That means there are infinite (which is itself denoted by a loop (horizontal 8)) things looking at themselves and proving their beingness. it feels like the rumours of buddha's teleportation powers come out to be true...... At around age of 5 , my dad built sets of wardrobes for his room. All doors of the closets had tall mirrors installed on them. When the two side by side closet doors where opened widely, an infinity mirror world would manifest in between. I used to play in between the mirrored doors for hours everyday, looking for my beginnings and my ends. One day, i was so mesmerised by the infinity of the mirrors, that i got lost in them. To this day, I haven't been found again.

Reminds me of a poem by Rumi: Gazing at the Light The lamps are different, But the Light is the same. So many garish lamps in the dying brain’s lamp-show, Forget about them. Concentrate on the essence, concentrate on the Light. In lucid bliss, calmly smoking off its own holy fire, The Light streams towards you from all things, All people, all possible permutations of good, evil, thought, passion. The lamps are different, but the Light is the same. One matter, one energy, one Light, one Light-mind, Endlessly emanating all things. One turning and burning diamond, One, one, one. Ground yourself, strip yourself down, To blind loving silence. Stay there, until you see You are gazing at the Light With its own ageless eyes. - Jalal-ud-Din Rumi

Leo, thank you SO MUCH. I can't even begin to explain how much of an epiphany this is for me. For years, I've had an increasing feeling of general overwhelmed-ness in response to the awareness that anything seems to exist at all, or that at the least my awareness seems to exist at all. This feeling has always left me incoherent and speechless beyond simple remarks that "everything is so strange". This video was like the final clue to realize how to put the pieces of the puzzle together. As soon as you showed the graphic at 21:10, it clicked for me that the waterfall is life, existence, everything. This (consciousness, universe, being, everything) IS the perpetual motion machine, and know one understands why it works. But it just does. Thank you

"The only way the ego can survive is by lack of self-reflection, because self-reflection leads to the collapse of everything. That is why paradoxes and contradictions are outlawed from logic by fiat. Not because they don't belong there, they are at the very core and center of logic. Without paradox and contradiction, there could be no logic, but they are dismissed and discounted and demonized... because they literally threaten the collapse of all of reality." I felt/realized (theorized?) this deeply intuitively, and you have put it into words beautifully. This quote made me recall a time I was broaching such abstract notions during a therapy session, when I said something that hit a little too close to home. I remember the feeling in the room shifting intensely, my heart sank unlike it ever had before. The look in my therapist's eyes was akin to terror in some ways. It was as if the universe was looking back at me through his eyes and saying "Shhhhh, I don't want to remember the truth." I immediately back-peddled and spent the rest of the session trying to make both of us forget about what had just been said.

Yes, Buddhism and Hinduism have taught this for thousands of years. That everything is "empty" or "formless", and that there is only the appearance of things or what is called "luminosity". The Ancients knew what reality actually is. But overtime, individuals were corrupted by their egoic perception and used this knowledge to change others' perceptions of reality, ultimately changing reality itself. This forced people to go into hiding, use code and spread this information to the few who were initiated into the mystery schools.
@shubhanshu48897 жыл бұрын
Nah dude I have seen that too, they aren't close. Their perspective confused me for few days, they said that everything isn't deterministic. Which is totally wrong. BECAUSE A 50% CHANCES OF SOMETHING TO HAPPEN, IS THE WORST CASE OF HUMAN'S ABILITY TO PREDICT FUTURE ...you understand what I am saying ? I hope you do. If you have been correlating it with quantum physics. You can surely relate to what I'm saying.

@no-wun28897 жыл бұрын
Honestly, the idea is silly. These thoughts are coming from people who base their understanding of science on what their education has taught them. Past already is present is future. The data of a supercomputer is the codification of information that already exists. Anything that can happen has already happened. Time is an illusion in the sense that it is completely relative. Time is not something that forms consciousness. Time is consciousness. You are time, You are space, etc. Our point of perspective is limited to the barriers of time-space linearity. But, if we allow ourselves to experience ego-death, we can see beyond this linearity. Ultimately, everything is nothing. So time itself is empty, formless, manifesting and progressing through form. There is unlimited potential. When we are operating from the perspective of the mind, of habit, of repetitiveness, we are working like clockwork, not fully conscious; we are predictable. But when we are wholly present, we have the ability to see reality as it is, completely united. When we have beliefs, habits, thoughts, we are operating within the time-space matrix. When we let go completely, we return to the beginning, which is also the end, being beyond time. "I am the wisest man alive for I know one thing and that is that I know nothing". When we truly let go, we stop limiting the potential manifestations of the universe. You can only really perceive what you allow yourself to perceive because if there is no "you" to be the perceiver, there is not a perception. Too many people are stuck in their egos, they only see one dimension, they're too scared to consciously know they are a multidimensional being. You wanna see a supercomputer? What do you think you are? Honestly, a lot of people are looking at AI like it is a god, something above them. We need to stop this before it begins. A product of reality can not be better than reality itself. I mean we already have a church of artificial intelligence, we are looking for what is right in front of us. I'm just gonna say it: some of the dumbest humans right now are people who are believed to be the smartest. When in fact, the intellect by itself is complete asinine, it doesn't hold a matchstick to truth. Wisdom is silent. Reality already is as is.

