MY MOST EMBARRASSING PRONUNCIATION STORY is a classic one for those learning Portuguese. Very similar to the Italian Man Who Went to Malta, but not as bad. Like most Portuguese learners, I had a hard time with the nasal sound of "Pão," which means bread vs "Pau" which can be a slang way to say "penis." Anyway, as I was in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, the capital of Minas Gerais, I wanted to order the famous Cheese Bread (Pão de Queijo), but they laughed at me when I said "Pau de Queijo" and told me it mean Penis Bread. Embarrassing but funny to look back at.

Hi; my first language is Spanish. And you are absolutely right, very hard to catch the diference in those words. I started learning English in Florida about 10 years ago. And after ten years I have to correct my pronunciation over and over. To be honest, I can't pronounce one those words correctly, instead of sheet I say page . I was 32 when I started learning English in N America and it is a challenge. I remember one day I went to work, and they were painting the building inside. Every wall in white. They had the doors in brown, but now they were going white with every thing, the door, the floor wax was white, the rails white. When I enter in to the building I told a lady, a coworker, " this is crazy, it looks like a white sheet" She look at me laughing and said: " you'r right, it looks like white shit" . I told her, no! I didn't mean that I meant a white piece of paper, and she laugh even more. It was just one of many experiences on my English jorney, but thanks to many friends now I'm doing much better and I know for sure that what I think you say is not always correct. Thanks for such a good video, I've whached it many times, I hope it help me with those sounds.

And also it doesn't help that Enlish schools in USA or in Latam are so propper that they limit their teaching of these stuff. As Mexican, beign an English Teacher is hard because of this 😂 But you're absolutely right

I'm Italian and I found it amusing to imitate an Italian who gets confused between the pronunciation of a long "i" and a short "i". The difference in sound for us is very subtle and difficult to pronounce. Perhaps the simplest, albeit incorrect, way is to pronounce the same "i" sound with a shorter or longer duration. Even English native speakers when they speak in Italian have a characteristic accent which sometimes makes us smile but which is pleasant to our ears.

@helaasgard2734 жыл бұрын
It's always the other way round. Foreigners have probs with the short / i / not the long /i:/ spelt ee or ea. So it's "leave" instead of "live", "eat" instead of "it" and "sheet" instead of "shit" so don't worry about foreigners using swearwords

I've lived in the US for 16 years, and had NO IDEA that these words were pronounced differently! -_- "Sheet" is easy, as it's the same "ee" sound as in Portuguese (I'm from Brazil). But "shit"? No such ih sound in Portuguese, and I couldn~t say it, after watching a handful of videos. Yours was the first that finally made sense - now I've got it!
@RealLifeEnglish17 жыл бұрын
Hey Mileni, I'm glad it was helpful! It's a very common problem. I think the closest sound to the short I (as in "shit") would be the Brazilian "ê". It's not exact, but it's a good approximation. Thanks for watching and commenting!

So I once took an American friend to a concert in Spanish here in CR, I wanted to ask him if he could get any of the words they were singing. Back then with my bad English I wanted to start with something like: Hey when you focus on blah blah blah... But instead I said.. Hey when you f*ck you. He was like wait what? And I repeated again F*ck you! A couple of times. It's nice that he is a very chill person and understood what I was trying to say by my hand gestures, and finally he corrected my bad pronunciation.

Those are quite different to me. If you try to say b** in a mean tone, the correct sound probably comes out. When I say Beach, I feel like smiling. One language expect revealed a glide to a [ j ] in these long sounds. I had great fun watching an Italian chef demonstrating a sheet of pasta on video. (Not on the British show.) He was completely serious. But I can't find that video anymore. I'm surprised advertisements are still on this video after so many utterances of curse words.
