I'm at a point my life I can afford to buy quality. You almost always save money long term. I prefer to buy US made and avoid China/Asia items like the plague. Unfortunately a lot of times there's no quality products available. Most people prefer cheap and disposable or we wouldn't be in this mess. PS- Just moved back to the panhandle. Awesome place.

I've just received one from the Dutch army from the year 1982, it was squeaky, sprayed it in with WD40 and a lot of black stuff came out of the screw area. Used WD40 on the henches and it works like new. 20 dollars for a used one, but it hasn't been used since 1990. I'm glad that I've bought the real deal for our hiking trip to Norway, since I was doubting to save money on some gear.

Holy crap, the Ozark Trails E-Tool I bought for $10 out performed that Rothco by a country mile. I’ve had it for a few years now and have since gave it to my son for camping. I replaced it with an Ames 87. The OT got the job done, but I wanted an Ames like I had in the Army. Funny enough I got the Ames for $10 a couple of weeks ago after picking up a Fox Outdoors E-Tool at my local Military surplus store. I’m not sure how it will hold up, but I bought it to throw in the back of my vehicle for emergency use.

Nice review. The Ames GI issue original is the standard. Taiwan has the capability to make very high end hardened steel for tools and I own several. They are not China. It's a shame that they make this sort of stuff as well and of course the importer could spec a higher quality but didn't.

If a shovel can't shovel, then it is garbage. The e-tool isn't just a shovel though. It is a shovel, pick, hoe, axe, saw, scythe and hammer. I can guarantee that the Rothco would fail any of these tasks. I have an Ames 1992 E-tool. 2 covers, M1967 and ALICE. It comes out with me on EVERY camping trip, even when I don't plan on building a fire.

Rothco is good for clothing, pouches, and certain pieces of gear. Namely gear that won't see ANY hard-use at all. Everything else? Just no. Got a couple of shirts from Rothco that I'm very happy with. But as far as E-tools, I prefer the one made by Glock. The Gerber copy of the Ames entrenching tool looks like a winner as well.

the Chinese e tools sold at Walmart under the Ozark Trail name, made by "Zhejiang Great Star industrial" are rather robust and take as good a licking as the US made ones for about $12

Still, even on the original they should put that threaded Tube upside down, so that dirt doesn't build up that easily inside the thread. I did that to my folding shovel and it works great.

If I do ever end up actually purchasing a military-grade E-tool made in the US, I am going to dye it olive drab, sharpen one of the edges, change the upper half of the handle by removing the folding piece and replacing it with a solid one, so it looks like its WW2 ancestor, Granted I still am looking or M51 Vietnam War era one with the pick,

i have seen were items made in asia are lower in cost “most of the time” but are cheaper in how they are built, far lower quality in fit and form, and do not last as long. and this is on items that are there to hold humans while there car is doing 80-90 mph. down to just a lowly switch. i am not in the army will never be ( age 65) but when you need to dig a hole right now to help get out of the way of those high speed stingers. cheap is not worth ones life.

If this doesn't prove to you that you should avoid that green tool (and it should), here's another practical application of both. Happened just today actually when we were filling sandbags to fortify a hill we often defend playing airsoft (yes, I get people make fun of the sport, no I don't care as it's fun). Anyways, the hill has trees over it, roots lacing the 0.5-1ft of soil covering the hill, rocks, granite, slate, and clay. A whole mess. We didn't have the tools to cut through the roots and the rock, only our two etools. One was mine which is the black one, and someone else brought his Taiwan knockoff. We were digging and after a pretty brutal usage from one of the club members, the handle broke at the same spot as it did in the video. Whereas mine was used just as brutally, and only got a little scratched up. We chipped away at slate, jammed it into roots, and used it to try and bang a knife through a particularly thick root. Only damage is superficial. So yeah, it might not be the best tool, but for something portable to dig a small pit for like a fire and then pack away, it's pretty dang good.
