I asked a couple years ago if you could do a detailed video of your coal loader. I know you have at least one but now that it's installed into a finished, working railroad, you probably won't be able to get good video of the internals of how it works right? I just find it really fascinating to watch and finding out how these models really work. Thanks for any consideration :) P.S. Thanks for another great video :)

I am looking to make my own layout with live loads of coal and am wondering if you know about how many hoppers a container of the Woodland Scenics Coarse Coal you use. I have 15 really nice hoppers for a train and am hoping to make a coal loader resembling one like that in Sandusky OH or NS’s coal terminal in Norfolk Virginia.
@tomclark465410 күн бұрын
I think a large container can fill about 6 or so cars. It depends on a few things like how much you put in each car and what kind of car they are.

I'm not sure if you've ever mentioned it... are the helper engines powered? And if so, is there a second operator usually for them? Thanks for the great videos!
@tomclark465410 күн бұрын
All our engines are powered except one small switcher (a calf I believe is what they call it) and normally we have a second "crew" running the helpers to increase the "fun factor". However, I have seen Josh successfully run both headend and helpers by himself. (I have never been that brave ... or skilled!) Tom (Josh's Dad)

@orbitalbits15 күн бұрын
I'm sure you've answered this elsewhere, but what material are you using for your live coal loads?
@tomclark465410 күн бұрын
Woodland scenics cinders.
@ryanmearse881315 күн бұрын
Your layout always looks great, however don’t take this the wrong way but track authorities are usually only used for dark territory since there is not any signals to control train movements. I only know this because I work for a railroad who runs mainly on dark territory and we are dispatched by NS dispatchers. We use NS track authorities in between signal territories that NS controls and have to follow the rules by the track authority. Just a FYI do what you will with it.

Live loads seem very neat. Tried it once and I got gravel everywhere. How do you cope with locomotives not being strong enough to pull these full trains of mineral? My layout has steep grades and plenty of curves. Not ideal for larger trains.

ns derail,, hella accurate... but also need a few hoppers with busted braces and bulged sides. engines on the coal runs tend to have a small pile of coal on the front platform and ditch lights covered in black sticky coal, but still able to shine through. i can also tell ya, as someone who services about 8-15 engines on any given night, "FJB" and "TRUMP 2024" is unfortunately written in the dirt on the reflective strip, and other places, on a majority of the engines. its very nice change to see these clean of politics.
