Given the full experience is totally free, I'm more than willing to pay the ridiculous amount of 70 (€/$) to support the developers. I've paid 60 for version 5.xx and 6.xx for years, including the free updates nearly every week. I've tried crippled versions of others, and found no reason whatsoever to use anything but Reaper. As a major bonus, we get the excellent tutorials on all the features of Reaper by Kenny Gioia, straight from the website of Reaper. No need to search Google.

Kind of funny, one reason I chose Reaper is I didn’t want to pay a premium for GBs of plug-ins I didn’t need, figuring I’d slowly build a library of specific ones I wanted. So far, I’ve only used the Reaper plugins after learning how to use them from watching Kenny and a few free ones to experiment with. The only plug-ins I’ve bought are a couple of instruments (MT Drum Kit and a contrabass). For MIDI guitar my favorite ended up being the built in sampler plug-in with samples I recorded of my guitar).

Finally bought Reaper the other day after a lot of use and a lottt of Kenny's videos- thanks for all the excellent lessons! I probably wouldn't have bought it if I hadn't learned how to use it so well. The large selection of well-designed plugins really helps you learn how to put the pieces together and focus your time, rather than bouncing around buying and trying out plugins based on recommendations when you don't even really know enough yet. And all the other available free plugin packs give you a lot of room to explore and try out other things. If you end up buying some plugins at some point, you've saved money already in my mind

Some JS plugins have a lot of character, like the 1175 compressor that Kenny mentionned or Bad Buss Mojo, the Fairly Childish compressor (Fairchild), the Major Tom compressor or Huge Booty. There is about a dozen JS plugins that add character and distortion, some are very good. The only problem I find with them is, the ranges are often way too large, so it's just a matter of editing the script to reduce the range to more reasonable values and boom, done.

Gotta love that price point. Reaper really is an all-in-one solution and the only thing standing in the way of you and amazing results is the amount of time you're willing to put in to learn what I consider to be relatively easy software once you understand the principles of recording and audio production. For what is a staggeringly low price, anyone can be a master with a little inspiration.

I agree these are great, but I just bought DearVR to mix in the box with headphones. This is my go to to monitor Reaper. You only have to see, if you don't put this plugin on your master channel. Because if you render your project, the sound will differ from what you really want. So put it in your monitor tab, in the upper right of Reaper. There is another product that's new from Eventide, but this out of scope of Reaper.

I might go broke buying these. But after talking to a friend I might seriously consider going back to Garage Band because I like how its effects look like a digital representation of rack mounted equipment, where I can just turn a knob or two until it sounds good. It is a little frustrating that Reaper's plugins are all sliders or boxes to manually punch in say your delay time. I'd rather just turn a knob until it sounds good. But I do love Reaper and all of its capabilities. For now I'm re-amping vocals into a standalone Fender Tube Reverb Tank and adding the effect to a new track, then blending the original dry vocal with the re-amped spring reverb vocal. It's fun, but it's time consuming, and if you get it wrong you have to do it again.

Wow Kenny, I'm kinda late to the game and I am so impressed with these plugins. Just so well made. I had a commercial license for REAPER because I used it for work but not musically, and so I didn't really explore all the things you can do with it. Now that I'm not using it for work I've downgraded to a personal license and actually playing around with musical uses. REAPER has always been reliable and solid for all my work-related mixing purposes, so happy to see how good these utilities are. PS -- I used REAPER to mix down and clean up multitrack spoken word recordings, and I found the most useful tool in my arsenal for that was REAfir, which didn't get mentioned here.