Oh My God Leo. I think I saw it.. Yesterday when I watched this video I had the biggest 'aha a' moment I've ever experienced in my life! In the last exercise I realized how the strange loops existence was solely based on my perception, and at the same time my perception was existing only because I had something to perceive! :D This realization was like the example of "your brain is in the reality and reality is in the brain" you mentioned in the video, but so much more profound. What surprised me even more was that I had already discovered this on my own (kinda)! :D Many months ago I had been contemplating (I didn't call it contemplating at the time but any way) about existence and I had wrote down this same conclusion, which goes: "Reality can only be if some one is perceiving it. And perceptions can only be if there is reality to preserve." But I had missed the bigger conclusion! :D The application of me, my perceptions, my fucking Perceptions!! I didn't see at the time the paradox that this statement holds and now that I experienced the paradox yesterday... oh boy.. :D This experience meant that the strange loop on the screen was as real as me! As real as the background of the strange loop on the screen (and of course as unreal). So I realized I have no way to ground myself! I realized that I can't be physical! I can't exist.. and still I exist, like the strange loop on the video. I can still remember myself going: "Oh my god.. this is what Leo has been talking about.. Reality is just a huge illusionary paradox and that IS reality!!":D I'm just a perception paradoxically existing with my perceptions, because it could not be any other way. And still there was nothing sad about it. This realization was actually calming and innocent in a way. I wasn't even feeling any smarter than anyone else, which I usually feel after watching some kind of video about reality. I just saw the strange loop and its beauty (its funny that its actually sooo beautiful :D). But as you said is another thing to imagine it and another to accomplish it. Thank you Leo. This experience/realization was incredible and I hope I was able to articulate myself even though this is such a tricky thing to explain and English is not my mother-language. Now excuse me and let me go buy some Hofstadters strange loop. PS: I'm sorry about all the ":D" in the text. I just think it's appropriate because I'm smiling like crazy all the time while writing this text :D PPS: waiting on Gödel's incompleteness theorem and how to get a witch girlfriend ;D edit: because I can't grasp or recreate this experience I would love some kind of response. Is this just more conceptualizing? Am I on the right track? It felt very real and realizing it was so profound that I don't know what to believe anymore. I'm obviously not enlighten so is this just another trap? Can I even ask these questions in a hope for guidance?
@ActualizedOrg7 жыл бұрын
Yes, of course. That was what we call a "direct consciousness" or a samadhi experience. So you got a little taste of nonduality. I've come to the same realization when moving toward spirituality and enlightenment. When listening to "experts" speak about enlightenment, they often say many things that seem to suggest the search for enlightenment is a roadblock to enlightenment. When reflecting back to an experience like being at work focusing on entirely practical matters, I realize that in that time I am often fully engaged in what I am doing. This makes me think that in those moments I am closer to enlightenment than when I am thinking about it.

Leo, you’ve changed my life and probably many others as well. Every insight I have, you happen to release a video that confirms and clarifies it for me. And if you release a video talking about something completely foreign to me, I try to understand and contemplate it, which leads to even more insights! I absolutely love where this channel is going and I’m very excited to follow you on this journey :)

Hi Leo. I m discouraged by the phenomenon of pain. We can talk a lot about some philosophical stuff, but when you face pain, it seems very real, you know. So please can you discride may be in future episodes or here, what is nature of pain? Is it just one of infinite aspects of reality or it is something else, something more complex? Thank you Leo.
@ActualizedOrg7 жыл бұрын
"it seems very real" *Seems* is the key word there. At high levels of consciousness, you can literally deconstruct pain into nothingness. I know people who can get root canals done without Novocaine, and enjoy the process because they are conscious enough to see that pain is literally nothing.

