The "Link" feature is very handy for chopping wild transients on acoustic guitar without changing the volume of the track (like most other limiters do).

There's also a requirement for tracks to be -1dB true peak limited. It's a good practice anyway because when you encode it in AAC or MP3 it will be louder than -1dB in peaks bcs of the way lossy encoding works.

im really developing a deep appreciation for reaper's native plugins. like i love beautiful interfaces as much as the next guy, but a lot of times plugins are just too gimmicky with their UI and make it actively harder to focus on the actual content of the plugin. it even feels like dishonest marketing sometimes. "our plugins look beautiful so that means they're more professional". reaper takes a very no nonsense approach to plugin design, and only give you the things you need, while also going really easy on your cpu usage. its just amazing. I've been using a really clunky overdesigned limiter for a while now and it was always a bit frustrating to use, but im definitely switching to this. i love the simplicity and the readout functionality. most companies charge a lot of money when their plugin has that kind of useful visual information. ESPECIALLY limiters or compressors, because they're capitalizing off of beginners who are confused by them and overly rely on visual help to understand what they're doing.

I’m finding that I’m learning more from using reapers’s plug ins. It like I’m actually seeing and learning what I’m doing to the music in a raw way, apposed to turning a fancy knob that I really don’t know exactly what I’m doing but changing the sound.

even though I love learning from K.G., i'm starting to watch these videos just for the music content.
@rocketman3743 жыл бұрын
There is definitely a point in going over -14. In that case, it's not loudness we're going for, but reduced dynamic range and increased intensity. If you mastered a tech death metal track, for instance, to -14 it would sound weak and sparse. Music like that actually needs that crushed feeling. But I agree, choosing anything over -14 simply for the sake of loudness is dumb, given that a large majority of music is consumed on normalized streaming platforms these days.

You're not limiting to reach an lufs. You're limiting for the sound that you get from cutting off peaks and the forward push you get in many pop situations. Sometimes a track needs -7lufs, sometimes a track needs -9lufs, sometimes a track needs -12lufs. It all depends on what the track requires to achieve that sound that makes sense with the type of song. Often, when mastering as a mastering engineer, I receive tracks that are also not mixed perfectly and I have to make a decision as to how the limiter is going to impact the track, if it needs to be pushed hard, or if it would be a mistake. There's no issue with being turned down on streaming services. Think about it, you're raising by another 6db, and you're being turned down by that amount, essentially, or close to. There's a reason why most commercial tracks still sound loud, powerful, and perfectly fine on -9lufs. Most A list songs are mastered around there(of course, genre dependent, but yes). It's because it doesn't matter if spotify turns you down. You don't suddenly get so much softer than a -14. Keep in mind, you raised the track up another 6db. So it's all relative, to a point. Best rule you can apply, and that should be taught to everyone, is that streaming platform lufs DOES NOT MATTER and people should STOP trying to do their tracks to fit a particular streaming service. Many people in the community also have the incorrect idea that spotify is compressing your track(they think its not just being turned down). They don't get it's essentially just turning down by as much as you turned it up past the -14lufs point. Which usually equals about the same place, minus some transients(depending on if you manage to find a way to keep the perception of some of them, but thats another story all together.

If you can't find this plug in under "add fx"... re-scan for vsts!! You have to go into preferences, scroll down to "plugins" and select "vsts" ...then re-scan!!! This might seem obvious to those of you who already knew this, but I've never had to "re-scan" for any internal reaper plugins... I don't even know where reaper has to look for ITS OWN plugins, but they're not in any of my folders for third party plugins!! This is why it made no sense to me to have to scan or re-scan, because I don't even have a "reaper" plugins path in my path list... but when I re-scanned there was REALIMIT!!!! Hope this saves some people some time!!! (If you have "scan for plugins on start up" enabled, then you don't have go into preferences... It'll just be there next time your restart reaper).

@@mjklein I'm curious about your statement if you would share your thoughts on it, I only set mine to -0.3 for rendering a 320kbps MP3 and when I import the file back into a new project it's still at -0.3 on playback. I have heard that reduced sample rates in MP3 cause a higher chance of overs and would set the limiter lower, but I personally never use those lower rates. I will set it for -0.5 when out putting a wav for SoundCloud though.
