We get the bends cause we breath the air at depth so the nitrogen is compressed when it's in the blood stream seals hold their breath. Free divers can go as deep as they can with no fear of the bends

Personally I think she was loaded heavy and the load shifted doe to the large waves causing her to list and the rogue waves broke her back. It was just a matter of time before the waves tore her in half. There was probably some small leaks when it happened.
