Join me for a typical ostomy change! This is what happens when my stoma doesn't behave during ostomy bag changes and I need to prep my skin multiple times! This was taken a few weeks ago when my incision was still fairly new.
Hi, I'm Maggie and I have Crohn's disease. I am thrilled to be here sharing my personal experiences with Inflammatory Bowel Disease as well as living with an ostomy. I'm proud to share a little bit from a clinical experience as well, having worked as a GI pediatric nurse and ostomy telehealth nurse. I am so glad you are here. ♥ #ibd #crohnsdisease #ostomy

Hi, my Stoma is called Sidney lol. I buy Inco sheets ( disposable, waterproof sheets) and tuck one in my waistband. I have all my products for a change on a tray. I always have a bag with everything I need for a change in it, if you've a leak it's quicker to do a change. I was taught to use kitchen roll wet to clean my Stoma and skin when you take your bag off. Instead I buy compressed wipes from Temu. They're softer, stronger and are a handy size to put in your Stoma kit. I use skin cleansing foam with dry wipes, then talc, barrier wipes etc. I use a hairdryer on my seals, it really helps adhesion. Stoma Nurses gave me that wee tip. I've had mine 9 months just. Hi from Northern Ireland 🇬🇧

@@audreygraham235 yeah I was taught to use cleanser and wet paper towels to clean my stoma but honestly that takes too long and I can get it just as clean with baby wipes. I'm severely allergic to adhesives so I have to change as often as every other day. I always take a duffel bag with supplies in it if I'm going to be gone any length of time. After having this for so many years, I can pretty much tell when it's getting ready to spring a leak. I try to change it before that happens.

When output is an issue, fold a single sheet of toilet paper in half then wrap your stoma from the base (next to skin) long ways with the rectangle. It should look like a tube. Change if needed. You can even apply the barrier spray with no problems. Remove when it's time to put on the new barrier. Hope someone finds this helpful. Game changer for me.

My dads stoma leaks from the side. He always has to lay down and have my mum change his. It’s so annoying and he has so many leaks through his flange. He has lost all confidence and social activities. I a trying to get him to watch you to give him some hope.
@EllePole
@EllePole 3 ай бұрын
There shouldn’t be constant leaks and he should be able to live his life again. There’s got to be a reason - maybe his outpatient training was not good or the products are poor, or being used incorrectly. Maybe there’s an issue with the stoma that needs to be addressed. I really hope your dad gets the help he needs and is able to live comfortably again ❤
@rosinchenpapa
@rosinchenpapa 2 ай бұрын
As already said by the other person. That constant leeks are a sign that there is something wrong . Maybe you have the wrong product. You should get your dad to a stomatherapeut. They are specifically trained for those problems and will help you find the reasons why the bag leeks. You can even contact special websites of the company that distribute the products as Coloplast or Dansac.
@mellando9770
@mellando9770 2 ай бұрын
@@EllePole yes unfortunately something happened during the surgery but the head surgeon refuses to even look at it. He claims he didn’t do it. It’s a training hospital so we think maybe a training surgeon caused the leak. When he has no bag on, the stoma constantly leaks from the side. Hence why he can’t change it himself. He has to lay completely flat and mum packs it with absorbent wadding and changes it as quick as she can. Due to the constant leak it often leaks through the sticky flange. If dad does outside work or sits for a while it creates a crevice where the urine leaks. Very annoying. Even more annoying when the folks constantly question the surgeon and get rude responses.

I have a nightmare of a stoma, diagonal, flush on the output side and in my chub crease. its been 3 months and I am just starting to get a seal for a day+. There are alot of special flanges(conical) and sizes, and seals, convex barrier rings. They all helped alot. no external leaks, only internal at the 1day+ mark so far. I hope he is working it out. Best wishes.

Usually my stoma is quiet while I am changing my iliostomy bag but sometimes it's very active when I haven't eaten recently and I just keep wiping and and trying to get my area wiped & dried and new barrier ring and bag on before it starts having output again. 😜 It can be frustrating when you have it all dry and some leaks and you have to start over. 😒 Thankfully it doesn't happen too often. It definitely helps to have all your supplies ready to go before starting. I use drainable pouches and try to change them when I first wake up on my changing day. Thank you for your videos. You make it less scary for new "ostomates". 😃

Super helpful to learn! Thanks for being someone to talk about your stoma care, period, and intersection around like uber cleanliness needed post surgery on an adjacent site . I do not have a stoma and this is just a good practical thing to know! Often worried about skin care around stomas because of the repeated/consistent contact with adhesives. Skin barrier, I'm LEARNING😂. How much do you find that genuinely mitigates soreness? (answer only if it's not an annoying question)
@kul793

It gets itchy sometimes. The skin needs to be cleaned thoroughly when changing the flange. Then skin barrier (powder or spray) before applying the new flange. Skin irritation can be a real issue for ostomy wearers.

Without the flange his bag stayed on for 9 days. Now we don't keep it on that long, cuz he needs to shower 🚿 but it will still last a good long time. Ty again for sharing your experience. I have tumors in uterine and ex-uterine. How did you know you have a problem with a flop is tube? I'm scared to go for the biopsy so I can have the hysterectomy and I want it done so bad and I haven't had a period for almost 2 yrs this August, so I know I've been Thu menopause.