I deal with chronic pain, too. What I've found most helpful is not identifying with it. It is still felt, but it is not "mine." This can effectively remove all psychological suffering from the equation. You still feel the physical sensations, but the fear that my life is ruined, that it will always be here, that I failed to obtain the life I dreamed of, that I can't do the things I want to do, that people don't understand my limitations or judge me, etc. - all that is gone. That means a lot less suffering.

Hey there Leo, I just watched this video, and felt this truth deeper than I ever have before. I might even go as far as to say that I've never fully understood it before, only seeing hints of it during meditation and psychedelic trips. In any case, I had a breakthrough experience toward the of the video. I spontaneusly started crying, and after a while the crying turned to a deep laugh. I see it now. Thank you.

Leo, this is so amazing! I still remember when I started watching your videos since November of 2015 for dating advice. This journey has been such a mind fuck and will continue to be one for the rest of my life. I love it! I know plenty of rationalists that suffer from the same problem and don't even believe in strange loops. Anytime I attempt to tell them to open themselves out of the materialist paradigm.... they assume that there is no alternative. It's a real shame because after I watch these videos.... my meditation sessions are so much better when I open myself up. I look forward to more of your content.

Leo, did you try to write Hofstadter a mail? Wouldn't he be open for that after working in the field for so long?
@ActualizedOrg7 жыл бұрын
I have not tried. I've lost hope in converting materialists. They will have to grasp it on their own, if at all. The materialist paradigm is usually extremely good at ignoring/dismissing/demonizing any attempts made at undermining it. Just like any other religion. And this tends to be especially true of academic-types, whose entire careers are built around advancing certain paradigms over others. I would that hope Hofstadter is right-brained enough to re-evaluate his position. But I will not be holding my breath.

@VulkHead6 жыл бұрын
Define "darkest".
@LIQUIDSNAKEz286 жыл бұрын
I mean realizing that there is NO ultimate solution to the problems of life because of the fact that the relationship between positive and negative is precisely symmetrical no matter what. Understanding on a very deep level that we(organisms) are all just different individual expressions of the SAME entity running around in circles thinking that it can actually escape from it's own equilibrium. Having the gut wrenching realization that the experience of you relaxing on a beautiful day while enjoying a nice cup of coffee is a CONTINUOUS process with someone being strapped to a chair while slowly being skinned alive, or how the experience of you playing with your kids in the backyard is a CONTINUOUS process with a poor kidnapped child being fucked in the ass by a sexual predator. Coming to the conclusion that there is NO escape from suffering because "death" is an illusion, EVERYTHING is connected and "all roads lead to the slaughter house." In other words according to this idea, your true identity is the entire universe, everybody and EVERY living thing is just a different version of you in a different situation. You can think of each individual conscious entity as a point on a single Gordian knot of experience where all events depend on each other. And so it's a sad, bleak and lonely situation where the universe(you) is trapped in a never ending cycle of fucking itself, eating itself, having relationships with itself, and eternally going to war with itself.
@ActualizedOrg6 жыл бұрын
Funny, those are my best experiences on LSD and mushrooms ;) The darkest are when you realize the boundary between sanity and insanity doesn't exist!
@ryleygaron67154 жыл бұрын
It's actually not dark or bleak though. That's only one perspective on the situation. Yes, suffering is inescapable, but since that is the case, so is ecstasy, since both suffering an ecstacy are in that same yin-yang relationship with one another. You can think of it as infinite torture, or infinite bliss. It's really both, and neither.

Thanks so much Leo. About quantum mechanics and physicists: You're right. Usually there are two reactions to the paradox of measurement in QM: 1) The "shut up and calculate" approach. Despite the lack of determinism, one can still compute probability amplitudes which give us reliable predictions for particle accelerators (since billions of collisions take place in there). So it's deterministic at that level. 2) Argue that somehow QM is an intermediate formalism, but we haven't gotten the right framework yet. This is the approach of G. 't Hooft, one of the great modern QFT experts who proved the renormalizability of Yang-Mills theory, found the first magnetic monopole solution, etc. He posits that QM is just an extremely efficient piece of mathematics that gets the right answer, but with a funky inconsistent interpretation. I think it's fair to say that no physicist is satisfied with the current paradigm of QM. But they just get on with their lives and "push the symbols" as you say.

Hey Leo. I got one for you. I watched this video last night. I knew what you were talking about. I got it. My mind was having trouble grasping it though. I had forgotten all about it for the time being and left it as something to come back to. I was pondering something in the shower just now (don't remember exactly what) when this random strange loop example popped in my head. Life is nothing more than reality remembering how it came into being. Suddenly when that statement popped into my head, I understood it fully. Now I just need to experience it, like you said. Hope that helps anyone who is having the same problem I was.
