Dunno if effortlessly twirling around a heavy Zweihander is "realistic" but it is cool.
@interestingameplay5 ай бұрын
I initially though so too, but in my research found out they were never THAT heavy, and can be wielded with surprising speed with the right technique. Spins/twirls that seamlessly flow into thrusts is how the swords were used to keep multiple enemies at bay and conserve the blade's momentum. Hope that explains my thought process behind the video, and thanks for watching!
@waffler-yz3gw5 ай бұрын
actually they werent that heavy, i thought people knew this by now but greatswords were less than ten pounds on average
@noxinabox35065 ай бұрын
@@waffler-yz3gw @waffler-yz3gw You must be "longswords". People didn't actually use greatswords back then. Or ever, really. They are entirely nonoptimal. Setting aside the extra resource cost, they would have to be large and unwieldy and, even then, would still need to be precisely swung to get in between armor, as even a mighty swing of a big sword isn't cutting through metal. Not to mention that the extra unwieldiness of the weapon would also increase the strain of wearing armor, meaning you'd likely have to reduce said armor to use it even halfway effectively. They are a cool idea in games and film, but entirely impractical in reality. No one wants to be the most weighted down, slowest, and easily punishable person on the battlefield.
@paullywog24775 ай бұрын
They certainly weren't as common as other weapons historically, but in later medieval to early Renaissance Europe they absolutely were used pretty widely. I think what you're alluding to is that they fill a very niche purpose, zweihanders and montantes and the like were mainly used as battlefield weapons to counter pike formations, where a well trained and heavily armored person could essentially sweep up a bunch of different polearms at once and disrupt their formation. They wouldn't then close the distance and get the kills themselves of course, but just tripping those spear guys up goes a long way to letting your allies close in and actually do some killing, so great swords were usually more a defensive or support weapon than anything. This did, however, make them pretty much the only kind of sword that was super viable as a primary weapon on the battlefield. Knights and similar semi-noble, or at least wealthy soldiers might keep a sword both as a backup and status symbol, but they'll bring a polearm, or maybe a hammer, mace or axe combined with a shield first, but a greatsword actually has a lot of combat utility as a main weapon. Of course, you only need one or two greatsword guys for every couple dozen spearman or archers or whatever, but it's useful in its niche if deployed intelligently. A lot of surviving treatises also describe using it to fight a bunch of opponents all on your own, which is what this video is more replicating, but that was almost certainly more of an emergency technique for not dying of everything goes to shit, and not the main way it was used. Hope this was interesting to someone, text brick out

@@waffler-yz3gw Hm... 1 - Fighting against multiple opponents would probably be a death sentence in any scenario, but in this one, the enemies are armored and using shields... 0% chance of survival... But the AI is limited and just stands still waiting to be attacked. 2 - 0:04 Spinning to attack one opponent is really risky, you create openings for attacks or for the opponent to create distance. There's an argument against multiple opponents, but to attack one target is just silly. 3 - During the whole fight the enemies enter in kissing range without making an attack for no reason, example in 0:10 4 - Everyone has weapons and shields but you can barely see one being raised or some semblance of a defensive posture except for the little jumps. 5 - If our player guy here is a heavily armored knight, the first thing that would happen when someone came close would be a takedown attempt, there was a LOT of grappling in armored combat, but in here there's just kissing and staring 1:06 6 - 1:57 wtf? I don't think someone injured would behave like that haha 7 - He does a lot of open swings because there's no need to be defensive or take distance since the only thing he needs to do is hit again with any part of the weapon that will be effective. But in any combat you 1. Advance. 2. Attack 3. Retreat, be it mma or in swordplay. Here there are just reckless attacks nonstop, no distancing, no weapon pointed forward, no resistance or techniques from the enemies. Just a lot of paid actors and a guy swinging a big sword. Well, I rambled more than I wanted. In sum, he tries to use some real techniques, but the scenario and the way they are used is just too messy and surreal to be realistic.
