I'm not the only one who has pointed this out, but it worth repeating on this 14th anniversary date: Even if one hasn't read the Ear Candy book and discovered that Scott King was truly a professional bass player with considerable street cred in the music business, one only has to listen to his amazing live bass playing here to realize that Scott's reaction at 8:08 to this performance is the perfect acknowledgement of its magnificence.

So, I said to David Crosby at the Meet and Greet two years ago at the Uptown Theater in Napa, California, "what do you think about that terrific band, Foxes and Fossils, singing Suite Judy Blue Eyes live?" And he pauses, reflects for a moment, and says, "I wish I was good enough to be in that band!" Kudos to Foxes and Fossils for brightening all our lives in these tough times.

The ecstacy of the vocals, those sweet harmonies, the energy, bright sound and skill of the lead guitar, the warm dance of the bass line, the perfect balance of the whole arrangement, and the icing on the cake? This video records the first song the group ever played together. First concert, opening number. They named the band just a couple seconds before the video starts (a longer version of the concert exists, not online). The guy on the left had never played with the guy on the right, and the two girls - age 16 and 15 - had never performed in this setting before, just church choirs.

@Scott BC31H - Check out the band’s recent Q&A video. Tim’s friend Terry Heinlein is a professional videographer and he volunteered to film the show (Terry ‘complains’ off camera in the video about still not being paid!) and Tim already had HD24 recording gear from his own band, The Mustangs. Foxes and Fossils was a side project to allow his daughter and her friend to sing together - they assumed this would be their only performance.

True. The first song of the first set of the first time the group ever got onstage. Tim (in center, speaking) had a semi-pro band for many years, but only a few weeks before this, got together with his youngest daughter Sammie (checkered dress) and Maggie whom they knew from their church, and put together an experiment featuring the girls that they thought would be a one-time-only event. This was the result. They recorded it for posterity, then found out the mics and instruments could be synced to the video for a professional sound. Twelve of the 20 songs they did that night are here on this channel. But this was what they did for the first number.

My GOD this was an absolutely EPIC way for them to introduce themselves to the world. Easily one of the best covers of any song ever recorded, and it's an insanely difficult song to pull off! It takes real balls to even attempt this song at all, and they freaking OPEN their very first gig with it after only a couple of practices? WTF were they thinking!?!?!? And then they absolutely KILLED it like this? I'm hardly a professional musician, but I've played in a few bands and this performance would be impressive if they had been playing together for years. For them to do this right out of the gate is just insane! The people who were lucky enough to witness this were in the presence of true greatness and had no idea. And we know this wasn't a fluke because they have done so many incredible covers since then. This performance is truly jaw dropping.

@Anthony Marks I had seen other requests for them. Maggie couldn't match Judith, but Maggie doesn't need to match anyone .I think she'd do it best, but Chase is very good at mimicking other singers voices. We've just begun to hear the range of her capabilities. Like anything else F&F does it would honor the original and be a little different at the same time. With their female harmonies, I think they could be an excellent fresh take on Seekers songs. I'm sure it's somewhere on Tim's list. "So many songs, so little time" - Tim Purcell

There are no words to describe how amazing this is. These 2 high school girls singing with two older men (One is the father of one of the girls) and they absolutely nail one of the most complex songs ever performed live. Even Stephen Stills got one verse wrong at Woodstock, but they didn't miss a beat here. When I was in college we figured out this tuning on the guitar and how to play this, but we could never have pulled this off anything close to this. I hope they become famous because they deserve it.

@@Far2ManyDrugs I have always loved CSN since my high school days (1970) Heck, if CSN never wrote and sang this song, these people could not have covered it. That being said, I had the album and had about memorized the song by the time I saw the Woodstock movie. Stephen covered his mistake so well (along with David and Graham) and sang the second line of the correct verse. I would have never even realized it was a mistake if I hadn't learned the song so well.

I return to watch and listen to this every month or so. On headphones you properly hear that sublime bass line providing the honeycomb for the structure, while the band leader holds the melody line and performs filler and counter strums on off-beats, and the girls flawless with their tight soaring harmonies adding bright dimension overall. @@lynwessel2471 Thank you for the background to this amazing performance. Frankly I'm blown away that they opened the set with this song, and not some easier ones to warm up with, and I love that they had the foresight to ensure the sound was recorded properly, plus multiple cameras to capture it, instead of the usual shakey camcorder with poor sound. As you say, it was a fun, one-off show, but clearly somebody decided they wanted a decent record for posterity and memories. The talent and experience of each person onstage is readily apparent, especially the bass player (one rehearsal? wow!) who helped keep a challenging song on track. Apart from one vocal timing hiccup by the guitarist (understandable, as he was also replicating all those complicated acoustic riffs by Stephen Stills) who rallied brilliantly a second later, this was truly epic.
