3rd year of college, we took a holiday foray to the Siwa Oasis. I was completely awestruck at our encounter with the Sahara; i will never forget it. Apart from the feeling of being lost in the midst of the great ocean of sand, there was the absence of sound, except for the whisper of the wind over the dunes. Our guides/hosts spread a great wool rug and prepared sweet, hot mint tea as we sat watching & wondering how they'd manage to return us safely to our inn with the sun seeming to melt like a pat of butter over the tops of the dunes.

If you could record and publish those songs (starting at 18:46) I believe it would win a Grammy. At the least, I, and many others would buy it.

Living in a country neighboring Niger Republic, I am really fascinated by your documentary. We call the touaregs Buzaye and we do business with them before. Now things have changed a little bit.