Love the minimalism of this plugin lineup! Just a quick q, would you say some 3rd party compressors give you a certain "character" that the Reaper plugins can't? I'm fresh enough in the mixing game to doubt if my ears are fooled by eye candy GUIs.
@pvalenti
@pvalenti 3 жыл бұрын
In short YES. However there are some work arounds that can be used to emulate certain things. Say you want a compressor that gives a certain character. If you Google it you'll find that by experimenting with ReaComp specifically in the use of the RMS and Knee controls and the switch that makes it use feedback vs the normal settings that you can emulate other compressors like an SSL, or 1176, or Fairchild...not exactly but fairly closely. You may find that some effects can get closer to the paid plugin you want to emulate by stacking plugins. For instance if you want to emulate tape delay or older circuits you could use ReaDelay and set the setting to something like 4-16 bits. Bits are effectively the quality of the delay. Obviously an older vintage tape delay will have less quality. But there's other things to consider. Tape delay provides saturation, so enter JS Saturation and set it to taste. But what about tape properties like warble, wow and flutter? Enter JS Phaser or JS Flanger or JS Flange Baby... The point is, your limitations in Reaper are only that of your imagination. But in some instances you might find the need to purchase the odd paid plugin for ease of use or for workflow, or for something specific. But the point here is, that almost anything you can imagine is doable with the right knowledge. My suggestion for the next great Kenny video is focusing on things like this. Show us some advanced use of ReaComp to start off with and show how it can sound like favorite paid plugins. Keep it up Kenny! You are shining the light and we are following! Great stuff!
@hhaxden
@hhaxden 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, if they are emulators of analog compressors (because of saturation, distortion, etc.). If they are just digital compressors, then all they provide is a different interface and it's up to you whether that's worth the money. The only noticeably missing feature is control over the stereo linking, however, you can recreate that by creating 2 copies of your compressor and routing the left/right channels to them separately.

I was a little disappointed by the title, but - as you mentioned before - the Reaper installed plugins are more than sufficient for most recordings. I have a few other that I prefer while mixing, but whenever I start mixing, I still find myself starting off with the Rea plugins (and often end up using them). To my idea they also blend in with the workflow and learning curve of Reaper itself. Which is a bonus imo. Also, you provide us with enough lessons to get the most out of the Rea plugins. Thanks, Kenny and never stop doing this 😅

However, on trying their version of reverb and delay, it did NOT match up at all to Reaper's own plugins. Following your tutorials on 'Recording your band' episodes 10 and 11 I think, on adding Reverb and Delay, I have yet to find anything to surpass those plugins and/or your tutorials. Note that those have been saved as track templates for me, for every scenario :) Thank you for your continued support.

Sometimes using a certain plugin is like using your non dominant hand to write. You can learn to do it. But using another plugin for the job might be more natural for you. I really like the free Kilohearts filter and 3 band eq for instance.

You're right, Kenny. I bought a suite of fancy mastering plugins thinking I could get better results than the ones that came with Reaper. I mastered the same project with Reaper's tools first and then with the third-party ones. I couldn't get better results than what I had already achieved with Reaper's plugins alone. Now the only reason I sometimes open the third-party plugins is to have something pretty to look at :-)

Only two I don't use is the delay and reverb because I have other favs. But getting off topic because I don't know where to post my question to you Kenny but I'll try here and then you can direct me or offer suggestion. Question: When I use the mod wheel for pitch bending on my keyboard which affects the VST plugin and writes it to the DAW, it sometimes sounds like it is sputtering rather then be a smooth pitch bend during playback. It makes a zillion dots in Reaper; bottom portion in the open editor while I select the mod wheel for pitch bending. Example: I play a sound library saxophone and use the joystick/mod-wheel to do pitch bending on certain notes. On play back of the track however, it sounds like it stutters and/or spits. This happens sometimes when using say a violin vst as well. Cuebase does not produce this effect. - Why is this happening? - Why does it not make smooth curve lines rather then a gazillion dots? - Is it because I am using an older Korg keyboard? - Is it to do with the vst and pitch wheel not writing information correctly or poor script code for the pitch wheel? - Is it correctable in Reaper? Any info or suggestion would be greatly appreciated oh great Sensei of Reaper. Master in Reaper Kung fu. I absolutely love your instructional videos.

Could you explain the effects of the "window size" and "overlap" parameters? I have been using ReaTune with my guitar, with the MIDI output going to a synth. It was not very responsive until I turned down the window size. Have you any other advice please.

Now we just need a new Groove 3 Mixing Course just showing us, mixing only with stock plugins by Kenny Gioia or is there already some kind of these stuff? But why inside Groove 3. A mixbreakdown inside KZbin would be nice. Greets

Great 👍 the only thing I see missing from this list of essential plugins is a saturation plugin. What do you use for that?
